Trans March
Jun 27 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Trans March is not a parade, but an act of resistance. Furthermore, Trans March is an opportunity for us to draw the connections between the struggles of oppressed people beyond the imperial core. Immigrant rights and trans rights are one struggle, one fight!

Join the Immigrant rights contingent at the Trans March on Friday June 27 at 5pm. Meet at the bell on 19th and Dolores! Pride has always meant resistance and fighting back – this year at the Trans March, we say no to the attacks on all of our communities, including our LGBTQ and immigrant communities! No ICE, no deportations, no attacks on LGBTQ services and rights!

The Trump Doctrine and the New M.A.G.A. Imperialism @ Online

The dramatic shift in the Trump led U.S. foreign policies, as seen recently in the bombing in Iran, has created enormous confusion and consternation within establishment centers of power. These changes are manifested in the abandonment of both the liberal international order constructed under U.S. hegemony after the Second World War and the long-term strategy of NATO enlargement and proxy war with Russia in Ukraine. Imposition of high tariffs and shifting military priorities have put the United States in conflict with even its long-term allies, while the New Cold War on China and the Global South is accelerating.

Guest Speaker: John Bellamy Foster is a professor of sociology at the University of Oregon and editor of the Monthly Review. He writes about political economy of capitalism and economic crisis, ecology and ecological crisis, and Marxist theory.  Among his published works: The Vulnerable Planet: A Short Economic History of the Environment; Marx’s Ecology: Materialism and Nature.[8][9] His reinterpretation of Marx on ecology introduced the concept of “metabolic rift” and was widely influential; another is Ecology Against Capitalism, which focused on the critique of capitalist economics from the standpoint of the environment. His 2006 book Naked Imperialism, along with frequent editorials in the pages of Monthly Review, attempted to account for the growing U.S. military role in the world and the shift toward a more visible, aggressive global projection.

Critique of Intelligent Design, Foster’s book co-authored with Brett Clark and Richard York, is a continuation of his research on materialist philosophy and the relationship between ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus and Karl Marx. Drawing on his ecological work, particularly Marx’s Ecology, Foster defends historical materialism as fundamental to a rational, scientific worldview, against proponents of intelligent design and other non-materialist ideologiesAlso in his 2020 book The Return of Nature: Socialism and Ecology (2020), John showed how socialist analysts and materialist scientists in Britain, the United States, from William Morris and Friedrich Engels to Joseph NeedhamRachel Carson, and Stephen Jay Gould, sought to develop a dialectical naturalism, rooted in a critique of capitalism.

If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. Banking Independence Day 2025 invites you into a vital and timely conversation.

Deep budget cuts, financial instability, and political volatility are threatening the health, safety, and economic well-being of our communities. This current moment demonstrates in the starkest of ways the importance of strong and resilient local financial systems.

Journalist and author Oscar Perry Abello (whose new book The Banks We Deserve traces the history and potential of local, inclusive banking) will speak about the book, after which Alameda County Treasurer Hank Levy and Richmond City Councilmember Claudia Jimenez will join local community experts on the intersection between banking and their work to explore how public banks can democratize capital, create affordable housing, support small businesses, and advance clean energy initiatives.

Friends of the Public Bank East Bay (PBEB) is a grassroots-led initiative to create California’s first public bank and is part of a growing national movement for locally owned, mission-driven finance that puts community needs ahead of private profits. It is endorsed by more than 25 local elected officials and more than 70 local nonprofits, unions, grassroots organizations, and political groups including the City of Richmond, East Bay Housing Organizations, Alameda Labor Council, Local Clean Energy Alliance, and Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club.

Strike Debt Bay Area Book Group: “Stellar: A world beyond limits, and how to get there.” @ Online
Jul 5 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Email strike.debt.bay.area@gmail.com a few days beforehand for the online invite.  All are welcome!

For our July, 2025 meeting we will be reading the first two sections (approximately 115 pages) of Stellar, A World Beyond Limits and How to Get There (Amazon), (Goodreads) For our August meeting, we will finish the book.

A bold re-examination of the past, present, and future of humanity, Stellar challenges conventional thinking and offers a vision of hope and optimism – a necessary antidote to the fear and despair that define our times.

Stellar uncovers the root causes of today’s biggest challenges, from war and economic instability to inequality and environmental collapse. It reveals why solutions to these issues are little more than band-aids, why our political and economic structures are failing, and how to unlock humanity’s full potential.

Stellar reimagines what’s possible – a world that gives rather than takes from both people and planet. A Stellar World where today’s pressing issues simply dissolve, where humanity can thrive, free from fear, scarcity, and despair.

This book will transform how you see the world, and your place in it.

Strike Debt Bay Area hosts this non-technical book group discussion monthly on new and radical economic thinking. Previous readings have included (in chronological order) Doughnut EconomicsLimitsBanking on the PeopleCapital and Its Discontents, How to Be an Anti-Capitalist in the 21st Century, The Deficit Myth,  Revenge Capitalism, the Edge of Chaos blog symposium , Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons, The Optimist’s TelescopeMission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism, Exploring Degrowth, The Origin of Wealth, Mine!, The Dawn of Everything  A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things, Beyond Money, Less is More,  Cannibal Capitalism,  Debt, the First 5000 Years , Poverty, By America, End Times, Jackson Rising Redux , The Feminist Subversion of the Economy, How Infrastructure Works, Inside the Systems that Shape our World, Wealth Supremacy, The Persuaders,  The Path to a Livable FutureSolidarity,  Mutual Aid, Breaking Together, Making Sense of Chaos and TechnoFeudalism.

As is more evident than ever, the two major US corporate parties are totally unable to address the numerous crises of the working class — in most cases, crises of their own making.  This is a bedrock belief of the Green Party

Richard Smith has been drafting a platform for a “Party of the 99%”, which is in line with such a viewpoint and has been sharing this document and proposal with a variety of groupings on the left, including at the recent Socialism 2025 conference in Chicago which concluded last weekend.  While most of the platform (here:  https://systemchangenotclimatechange.org/draft-platform -for-a-party-of-the-99/ ) generally aligns with the Green Party’s platform, a few points (such as “nationalizing” fossil fuel companies (#22) and certain aspects about immigration (#17)) will likely generate much discussion.  Please join us this evening to discuss how we might build a “Party of the 99%”.
Richard Smith is a noted author and activist. He has held positions at the East-West Center in Honolulu and at Rutgers University.

He has also been published in a wide range of journals, including New Left Review, New Politics, Foreign Policy and many others.  Richard is noted for his books on eco-socialism and on China’s bureaucratic state.  He has been active in several socialist groupings and is a founding member of System Change, Not Climate Change.

Oakland Tenants Union monthly meeting @ Madison Park Apartments, community room
Jul 14 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

OTU’s Mission

The Oakland Tenants Union is an organization of housing activists dedicated to protecting tenant rights and interests. OTU does this by working directly with tenants in their struggle with landlords, impacting legislation and public policy about housing, community education, and working with other organizations committed to furthering renters’ rights. The Oakland Tenants Union is open to anyone who shares our core values and who believes that tenants themselves have the primary responsibility to work on their own behalf.

Monthly Meetings

The Oakland Tenants Union meets regularly at 7:00 pm on the second Monday evening of each month. Our monthly meetings are held in the Community Room of the Madison Park Apartments, 100 – 9th Street (at Oak Street, across from the Lake Merritt BART Station). To enter, gently knock on the window of the room to the right of the main entrance to the building. At the meetings, first we focus on general issues affecting renters city-wide and then second we offer advice to renters regarding their individual concerns.

If you have an issue, a question, or need advice about a tenant/landlord issue, please call us at (510) 704-5276. Leave a message with your name and phone number and someone will get back to you.

Please join the Utility Justice Reclaim Our Power campaign to tell the Oakland City Council to vote yes on the resolution for utility justice, which will come up at its July 15 meeting.

The resolution calls on the governor and state legislature to support Senate Bill 332, which would commission a study to explore transitioning away from PG&E and other investor-owned utilities, to a not-for-profit utility that would put people and the planet before profits.

This bill is supported by a broad coalition of organizations, including Sunflower Alliance. It would create a path for getting rid of PG&E’s excessive profiteering and dangerous practices — overcharging and endangering us — and replace it with a nonprofit organization
