Please watch the video before the workshop.

The video addresses the question: What is the Green New Deal and why does it matter?  It reviews the basics of the threat of climate catastrophe, the need for a radical restructuring of society for racial, gender, and economic justice, and why these things are inseparably connected. Eco-Socialism Workshops @ Online
Apr 10 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Green Eco-Socialist Network – 3 part series with David Cobb, Meleiza Figueroa, David Bond, Chey Bell!

Join us for a deep dive into Eco-Socialism, and learn how the capitalist status quo deprives us of our human rights and aspirations. The first presentation in this 3-part series is an introduction to Eco-Socialism vs. Capitalism including a discussion of what Eco-Socialism may mean to you.
The world we need and deserve is not only possible, it is an imperative. We and our children will not survive the status quo.

Event is FREE – advance registration required: https://rebrand.ly/GreenEcoSocialism.

Here’s the Facebook event page.

Event opens with Comedian Chey Bell !

The two following presentations in the series will build on the first event and will be held on Feb. 20th and April 10th, 2021. Presentations will focus on Eco-Socialist platforms and programs and institutions being built around the country to shift away from capitalist systems and into a just, sustainable future.

2020 showed us how corporate America tripled their riches while we scrambled to feed our families and keep a roof over our heads. It’s time to break up big corporations! The Green Party platform and our Green New Deal seek to build an alternative economic system based on ecology and decentralization of power. We believe private ownership of production and state ownership of production are not ecologically sound, socially just, or democratic and that both contain built-in structures that advance injustices. We seek democratic decision making in communities and workplaces in balance with nature. This decentralized system is knows as co-ops, communalism, or ecological socialism (eco-socialism).

Please join the Ecosocialist Network for this kick ass kick off with California Greens: Cooperation Humboldt co-founder David Cobb, 2016 press director for Stein/Baraka presidential campaign & UC Berkeley PhD candidate Meleiza Figueroa, and David Bond of Los Angeles who was Kenneth Mejia’s campaign manager.  Cobb is an attorney who was the 2004 Green Party candidate for U.S. President.
This is sure to be a riveting panel, with kick ass comedy, to boot, to kick off the series!

Chevron: Stop Funding Burmese Dictatorship @ San Francisco Chevron Headquarters
Apr 15 all-day

Chevron is not only polluting the environment and politics in Richmond, South America,  and beyond, but is also propping up the murderous military dictatorship in Burma (Myanmar). Join a national day of action telling Chevron to suspend all payments to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise until democracy is restored.

The Myanmar labor movement has led the millions-strong street demonstrations from the beginning, as well as a general strike since March 8. The Myanmar military has responded with brutal, repression. They have used war-grade weaponry on the people’s protests for weeks, killing nearly 600 peaceful protestors. They have arrested thousands, squarely targeting union leaders.
The General Federation of Workers of Myanmar (FGWM) is calling for comprehensive economic sanctions on Myanmar to pressure the military, specifically highlighting Myanmar oil and gas, the largest source of revenue for the Myanmar military. Chevron is the largest US corporate presence in Myanmar, paying over $560 million to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise between 2015 and 2019.
Besides calling on Chevron to suspend payments to the Burmese oil industry, the FGWM is calling on the US government to place sanctions on the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.
The FGWM and the Coalition Against Chevron in Myanmar is calling for a national day of action to demand that no US dollars go to the military dictatorship.

IF YOU’RE WONDERING: BURMA OR MYANMAR?

“The new name (Myanmar) [has]  been accepted by most countries, the United Nations, and other major international organizations. A few governments, activist groups, and news media outlets, however, still cling to the old name [Burma], primarily as a protest against the former military regime’s refusal to put the question of a name change to the people of Myanmar.

“Questioned about the official name of the country soon after her party took office in 2016, Aung San Suu Kyi stated her continuing preference for the colonial-era term Burma, but said that both names were acceptable.”

Demand Care NOT Cops! Kayla Moore’s 50th birthday celebration ~ Rally & March! @ Civic Center Park
Apr 17 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Join us in celebrating the life of Kayla Moore, who died at the hands of the Berkeley Police in 2013. Kayla was a Black trans loved one who was living with a mental health condition. She was killed by the BPD during a mental health wellness check. Kayla would have been 50 years old this year.

We believe that Kayla Moore would still be alive if there had been an appropriate response while she was experiencing mental health crisis. Join us in demanding CARE NOT COPS.

This conversation is timely: last summer, the City Council approved an initiative for a Specialized Care Unit (SCU) that would respond to mental health crises without police involvement. Berkeley Copwatch demands that the City of Berkeley follow through on their commitment.

  • The SCU must be well funded, so that it can actually be effective
  • The SCU must be dispatched without police
  • Since the police will not be responding to these incidents, funding must come directly from the police budget
  • There must be options for long-term care in addition to crisis intervention

Let’s continue the fight for Justice 4 Kayla Moore! We need to make sure that what happened to her never happens again.

Protest in Solidarity With Hunger Strikers for Yemen
Apr 23 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The current War on Yemen is starving millions of Yemenis as the country faces bombings, blockades, and partition. Foreign powers seek to divide the country in order get their slice of the pie. While some members of the U.S. establishment give lip service to ending the war, it is clear that they have no interest in doing so and do not care about the Yemeni people! We say no to this hypocrisy! We say no to the War on Yemen!

We will be gathering to discuss the hunger strike and the situation in Yemen while also fasting in solidarity with Yemeni-American protestors Iman Saleh and her younger sister, Muna, who are weeks into their hunger strike in Washington, DC. We are also fasting in solidarity with hunger strikers in New York, Boston, and others across the country.

We say NO!

DSA Night School: Socialists and the Non Profit Industrial Complex @ Online
Apr 27 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Many people work at nonprofits for the same reason they become socialists – they see the ills of the world and want to have a hand in changing them. Join us for this EBDSA Night School exploring the relationship between the fight for socialism and nonprofits. We’ll look at the limits of philanthropy and enacting change through nonprofits, and explore what it means to build working-class power to fight capitalism.

Hey MTC! Stop starving our transit! Unlock our transit money NOW! @ Transbay Terminal Entrance by the Gondola
May 6 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Bay Area transit services are passing up thousands of riders each day and yet the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is holding back $1.67 billion in federal stimulus funds which could be used right now to restore service. They intend to hold back the American Rescue Plan (ARP) instead of using this money for its intended purpose: to restore transit service and the economy and hire more union drivers.

Not only is this a misuse of the stimulus funds, but MTC’s actions will also lead to a self-created crisis in transit as service will not be there as people return to their lives this year, leading to a permanent loss in ridership.

THIS IS A SCANDAL: the agency tasked with saving transit by distributing these funds is instead killing it. Join us as we demand that MTC release the stimulus funds this year in order to restore transit service NOW!

We will meet at the Transbay Terminal (Mission and Fremont street entrance by the Gondola). Then, we’ll march to the MTC Headquarters at 375 Beale Street.

The Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP) first responders training draws upon over ten years of experience of investigating incidents of police terror and providing support to impacted families. The training will cover the history, structure, and organizing model of APTP, the principles of our work, conducting independent peoples’ investigations, introduction to the APTP model of supporting those impacted by police terror, and an overview of our jail support program.

Independent Investigations: This part focuses on conducting independent people’s investigations including considerations on how to build your team, security and Know Your Rights considerations, required skills and infrastructure, preparation, identifying witnesses, trauma-informed interviewing, cultural humility, collecting evidence, and documenting investigations. We will use case studies from our investigations in Oakland, and provide time for knowledge and skill sharing, and discussion.

CopWatching: In the great tradition of our Oakland’s Pathers, Brown Berets, and other radical grassroots community groups, we need to Police the Police! Learn how to observe and document police harassment in our communities, advocate for someone under arrest, and deescalate police intervention.

Family Support: This part will cover the principles of our work with families impacted by state terror, the introduction to our trauma-informed family support model, an overview of typical challenges and current needs faced by the families. Family support is on-going relationship building, long term advocacy and partnership with families impacted by police terror as they seek justice, navigate the legal system, cope with trauma, and create community with other impacted families.

Jail Support: Jail Support Training will cover the structure and procedures of our program providing community care and support for people released from Alameda County Jail (Santa Rita).

We will share materials including our confidentiality agreement, investigation form, flyer, and a training manual.

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.
