Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Mar 26 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

NOTE: During the Plague Year of 2020 GA will be held every week or two on Zoom. To find out the exact time a date get on the Occupy Oakland email list my sending an email to:

occupyoakland-subscribe@lists.riseup.net

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 4 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we tend to meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months from November to early March after Daylights Savings Time.)

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 3 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Oakland Greens Movie & Discussion: “Hysteria” @ Online
Mar 26 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

For March we have a movie based on historical fact, and ties to patriarchy that in the end create a very useful human sexuality tool — Believed to be a real medical condition, two doctors (Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce) in Victorian England use manual stimulation of female genitalia to cure their patients’ ills, leading to the invention of the vibrator — These free community-building events are designed to see the connection between media and the real world — Does life imitate art or does art imitate life?:

Free Screening: How to Blow Up A Pipeline @ SF AMC Metreon
Mar 27 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Our friends at Oil and Gas Action Network are excited to co-host a free screening of the forthcoming film How to Blow Up a Pipeline   just for local climate activists!   After the film there will be a short facilitated discussion and sharing of resources for people to get more involved in the local climate justice movement.

Tickets are free –  RSVP here.

OGAN writes:

“This film adaptation of Andreas Malm’s incendiary nonfiction book is a stunning wake-up call on the imminent dangers of the climate crisis.  Following a group of young environmental activists on a daring mission to sabotage an oil pipeline, this taut and timely thriller is part high-stakes heist, part radical exploration of the existential threat we all face.  The film opens in theaters April 7—so this is a chance for Bay Area activists to get a sneak peak at this groundbreaking film

The science on climate change has been clear for a very long time now.  Yet, despite decades of appeals, mass street protests, petition campaigns, and peaceful demonstrations, we are still facing a booming fossil fuel industry, rising seas, rising emission levels, and a rising temperature.  With the stakes so high it’s vital that the climate movement look at the history of the Suffragettes, the American Civil Rights Movement, the Anti-Apartheid movement, or Indian independence—to deflate the fallacy that historic, transformative change was accomplished by non-violent, state-sanctioned means alone.

OGAN is in no way advocating for violence or blowing up pipelines – and topics like this are serious issues not to be joked about. But we do hope this film will contribute to a vital strategic discussion for the climate justice movement, and encourage our efforts to be bolder and more effective.”

Silicon Valley Bank – previously the 16th largest bank in the US and reportedly a source of funding for half of all the tech startups in the US – has collapsed.

It’s now become clear the more general banking crisis that has emerged is not due simply to a rogue, mismanaged bank that over-extended itself during the recent tech boom and then somehow mysteriously imploded in just 72 hours, March 7-9, until seized by the FDIC on the morning of March 10, 2023.

Deeper, more systemic forces are at play- in the case of both the SVB collapse and the now spreading contagion to US regional banks as well as to European banks. The SVB is just the tip of the current financial instability iceberg. In Europe the focus is the now collapsed big Credit Suisse bank announced today, March 19, by Switzerland’s central bank. The problem is thus now not just US regional bank centric, but is rapidly becoming global systemic.

What then are the systemic forces responsible for the SVB collapse and now spreading instability to US regional banks and European banks?

The Oscar Grant Committee Against Police Brutality & State Repression (OGC) is a grassroots democratic organization that was formed as a conscious united front for justice against police brutality. The OGC is involved in the struggle for police accountability and is committed to stopping police brutality.

In alliance with the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) we organized the October 23, 2010 labor and community rally for Justice for Oscar Grant. On that day the ILWU shut down the Bay Area ports in solidarity. Our mission is to educate, organize and mobilize people against police and state repression. Sisters and brothers! The Oscar Grant Committee invites you to join us in this vital struggle.

We meet on the 1st Monday of each month

There is No Justice in the Capitalist Courts! Rally to Free Mumia @ Oakland Federal Bldg
Apr 5 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

On March 31, 2023, Judge Lucretia Clemons of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas denied political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal’s legal appeal. Judge Clemons’ decision ludicrously claims that newly discovered evidence proving that key witnesses at Mumia’s trial were paid by (or received favours from) the District Attorney in exchange for their false testimony was “not material” to showing that the trial was unfair!

Mumia Abu-Jamal is innocent and should never have spent a day in jail. This decision shows that Mumia will never receive justice in the capitalist courts. Only mass demonstrations can win his release. Join us at a rally calling to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!
