DSA Night School: Socialists and the Non Profit Industrial Complex @ Online
Apr 27 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Many people work at nonprofits for the same reason they become socialists – they see the ills of the world and want to have a hand in changing them. Join us for this EBDSA Night School exploring the relationship between the fight for socialism and nonprofits. We’ll look at the limits of philanthropy and enacting change through nonprofits, and explore what it means to build working-class power to fight capitalism.

#DefundLine3 Day of Action
May 7 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

For years, Indigenous communities and allies have been opposing the construction of the Line 3 pipeline, which would transport nearly one million barrels of dirty tar sands oil – every single day. Enbridge Energy, the company building the pipeline, has a terrible environmental track record, and this pipeline would violate several treaties with indigenous communities.

Indigenous-led water protectors and allies in Minnesota are taking action every day to stop the construction of Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline – confronting bulldozers, decision-makers, and the politicians that are putting profit before people. Pipelines take billions of dollars to build – and banks like JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Bank of America, TD Ameritrade, Union Bank – as well as insurers like Liberty Mutual – are bankrolling Line 3.

As part of a Global Day of Action May 7th – we’ll be mobilizing in San Francisco’s Financial District to send a clear message to the banks and investors that they must #DefundLine3.

Join us at 10am at the corner of Sansome and Market (E-trade Plaza) as we work to Stop the Money Pipeline. We’ll have plenty of art and signs for people to carry, but feel free to bring any signage that reflects the message of the day– Defund Line 3!

Community safety is always a priority, and we ask everyone in attendance to adhere to the public health guidelines that have been circulated. Please:

Wear a mask at all times
Practice social distancing
Use & bring hand sanitizer
Stay home if you feel sick, or if you have been exposed to anyone with COVID or that is quarantining

You can also RSVP here if you’d rather not let FB know even more about your life than they already do: https://actionnetwork.org/events/san-francisco-defundline3-day-of-action

The training will cover the history, structure, and organizing model of APTP, the principles of our work, conducting independent peoples’ investigations, introduction to the APTP model of supporting those impacted by police terror, and an overview of our jail support program.

Independent Investigations: This part focuses on conducting independent people’s investigations including considerations on how to build your team, security and Know Your Rights considerations, required skills and infrastructure, preparation, identifying witnesses, trauma-informed interviewing, cultural humility, collecting evidence, and documenting investigations. We will use case studies from our investigations in Oakland, and provide time for knowledge and skill sharing, and discussion.

CopWatching: In the great tradition of our Oakland’s Pathers, Brown Berets, and other radical grassroots community groups, we need to Police the Police! Learn how to observe and document police harassment in our communities, advocate for someone under arrest, and deescalate police intervention.

Family Support: This part will cover the principles of our work with families impacted by state terror, the introduction to our trauma-informed family support model, an overview of typical challenges and current needs faced by the families. Family support is on-going relationship building, long term advocacy and partnership with families impacted by police terror as they seek justice, navigate the legal system, cope with trauma, and create community with other impacted families.

Youth Action at Air District Headquarters, June 1; Hearing June 2 @ BAAQMD Headquarters
Jun 1 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Attend an action at the Air District (BAAQMD) Headquarters, stand with community youth and organizations, and tell the Board members we need them to vote the right way —on June 2nd, the next day—to protect community health from the ravages of particulate matter pollution.  We cannot afford to lose this intergenerational fight for environmental justice.  Our lungs just cannot afford it.

You can RSVP for the June 1st action on Facebook (or here if you don’t have Facebook).

And don’t forget to sign the petition!

The Air District must protect community health and truly bring “a healthy breathing environment for every Bay Area resident,” in the words of its mission statement.

The next day on June 2nd, the Bay Area Air District will be voting on whether to take strong regulatory action against Chevron and PBF refineries and force the facilities to make dramatic pollution cuts.  After seeing the stark health impact data and hearing from community members like you, the Advisory Council of the Air District recommended that BAAQMD take “maximum feasible action within its authority to reduce emissions from [particulate matter] sources, prioritizing the most impacted areas.”  However, Big Oil and its allies are lobbying aggressively against the cat cracker Rule 6-5, distorting facts and making false claims.

Good Trouble: Candlelight Vigil for Democracy @ Entrance is on Martin Luther King
Jul 17 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm

America is at a crossroads.

Six months have passed since the failed attack on our nation and our democracy on January 6th. Since that day, anti-voter laws have been passed in states all over the country and the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent rulings have made clear that it will not act to protect the sacred right to vote. This summer, Congressional districts risk being redrawn in a way that will allow politicians to choose their voters – rather than the voters fairly choosing who represents them.

We have reached an inflection point in which we must force our elected officials to act now or risk losing the very foundation of our republic.

But there is hope for us to stop this undercurrent of corruption and rebuild American democracy so that the freedom to vote is protected, billionaires don’t control our political systems, and our representatives actually respond to we the people.

To do this, we must pass the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and D.C. Statehood – and we can’t let anything, including the Jim Crow filibuster, stand in our way!

Join us for The Good Trouble Vigils for Democracy on July 17 – the one year mark of the passing of Rep.John Lewis – as we carry on his legacy by hosting candlelight vigils nationwide to demand that Congress act to protect our freedom to vote and rebuild our democracy.

We must and will win this Fight!

Strike Debt Bay Area Book Group: Degrowth
Jul 24 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Assuming it is open, we will be meeting in-person at our old haunt, the OMNI, and, as an experiment, with a Zoom live link for those who can’t be there physically.  Check back here a few days before the event to insure the availability of the OMNI, otherwise we will meet again solely online.

Due to the exponential growth of Delta COVID in Alameda County we will still be meeting online in July.  The August meeting may be held dually online and at the OMNI Commons.
Stay tuned!

Email strike.debt.bay.area@gmail.com for up-to-date status and the online invite.

Our current topic is degrowth. Our book is Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide, by Liegey and Nelson, available from its publisher Pluto Press and elsewhere, including Amazon.  We will be reading the first half of the book this month, constituting the first three chapters, through page 85 of the paper back edition, and the second half of the book for our August meeting.

“A sense of urgency pervades global environmentalism, and the degrowth movement is bursting into the mainstream. As climate catastrophe looms closer, people are eager to learn what degrowth is about, and whether we can save the planet by changing how we live. This book is an introduction to the movement. As politicians and corporations obsess over growth objectives, the degrowth movement demands that we must slow down the economy by transforming our economies, our politics and our cultures to live within the Earth’s limits. This book navigates the practice and strategies of the movement, looking at its strengths and weaknesses. Covering horizontal democracy, local economies and the reduction of work, it shows us why degrowth is a compelling and realistic project.”

Strike Debt Bay Area hosts this non-technical book group discussion monthly on new and radical economic thinking. Previous readings have included Doughnut EconomicsLimitsBanking on the PeopleCapital and Its Discontents, How to Be an Anti-Capitalist in the 21st Century, The Deficit Myth,  Revenge Capitalism, the Edge of Chaos blog symposium , Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons, The Optimist’s Telescope, and Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism.

Get Killer Cops Off the Street! @ Online
Aug 20 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Make calls together on Zoom to get killer cops off our streets!

Community,
Today at noon we’re making calls together on Zoom to get killer cops off our streets! Grab your lunch and join our SB2 Lunch POWER Hour.

While police officers continue to harm our community members without any accountability, California is only 1 out of 4 states that has no law to decertify cops that put our communities in danger.

Join us, Michelle and Ashley Monterrosa (sisters of Sean Monterrosa, who was killed by Vallejo PD in the wake of the George Floyd uprisings), and the Let Us Live coalition to demand change from Bay Area legislators!
WHAT: SB2 Lunch Power Hour
WHEN: Friday, August 20, 2021 from 12 to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Zoom : bit.ly/sb2powerhour0820

Police officers engaging in anti-Black racism and abuse of their power creates unsafe communities. California has an obligation to ensure their badges are PERMANENTLY taken away when they commit serious misconduct, removing them from our streets and ensuring they can do no more harm.

Share this to get the word out. We want to get these dangerous cops off of our streets ASAP!

In solidarity,
Anti Police-Terror Project
Anti Police-Terror Project is a Black-led, multi-racial, intergenerational coalition that seeks to build a replicable and sustainable model to eradicate police terror in communities of color. We support families surviving police terror in their fight for justice, documenting police abuses and connecting impacted families and community members with resources, legal referrals, and opportunities for healing.
