26th Haiti Solidarity March & Rally @ Mission & 7th St.
Feb 26 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join Haiti Action Committee for a February 26th march and protest
commemorating the 18th year of continued US neo-colonial intervention
and occupation of Haiti since the Feb. 29th 2004 coup that overthrew
Haiti’s democratic government. Since then, the US government has backed
a series of corrupt and brutal regimes which have brought Haiti nothing
but misery, violence and chaos.

Across Haiti, popular organizations are calling for the end of the
US-backed regime and the installation of a transitional government. Yet
the Biden Administration continues to insist on its choice of prime
minister, Ariel Henry, who has no mandate and no legitimacy.

As it attempts to thwart moves towards ending dictatorship in Haiti, the
Biden Administration has deported more than 20,000 Haitian refugees, in
one of the speediest mass deportations in US history. Having fled from
conditions produced by US policy in Haiti, they are now being sent back
into the US-created nightmare they fled.

This is a time for all of us to stand in solidarity with Haiti. [1]

Please call, tweet and/or email President Biden to demand:

Stop the expulsions and deportations of Haitian refugees! End all
support for the Ariel Henry dictatorship!

Call the White House TUESDAY to THURSDAY, 11am-3pm ET

The US Covid Catastrophe: Pathology of a Failed Decaying System  @ Online
Feb 27 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82812417704?pwd=NTJLczViRGg4K0c2Um9MMXFjSVNrdz09

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Almost two years have passed, and we in the US are now approaching 80,000,000 cases and close to 1,000,000 Covid deaths – the largest number of any country in the world – with no clear end in sight.

The pandemic has swept through US society, leaving a path of disease, suffering, death, political and social upheaval, and economic destruction in its wake. The response by the US  government and capitalist politicians has been a complete disaster.

This Sunday at the Marxist Library, we will review the destructive impact of the pandemic, the catastrophic capitalist response, political and economic repercussions, and a prognosis for our future.

Our speaker will be Allan Miller of the ICSS Program Committee.

LOGIN INFORMATION

Our Zoom room will be opened up, as usual, at 10:15 for anyone to join and discuss technical matters, catch up with each other, say Hi, etc.. The program (and recording) will begin as close to 10:30 am as possible and will end at 12:30, but the Waiting Room will remain open until about 1 pm for informal discussion.

Public Land for Public Good E12th St. Celebration @ Lake Merritt Amphitheater
Mar 5 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Dear supporters of the Save E12th Coalition!!!

💥Last night the City Council cast a decisive 5 to 3 vote denying the 6th extension to the luxury tower development on the East 12th St Remainder Parcel, and committing once and for all to affordable housing on this public land!!

💥 Seven+ years of organizing has paid off!!

💥 Last night the City Council cast a decisive 5 to 3 vote denying the 6th extension to the luxury tower development on the East 12th St Remainder Parcel, and committing once and for all to affordable housing on this public land!!

💥 We started this PUBLIC LAND FOR PUBLIC GOOD fight in 2014 and along the way lifted the voices of our communities, we organized for Oakland to stem displacement and gentrification, and worked to prioritize dignified and affordable housing for those who need it most.

💥 Along the way our efforts inspired the public lands policy for Oakland, contributed to improving conditions for our houseless neighbors, said no to luxury towers on public land, and said yes to maximizing affordable housing on E12th St!

💥 It took a lot of us to get here. Neighbors, organizers, union reps, legal teams, journalists, architects, landscape architects, planners, radical developers, students, movement chefs, artists, & entertainers, and city council members all worked tirelessly.

💥 All throughout we always insisted on maximizing affordable housing on E12th St and WE WON!! Thank you for all of your support over the years!

NOW we want to celebrate!!
Where: Lake Merritt Amphitheater (across Kaiser center & E12th land)

Marin Climate Action Summit @ Online
Mar 6 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Join the Marin Climate Action Summit to explore and consider specific legislative and policy approaches to reverse our contributions to the climate emergency while strengthening the local economy and catalyzing a just, verdant, and inclusive county.

Keynote speaker Edward Quevedo, founder and head of practice at The Foresight Lab, will share approaches that The Lab has spearheaded in other locales to achieve these outcomes. After Mr. Quevedo’s remarks, the Summit will consider two questions: What are the barriers that keep climate organizations from succeeding? How do we get traction and achieve policy change? Although the Summit is sponsored by Kevin Morrison’s campaign for Marin County supervisor, participation in the summit does not express or imply endorsement of his candidacy.

Other speakers include:

Marisol Cantú, coordinator of the Richmond Progressive Alliance  Listening Project, a youth-led project that brings together all Richmond residents—from youth to elders—to talk about how the climate crisis has impacted their lives, families, and communities as they envision a fossil-free Richmond.

Janet Johnson of Sunflower Alliance and the Richmond Shoreline Alliance

Naila and the Uprising – Film Screening and Discussion @ Online
Mar 6 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

RSVP here for the Link!

Fierce Palestinian struggle against settler-colonialism is ongoing, and this seemingly far-away struggle makes its way into the very fabric of the repressive apparatus back at home. The first Intifada was a key part of Palestinian resistance during an important historical moment in the struggle for Palestinian liberation.

Please join East Bay DSA and San Francisco DSA to take part in our virtual film screening and discussion of 𝙉𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜, an inspiring and educational documentary about the key role of women in the first Intifada. The movie is just under 90 minutes and we will have a discussion afterward.

This is part of a project by the DSA BDS & Palestine Solidarity Working Group to bring this film to any DSA chapter, YDSA, or internal body through the end of 2022 in honor of the first Intifada. December 8th, 2021 marked the 34th anniversary. Please email dsanailafilm@gmail.com to find out how to coordinate a screening or with any questions.

Ecological Imperatives & the Decentralized Web @ Online
Mar 9 @ 11:15 am – 12:15 pm

Can we build a better web AND protect our planet at the same time? For those of us working on decentralized tech, how can we achieve both critical goals?

At the March DWeb Meetup, we join hands with Mozfest 2022 to tackle this big question with Kelsey Breseman, Civic Science Fellow at the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, where she works on environmental accountability, data ownership models, and intentional community.

Kelsey has written this thought-provoking essay (https://blog.archive.org/2021/09/20/ecological-awareness-for-the-decentralized-web/) on ecological awareness, one of the core principles of the DWeb. (See https://getdweb.net/principles.) Together, we’ll examine the assumptions and truths about energy use and blockchains, NFTs, and how the decentralized web can solve some problems, while perhaps deepening others.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Kelsey Breseman is a Rita Allen Civic Science Fellow at the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, where she works on environmental accountability, data ownership models, and intentional community. Kelsey has founded and managed tech startups, and has a history of activist leadership for progressive causes. She has a B.S. in Neural Engineering from Olin College and is currently working on a M.S. in Data Science from UT Austin.

BAAQMD Meeting on Valero Emissions
Mar 12 @ 7:05 pm – 8:05 pm

Exactly what harmful organic compounds have our friends in Benicia been breathing during all the years the Valero refinery failed to report its emissions?  BAAQMD has scheduled two important informational meetings to discuss the ongoing Serious Emission Violations incurred by the refinery.  Jack Broadbent, the Air District’s Executive Officer/Air Pollution Control Officer, has said:

“Valero’s disregard for air quality regulations and public safety in the surrounding community warrants decisive action and significant penalties to deter violations in the future.  Valero did not report or control the emissions from this source as required by Air District regulations, state and federal law, so we are requesting approval of an abatement order to provide transparency as we seek to hold Valero accountable for its actions.”

Broadbent describes this as a “major shift” in the handling of enforcement cases.

The next public meeting, a legal hearing, will be held on March 15 from 9:30 AM – 5 PM.  The newly revived Air District’s Hearing Board will consider approving the proposed abatement order (information below).   We can view the agenda and provide written comment to the Hearing Board here.   We can also provide verbal comment to the Hearing Board during the Hearing in the following ways:
