Particulate Matter: Air Quality Management District Board Meeting @ Bay Area Air Quality Management District Offices
Jul 31 @ 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

There is no longer any doubt that soot, or “particulate matter” emissions are the primary causes of death and illness due to air pollution.  Yet, despite multiple requests BAAQMD has yet to provide any firm timeline for progress on four key actions to reduce particulate matter emissions (PM 2.5) from Bay Area refineries.  The majority of refinery particulate emissions are due to the facilities used to “crack” or break down heavy crude oils into  lighter, useable fuels.  Rules 6-5, for the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, and Rule 9-1 for Fuel Gas Hydrotreating facility have both been promised action to implement known and proven technologies that can drastically reduce emissions.  Yet, we have no timelines to complete these rules.  The same is true for rules to end refinery PM pollution trading or implement a combustion strategy to reduce emissions.

Multiple letters have been sent to the BAAQMD executive leadership and the Board requesting specific timelines, with very vague and unspecific responses by Jack Broadbent.  These letters and Broadbent’s response can be seen here.

This meeting will be our only opportunity all summer to demand that the Board of Directors insist that staff supply a specific action timeline to implement these necessary rules.  We have requested the Board to place this item on the agenda for July 31.  This is a necessary step for Board members to act on our demands and not just listen to “non-agenda item” public comments.

Come to the Board meeting on July 31 and insist that timely and direct actions be taken to immediately reduce particulate emissions from Bay Area refineries to protect the health of all communities.

Public Utilities Commission: Hold PG&E Accountable!

PG&E’s negligence has caused fires that killed dozens of Californians. Now they want to make us pay for their negligence. PG&E is asking the California Public Utilities Commission  (CPUC) for permission to raise our rates to pay their expenses for liability payments and for the safety measures they were supposed to be doing all along.

According to the district court judge overseeing PG&E’s probation for its felony criminal convictions, PG&E “pumped out $4.5 billion in profits and let the tree [trimming] budget wither.” They have not yet paid anything to victims of the Camp Fire — but they found $204,800 to contribute to Gov. Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign

Tell the CPUC to stop the rate hikes and hold PG&E accountable! Join The Utility Reform Network, the No PG&E Bailout Coalition, and others at CPUC hearings on the proposed rate hikes. The CPUC will hold these hearings throughout the PG&E service area in July in August. In the Bay Area:

San Francisco, July 9, 1 PM
CPUC Auditorium, 505 Van Ness Ave.
* Webcast: www.adminmonitor.com/ca/cpuc
* Listen-only phone line: 1-877-937-0554, passcode: 7031793

Oakland, July 24, 1 PM and 6 PM
Elihu M. Harris State Office Building Auditorium, 1515 Clay St.,

Santa Rosa, July 31, 1 PM and 6 PM
Santa Rosa City Hall Council Chamber, 100 Santa Rosa Ave.
* Webcast: www.youtube.com/user/CityofSantaRosa or www.facebook.com/CityofSantaRosa
* Listen-only phone line: 1-877-937-0554, passcode: 7031793
* Santa Rosa residents will also be able to view the broadcast through the television on the Government Channels (Comcast 28 or AT&T 72)

The Domestic Worker Movement: It’s History & Current Strategy @ Exact location TBD, see Facebook page for update
Aug 3 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Facebook event for location:

One event that combines the history of the Domestic Workers Movement with the current state of its organizing at the national level with Mariana Viturro, the Deputy Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, with Kim Alvarenga of the Ca Domestic Workers Alliance, and Kathy Coll, professor of history at USF.

Background:
The Domestic Workers Movement has become one of the most powerful movements led by working class women of color, including Black women and immigrant women. This didn’t happen by accident. It has been built by diligent organizing over the past twenty five years and draws from its roots of resistance dating back to the enslavement of Native Americans and Africans by European colonists on this continent.

Come learn about that rich history with University of San Francisco Professor (and long-time Hand in Hand leader) Kathy Coll.

Then join a conversation with Mariana Viturro, the Deputy Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and with Kim Alvarenga, the Director of the CA Domestic Workers Coalition, to learn about the current status of organizing in the Domestic Worker Movement and the many strategies being used to build power of domestic workers, transform the industry and prepare to win in critical elections in 2020.

Join us! Deepen your knowledge of this important social movement and learn about the specific opportunities for allies and employers to be a part of it.

Potluck before Occupy Oakland General Assembly
Aug 4 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Note: Normally our weekly feed is on the last Sunday, but there is a big event at the plaza July 28th, so we have rescheduled for August 4th if we can find servers.

Feed The People!

The last Sunday of every month attendees of the OO GA get together a little earlier than usual, at 3 PM (2 PM during cooler months) to share some food with each other and the community.  There should be a table, utensils/plates, meat and veggie entrees and whatnot, courtesy of the Kitchen Committee (such at he is), so just bring yourself, or something to share as well if you’d like.

After the meal the Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets Sundays at 4 PM at the Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. During Daylights Losing Time in the Winter we meet at 3 PM at the plaza, & again, we retreat to the Omni if the rain is a pain.

The OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for more than six years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

General Assembly Standard Agenda

  1. Welcome & Introductions
  2. Reports from Committees, Caucuses, & Independent Organizations
  3. Announcements
  4. (Optional) Discussion Topic

Community Discussion on Attacks on Immigrants
Aug 6 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

I.C.E. here, coups there – U.S. out of everywhere!
Striking at the root of the attack on our communities

From the horrific border concentration camps, to family separations, to the string of deaths of detained children, to the arrest of solidarity activists leaving water for those crossing the border – the brutality and human rights violations by the U.S. government against immigrants are on the rise.

To fight back and win, we must have a deep understanding of the root cause of our oppression. Join us to look at the exploitative policies — followed by successive U.S. governments — that have ravaged nations over the last few decades, creating violence and poverty leaving our people no choice but to migrate to the United States. We’ll connect our struggles as oppressed peoples fighting for self-determination and invite folks to get involved in the organizing efforts for an upcoming mass action to demand no wall, no ban, no I.C.E., no concentration camps, and full rights and amnesty NOW!

Known to others only by her alias “The Woman of the Mountain,” Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminum industry. As Halla’s actions grow bolder, from petty vandalism to outright industrial sabotage, she succeeds in pausing the negotiations between the Icelandic government and the corporation building a new aluminum smelter. But right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything. Her application to adopt a child has finally been accepted and there is a little girl waiting for her in Ukraine. Economics Book Group: “Banking on the People.” Hosted by Strike Debt Bay Area. @ Omni Commons
Aug 10 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Beginning on August 10th, the Strike Debt Bay Area Economics Book Group began discussing Banking on the People: Democratizing Money in the Digital AgeWe tackled the introduction and first chapter, available through the ‘Look Inside’ feature on Amazon, for the August 10th meeting.

For our September 7th meeting, we will be discussing the rest of the first section, Chapters 2-6.

For our October 12th meeting, we will be discussing Chapters 7-9, the first part of the second section.

For our November 16th meeting, we will be discussing Chapters 10 – 13.

For our December 14th meeting, we will be discussing Chapters 14 and through to the end.

All are welcome!

The Economics Book Group began with Doughnut Economics and continued with Take Back the Economy.  We read a few chapters every month.

“Today most of our money is created, not by governments, but by banks when they make loans. This book takes the reader step by step through the sausage factory of modern money creation, explores improvements made possible by advances in digital technology, and proposes upgrades that could transform our outmoded nineteenth century system into one that is democratic, sustainable, and serves the needs of the twenty-first century.”

“In Banking on the People, attorney Ellen Brown provides a much-needed roadmap for reforming monetary and credit systems and the central banks now strangling our common human future. More lucidly that any other expert I know, she shows how we can break the grip of predatory financialization now extracting value from real peoples’ productive activities all over the world. Her in-depth research and systemic overview of the global and local politics of money-creation and credit allocation include all the viable proposals of global experts and reformers. She reviews many of these reforms: from financial transaction taxes, to a universal basic income to provide purchasing power for the cornucopia of goods and services now produced, to expanding the public banks she so ably promotes via the Public Banking Institute, to returning the Fed and all banks to serving the public utility functions that economies require. This book is a must read for citizens in all societies who see the promising future as we seek to widen democracies and transform to a cleaner, greener, shared prosperity, based on the renewable abundance of free daily energy from our sun.” – Hazel Henderson, CEO of Ethical Markets Media and author of Mapping the Global Transition to the Solar Age and other books.
