There is no longer any doubt that soot, or “particulate matter” emissions are the primary causes of death and illness due to air pollution.  Yet, despite multiple requests BAAQMD has yet to provide any firm timeline for progress on four key actions to reduce particulate matter emissions (PM 2.5) from Bay Area refineries.  The majority of refinery particulate emissions are due to the facilities used to “crack” or break down heavy crude oils into  lighter, useable fuels.  Rules 6-5, for the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, and Rule 9-1 for Fuel Gas Hydrotreating facility have both been promised action to implement known and proven technologies that can drastically reduce emissions.  Yet, we have no timelines to complete these rules.  The same is true for rules to end refinery PM pollution trading or implement a combustion strategy to reduce emissions.

Multiple letters have been sent to the BAAQMD executive leadership and the Board requesting specific timelines, with very vague and unspecific responses by Jack Broadbent.  These letters and Broadbent’s response can be seen here.

This meeting will be our only opportunity all summer to demand that the Board of Directors insist that staff supply a specific action timeline to implement these necessary rules.  We have requested the Board to place this item on the agenda for July 31.  This is a necessary step for Board members to act on our demands and not just listen to “non-agenda item” public comments.

Come to the Board meeting on July 31 and insist that timely and direct actions be taken to immediately reduce particulate emissions from Bay Area refineries to protect the health of all communities.

The Domestic Workers Movement has become one of the most powerful movements led by working class women of color, including Black women and immigrant women. This didn’t happen by accident. Feed The People!

The last Sunday of every month attendees of the OO GA get together a little earlier than usual, at 3 PM (2 PM during cooler months) to share some food with each other and the community.  There should be a table, utensils/plates, meat and veggie entrees and whatnot, courtesy of the Kitchen Committee (such at he is), so just bring yourself, or something to share as well if you’d like.

After the meal the Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets Sundays at 4 PM at the Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. During Daylights Losing Time in the Winter we meet at 3 PM at the plaza, & again, we retreat to the Omni if the rain is a pain.

The OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for more than six years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.
