SALINAS, Calif. (KGO) –Thousands of people are expected in Salinas this weekend for a massive protest against police. Local activists have been demonstrating since Tuesday, after officers shot and killed a man and it was all caught on video.
Protesters believe the shooting was not justified and they point to recent history. This is the third, fatal officer shooting in Salinas since late March…
“Sunday we expect thousands of supporters from outside Salinas coming from the Northern California region, Southern California, leaders from out of state as well, they said their thoughts and prayers are with us,” said Salinas City Councilman Jose Castaneda.
A community meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday at Closer Park.

We have met on a continuous basis for almost two and a half years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally . Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.
The bulk of the work of Occupy Oakland does NOT happen in the General Assembly. It happens in various committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives voluntarily come to the GA and report on past and future actions. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Jena Goodman, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California. Goodman served over 7,000 students as president of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College from 2012-2013. She is also former chair of the Solano County Green Party. She is currently a student at UC Davis studying biodiversity and ecology. Serving as president of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College exposed her to the issues faced by students within the California Community College, University of California, and California State University systems. Goodman believes California’s public schools, colleges and universities hold the key to fixing many of the problems facing California.
Luis Rodriguez, candidate for California State Governor
LA Weekly in 2012 named Luis J. Rodriguez one of the 60 most fascinating people in Los Angeles. Luis is the author of fifteen books in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children’s literature, including the 1993 memoir, Always Running,� La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. Luis has received recognition for his writings from numerous literary societies and publications including PEN Oakland, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund, the Sundance Institute, KCET-TV and others. The Union Bank of California also designated Luis a “Hero of the Community” for his work co-founding and helping run the nonprofit cultural space Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore.
Luis has received recognition as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion” from the Wisdom in Action Foundation, presented by his Holiness, the Dalai Lama. After removing himself from gangs, crime and drugs which he had been exposed to since age 11, Luis at 19 years old embarked on a life-long path of revolutionary organizing, thinking and writing.� In 1976, at age 22, Luis ran for the Los Angeles Unified School Board, impacting future board races for Latinos and progressives. In 2012, he was the Justice Party’s candidate for Vice-President with Presidential candidate and former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson. Luis is married to Maria Trinidad Rodriguez and has four grown children.
In October 2013, Luis embarked on an independent campaign for California Governor.
Barry Hermanson, candidate for U.S. Congress, District 12, San Francisco asks: How is it possible that any politician, like Nancy Pelosi, once elected, never again appears before constituents in a candidate forum or debate? There has been no debate in this Congressional District 12 since 1987. Because of the “top two” primary, only one other candidate will appear on the November 2014 ballot as an alternative to Pelosi. Barry Hermanson intends to be that alternative. He is a long-time activist who played a key role in successful local initiatives such as raising the minimum wage, is championing a platform of global living wages, an improved Medicare for All, and no tuition at all community colleges and public universities in California. He currently serves on the SF Green Party County Council.

It is a common belief amongst politicians, the public, and even top environmentalist leaders that “clean,” renewable, alternative energy sources can almost completely replace our use of fossil fuels in the foreseeable future — thus allowing global industrial society to continue pretty much as it is. All we have to do is ramp up and perfect the use of renewables such as wind, solar, and hydro power. Not so!
We will discuss the aspects of these methodologies that make it highly unlikely that any one, or any combination of them, can replace fossil fuels. For our discussion we will focus primarily on two articles written by the energy and financial analyst Gail Tverberg, shown below, and other sources will be included as well.

Park Garden is under the threat of development. A recent notice posted in the area indicates an intent to build a 6-story building on the lot we garden in.
There is a Design Review hearing at City Hall this coming Wednesday, May 28th, at 4:30pm. We need as many friends, neighbors, and allies to show up and speak out on such issues as:
– The already dangerous traffic situation along the entire length of Park.
– Parking, which is already an issue.
– Pedestrian access, or lack of. We have a birth center across the street.
– Impact of construction on local area.
– Protection of open space and wildlife.
This Design Review hearing will be a great chance for gardeners, neighbors, and allies to make their voices heard. In addition to protecting our hard-earned community space, there are other issues this development will have a negative effect upon, including traffic, pedestrians, parking, and more.
A smaller project was stopped back in 2005, and we may be able to do so again, but we need bodies and voices at this hearing.
Anyone interested in offering logistical support in getting the word out, flyering, going door to door, it would be more than appreciated at this time. We will continue to plant and maintain Park Garden throughout the season, and more than likely through winter, which is always plenty of work. Thanks for your enthused involvement!

Steve Martinot will speak about contemporary developments in Cuba and its international relations. Mr. Martinot has been involved in Cuba solidarity work since 1960 and has led tours to Cuba. His talk will examine the U..S. embargo and the origins of U.S. hostility to Cuba; and will present an overview of the inner social dynamic of political process and political changes on the island. .
Following that, there will be ample time for audience participation in an open discussion in which experiences, views, and ideas about Cuba and solidarity with its struggles.
A rally to support the Salinas Police Department has been organized for Sat. from 11am-2pm. This is a response to that rally. The Direct Action Monterey Network and our comrades in Salinas are mobilizing for a counter demonstration because a pro-cop rally in response to what’s been going on is a pro-murder-of-Latino-farmworkers rally and can not be left unanswered.
This is not about specific cops or their personal attitudes and beliefs. This is about exposing the Salinas PD for being the violent, oppressive institution that it is. Their daily intimidation and harassment, as well as these recent murders, reinforces a racist, exploitative system. We are standing up to them, as well as to those members of the community who are voicing their support for such an institution.

Saturday May 31st 2014 for the 3rd annual Speak out for victims of police violence/brutality. Bring your friends, invite your friends. In 2010 16 year old James Rivera Jr, was driving a mini van that was violently forced off of the road by multiple Police units. The vehicle was forced to crash, going through two residential garages, rendering the vehicle immobile. Stockton Police officers Gregory Dunn and Eric Azarvand, with deputy Sheriff John Nesbit, got out of their patrol cars and within seconds opened fire on James. A total of forty eight rounds entered the childs body from the sides and behind, killing him at the scene. Eric Azarvand, is said to have been firing with an AR-15 assault rifle. James’ family still has not received the police reports, video or picture evidence, or James’ personal property. Join his family and other members of the community who support the family or have been victims themselves.
Speakers for other families who have been victimized by the Police are expected to be attending, as well as our brothers and sisters from the East Bay area who will be coming out to support these families, and give some educational speeches about the commonalities of police violence taking place almost daily, and all around us.
If you are against Police Violence, if you or a loved one has ever been subject to non warranted police attacks, you need to be here on the 31st of May, and have your voice heard.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a permit to Kinder Morgan to operate its crude-by-rail project to import highly explosive and toxic crude oil into Richmond, a low income community of color already burdened by pollution caused by the fossil fuel industry. BAAQMD issued the permit without public notice or opportunities for public comment. The number of trains carrying crude oil has risen dramatically due to increased drilling in both the Alberta tar sands in Canada and the Bakken shale oil area of North Dakota, and the number of serious accidents has also increased.
We the people must raise our voices and send a loud and clear message that more pollution from dirty crude oil and tar sands is not acceptable in the bay area or anywhere else.

The 1.5 acres of the farm we planted out on April 26th are taking off, and right now we are producing many pounds of delicious greens. Lettuces and kale, chard, mustard greens, etc. Perfect for salad and stir frys! We’ll be weeding and harvesting! And you can take some fresh and healthy food home with you (bring paper bags if you have them!).
Also this Sunday, two of your favorite farmers will be celebrating a joint birthday party, with a bbq grill and possibly some a fiddling or other music. And on a sadder note, one of your other favorite farmers will be leaving us and is moving away for good. So come down to say “happy birthday”, “goodbye”, or “nice to meet you” 🙂
