Crimethinc Tour in Oakland: Benefit for Oakland IWOC @ Omni Commons
Dec 6 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
crimethinc.jpg Come out to hear from one of the longest running anarchist media collectives in existence.

The event will benefit the Oakland chapter of the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC), who will be serving dinner at 6 PM – a delicious fusion of Puerto Rican and Filipino food.

Currently, CrimethInc. agents are traversing the West Coast of the US, distributing anarchist literature at three book fairs and offering three different presentations in at least ten different cities. This is a crucial moment, with clashes intensifying in various parts of the world; it’s a good time to strengthen our connections, sharpen our analyses, and strategize together for the next round. We’ll be revisiting our book about the last cycle of struggles, From Democracy to Freedom, as it relates to the questions confronting social movements today, and drawing on dialogue with participants in the movements unfolding right now. Come join us!

Trump/Pence Out Now!
Dec 14 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

“There is no Santa Claus, and he will not remove Trump and Pence. It’s on us. Trump/Pence #OUTNOW!”

This is a month of flash protests, banner drops, rapidly responding to sharp political events, and other actions, including “moving protests” – on public transit or by car caravan – to disturb the air and get the word out on a massive scale.

The centerpiece of the month will be mass protests on December 14, injecting the demand “Trump/Pence #OUTNOW!” into the holidays to shake off the numbing mass-consumerism daze.

If we truly want to bring joy to children everywhere in this season, we must put an end to the regime that locks them in cages and imperils their future.

PG&E: We Need Power to Live! @ PG&E HQ
Dec 16 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Join Diablo Rising Tide and many allies at PG&E corporate headquarters to #ReclaimOurPower and start a wave of action that continues through the winter. There will be speakers, programming, and more! Accessible and kid-friendly.

The action will demand that PG&E:

1. GIVE BACK ALL SHAREHOLDER PROFITS UNTIL PG&E CAN SAFELY PROVIDE POWER. STOP PROFITING OFF PEOPLE’S LIVES.

PG&E has paid out billions in shareholder dividends to predatory investors, while people are dying due to PG&E’s negligence. PG&E has failed to upgrade infrastructure for the stresses we face amidst climate change. Their equipment failures start fires that burn down cities, displace whole communities, and poison the air we breathe across entire regions. PG&E dodges accountability by continuing to seek executive bonuses amidst bankruptcy, shutting down power instead of repairing their equipment, and spending thousands on an exclusive retreat the day before the largest shutoffs.

2. INVEST IN VULNERABLE PEOPLE’S BASIC POWER NEEDS. STOP PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK.

Disabled people have died in the shut offs — even one loss is too many. Ten more years of blackouts are unacceptable because blackouts kill disabled people and harm Black and Brown, working class and poor communities. #NoBodyIsDisposable! PG&E must invest in: solar-powered batteries to power the equipment of every medical baseline customer during power outages; HEPA air filters for chronically ill people, elders, and children in areas impacted by fire smoke; groceries for people who live paycheck to paycheck; alternative lodging for people whose homes depend on power to survive; compensation for small businesses who experienced losses during the shutoffs; and payouts to victims of PG&E-caused fires.

3. TURN PG&E OVER TO THE PEOPLE.

PG&E has a well documented history of criminal negligence of its infrastructure, which has caused fires, death, and destruction. Now, PG&E has claimed that it will take ten years to fix California’s grid — that means 10 more years of rolling black outs with the public footing the bill. This is unacceptable and will consistently put so many lives at risk. We won’t let PG&E continue with their negligence. A public takeover of the grid will allow for the needs of the public, rather than shareholders, to be the priority. By switching to a publicly owned grid, California can create a more democratized, decentralized, and sustainable power grid for all. #CleanPowerToThePeople

U.S. Troops Out of Iraq! @ Powell St. BART
Jan 4 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

National Day of Action U.S. Troops Out of Iraq!
Answer Coalition

On Saturday, January 4 the ANSWER Coalition, CODEPINK and others are calling on people from around the United States to organize local demonstrations to demand: NO MORE U.S. TROOPS TO IRAQ OR THE MIDDLE EAST! U.S. OUT OF IRAQ NOW! and NO WAR/NO SANCTIONS ON IRAN!

In response to the massive protests in Iraq following the latest U.S. aerial assault that killed scores of Iraqis, Donald Trump has ordered 750 more U.S. troops to the Middle East and potentially 3,000 more. This is in addition to the 5,200 U.S. troops already stationed in Iraq. Every U.S. president over the last 28 years has ordered the bombing of Iraq. The decision by Donald Trump and the Pentagon to launch new air assaults against Iraqis in the past week ignited nationwide resistance by Iraqis who want to reclaim their full sovereignty and do not want Iraq to be used in a U.S. war on Iran.

More than a million Iraqis have died during the past 28 years as a consequence of U.S. occupation, bombings and sanctions. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops have either been killed or suffered life-changing wounds. The U.S. government has spent more than $3 trillion in the ongoing occupation and bombing of this oil rich country. Instead of taking the United States out of this endless war, Trump is building up U.S. forces in the region and threatening a war with Iran.

Initiators for this call include the ANSWER Coalition, CODEPINK, Popular Resistance, World Beyond War and many other anti-war and peace organizations. If you want to add your name as an endorser click here.

Save Our Democracy, Protest Facebook
Jan 9 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Reclaim the Commons – Enough is Enough – January 9

By now, many of us want to throw Facebook over the side of a bridge. Privacy violations, government orders, hate speech, disinformation, censorship …. the list goes on.

But here’s the reality. FB is a communications platform that reaches billions of people, a public town square and a powerful influencer. It isn’t easy to build up that kind of scale again and it won’t be quick.

Zuckerberg got lucky. It’s the people that make social media and we make it every day. It needs to work for us, not against us.

The world’s biggest social media platform has basically done nothing to head off massive disinformation campaigns, blatant lies and hateful extremism. It has put profits ahead of social good, the health of democracy, and the personal safety of many.

We’ve let them. But that can stop. We’re teaming up with a coalition of like-minded organizations and individuals to force Facebook to clean up its act.

On January 9th, we’re paying a visit to 1 Hacker Way to say the jig is up.

Even the company’s own employees know what needs to happen. Facebook just isn’t listening.

Which means we need to say it a little louder.

We will no longer tolerate the company’s paralysis in the face of the harm they are causing. They can take action and the public will make them.

We hope you’ll join Media Alliance, Global Exchange, Credo Action, Code Pink, MediaJustice, Courage Campaign and many others on January 9th.

We have a bus from SF to Menlo Park and back. Tickets are $15 R/T. Reserve a seat here.

If you are a meta type, here is the Facebook event for the Facebook protest.

If you can’t come, you can support the January 9 action online by participating in #BlackOutFaceBook. Replace your profile picture and cover photo with a black box to mourn our lost public commons and start the countdown to reclaiming it.

As we told the press:  We’re not willing to cede a communications network that reaches billions of people to the unfettered practices of a corporation that cares more about its profits than about our democracy. Not without a fight.

Happy Holidays and lets fix Facebook once and for all. (supported by the collective power of the MediaJustice network)

Intentional Activism @ East Bay Community Space
Jan 18 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Intentional Activism – What if we could – wait for it – have fun AND create the world we want to live in at the same time?

Intentional Activism - What if we could - wait for it - have fun AND create the world we want to live in at the same time?

Do you feel passionate about social justice, but don’t know where to get started?

Are you a seasoned activist experiencing burnout?

What if activism didn’t have to feel like you’re preparing for battle? What if we could – wait for it – have fun AND create the world we want to live in at the same time?

In activist circles it can often feel like a competition of who is the most “woke,” which prevents folks from getting involved in fear getting publicly shamed or rejected for not knowing enough right off the bat. For those who have been around the block, the competitive environment can be emotionally taxing, leading to burnout.

As activists our intention is to create positive change, but it’s important to acknowledge that intent does not always equal impact.

While it can be sexy to march in the streets and protest, protesting is only one small facet of activist work. Sustainable momentum towards social justice starts with planting seeds of change, which requires creating space for folks to learn and grow. This includes both, allies looking to get more involved, and folks whose beliefs are motivated by fear.

Come join the intentional activist community in a 4 hour workshop where you will:

  • Get started in activism in a safe space

  • Learn what subconscious beliefs are stagnating your activist efforts

  • Move past that sneaky little ego to create meaningful impact

  • Reduce burnout by practicing boundaries

You don’t have to be perfect or know all of the answers to start creating ripples in the pond. There is no “right” way to be an activist. We’re all learning as we go along. Why not learn together? Why not start now? If not now, when?

Accessibility:

Entrance and all gender bathrooms located on the 1st floor – no stairs or steps. Please arrive scent free to create an inclusive space for folks with chemical sensitivities. Learn more about why and how here.

RSVP online today for sliding scale

Pay more at the door.

Facilitator:

Quinn Williams (he / him) is a queer, polyamorous, genderless liberation coach. He’s passionate about the collective liberation of the human race. As a compassion activist he awakens consciousness through living with boundless, unconditional love and radical authenticity. As a certified ACCC ontological coach, he works 1:1 with folks to liberate themselves from internalized systems of oppression so they experience the world with uninhibited joy and wonder. He also hosts LGBTQIA inclusivity trainings and workshops that move folks past the ego and social conditioning so they can heal.

CRCAA 5 Methods Workshop
Jan 19 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

CRC Allies & Accomplices (CRCAA) is calling on white folks to join us to talk about how to effectively fight against the persistent re-establishment of white supremacy by incorporating the 5 methods in your life, work, and organizing. This event is part of APTP’s #96Hours of action to #ReclaimMLKOak.

We know that white supremacy is the status quo, and that if we do not actively combat it, white supremacy will persistently re-establish itself – no matter where we are. We believe that to effectively combat white supremacy, white people must divest of our power and weaponize our privilege. We have identified 5 methods by which to do just this, and we want to share them with you!

WHO IS CRCAA?
CRCAA is the white solidarity arm of Community Ready Corps, a Black grassroots organization that combats white supremacy and actively builds and supports self determination. CRCAA organizes white people to effectively contribute to anti-racist struggles, and we do so in direct & disciplined relationship with Black leadership.

Alternatives to Policing: How Not to Call the Cops Ever @ first Congregational Church of Oakland
Jan 19 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

This month we will learn from a community of people who have practiced not calling the police for more than 20 years while living through their own collective traumas, colonization, gentrification, family violence, eviction, incarceration, displacement, betrayal and attempted takedown.

Here is a description from POOR Magazine/Homefulness:

“This workshop will include teaching on poor and traumatized peoples accountability, how to REdefine a western wite supremacist notion of security, and how to hold each other through trauma and into a true definition of interdependent safety.

Walking this walk among a poor and indigneous peoples-led movement means facing our demons ALL THE TIME because we all come out of collective trauma experiences of racism, wite supremacy, ablism, family violence, false borders, eviction, houselessness, criminalization, elder/child abuse, sexual violence, rape, incarceration, poLICE violence genderism, hate crimes and so much more.”

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

POOR Magazine is a poor people led/indigenous people led, grassroots non-profit,arts organization dedicated to providing revolutionary media access, art, education and advocacy to silenced youth, adults and elders in poverty across the globe.

HOMEFULNESS is a poor people led/indigenous people led revolution: a sweat equity, permanent co-housing, education, arts and social change project for houseless and formerly houseless families and individuals in deep East Oakland/Huichin

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP SERIES

A growing coalition of organizations in the Bay Area is coming together to explore alternatives to calling the police to our campuses and into our neighborhoods. Over the coming year, we will be offering a series of workshops to explore alternatives to calling the police. Some of these workshops will provide deepening analysis and a grounding in alternative ways of thinking about community safety. Others will provide practical skills. All of them will lift up a transformative justice framework and emphasize the importance of self and community care.

The Coalition includes First Congregational Church of Oakland, Kehilla Community Synagogue, Qal’bu Maryam, Jewish Voice for Peace, Skyline Community Church, Oakland Peace Center, Oakland LBGTQ Community Center, SURJ-Bay Area, and the Omni Collective. We are eager to partner with additional organizations so please contact us if you are interested!
