Environmental Justice Panel on Biden’s EJ Executive Order @ Online
Feb 23 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Juan Parras

Just over one year has passed since President Biden signed an Executive Order, directing all federal agencies to prioritize climate and environmental justice.  What is the significance of this groundbreaking Executive Order, what progress has been made since it was signed, and what still needs to happen both in the Biden administration and in Congress?

During the conversation, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and learn how we can act to support passing the Environmental Justice for All Act, which will confront environmental racism head-on by prioritizing solutions that reduce pollution at a scale needed to significantly improve public health and quality of life.

Register here.

Tech Wars Building the force against surveillance and policing in the digital world. @ Online
Feb 23 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

This 5-part course is designed for anyone interested in studying technology and data as the new frontier in organizing against the systems of enforcement and criminalization that harm our communities.

Three years since beginning our monumental #NoTechForICE campaign, we’re launching this course to share resources we’ve developed and to create a digital space for deepening our collective understanding of the ever-expanding state of surveillance––and how to organize against it.

By signing up for this course, you will hear from organizers, professors, and movement leaders who contribute towards this powerful movement for a surveillance-free future. Lessons will cover: data colonialism, race and policing, immigration enforcement, border militarization, global migration, organizing tools, and more.

Alongside key speakers, you will engage with selected readings, reflection questions, and meet other people thinking through these issues of 21st century technologies in their own communities. Join us every two weeks for one hour as we learn together and continue to build a path that centers communities targeted by the detention and deportation machinery, policing, and military operations.

We know that left unchecked, we will be facing down a new world order designed and controlled by big tech and enabled by the government.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH US!

Session Dates

Live sessions will take place biweekly on Wednesdays for one hour at 3pm PST/5PM CST/6pm EST. Lesson materials and content for each lesson will be unlocked prior to the live session.

Digital Rally for Climate Action @ Online
Feb 24 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Put POTUS On Notice: Digital Rally

President Biden campaigned on being a climate champion. But a year into his presidency – after millions of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and froontline communities and young people turned out in record numbers to the polls in the middle of a global pandemic to elect him – we’ve seeen Biden fail to tackle the climate crisis with the urgency it demands. Biden will give his first State of the Union address on March 1st. Before then, we’re gathering with partners in the Build Back Fossil Free coalition for a Peoples State of the Union to demand that Biden stop approving fossil fuel projects and declare a climate emergency.

JOIN the Build Back Fossil Free coalition for an energizing digital rally on Feb 24th at 5:00pm.

BAAQMD Meetings on Valero Emissions @ Online
Feb 24 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

BAAQMD Meetings on Valero Emissions, February 24 & March 15

Exactly what harmful organic compounds have our friends in Benicia been breathing during all the years the Valero refinery failed to report its emissions?  BAAQMD will hold two important informational meetings to discuss the ongoing Serious Emission Violations incurred by the refinery.  Jack Broadbent, the Air District’s Executive Officer/Air Pollution Control Officer, has said:

“Valero’s disregard for air quality regulations and public safety in the surrounding community warrants decisive action and significant penalties to deter violations in the future.  Valero did not report or control the emissions from this source as required by Air District regulations, state and federal law, so we are requesting approval of an abatement order to provide transparency as we seek to hold Valero accountable for its actions.”

Broadbent described this as a “major shift” in the handling of enforcement cases.

The first meeting is Thursday, February 24, from 6 to 8 pm.  Air District staff will be present to discuss these violations during the meeting.  More information is here.

26th Haiti Solidarity March & Rally @ Mission & 7th St.
Feb 26 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join Haiti Action Committee for a February 26th march and protest
commemorating the 18th year of continued US neo-colonial intervention
and occupation of Haiti since the Feb. 29th 2004 coup that overthrew
Haiti’s democratic government. Since then, the US government has backed
a series of corrupt and brutal regimes which have brought Haiti nothing
but misery, violence and chaos.

Across Haiti, popular organizations are calling for the end of the
US-backed regime and the installation of a transitional government. Yet
the Biden Administration continues to insist on its choice of prime
minister, Ariel Henry, who has no mandate and no legitimacy.

As it attempts to thwart moves towards ending dictatorship in Haiti, the
Biden Administration has deported more than 20,000 Haitian refugees, in
one of the speediest mass deportations in US history. Having fled from
conditions produced by US policy in Haiti, they are now being sent back
into the US-created nightmare they fled.

This is a time for all of us to stand in solidarity with Haiti. [1]

Please call, tweet and/or email President Biden to demand:

Stop the expulsions and deportations of Haitian refugees! End all
support for the Ariel Henry dictatorship!

Call the White House TUESDAY to THURSDAY, 11am-3pm ET

The US Covid Catastrophe: Pathology of a Failed Decaying System  @ Online
Feb 27 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82812417704?pwd=NTJLczViRGg4K0c2Um9MMXFjSVNrdz09

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Almost two years have passed, and we in the US are now approaching 80,000,000 cases and close to 1,000,000 Covid deaths – the largest number of any country in the world – with no clear end in sight.

The pandemic has swept through US society, leaving a path of disease, suffering, death, political and social upheaval, and economic destruction in its wake. The response by the US  government and capitalist politicians has been a complete disaster.

This Sunday at the Marxist Library, we will review the destructive impact of the pandemic, the catastrophic capitalist response, political and economic repercussions, and a prognosis for our future.

Our speaker will be Allan Miller of the ICSS Program Committee.

LOGIN INFORMATION

Our Zoom room will be opened up, as usual, at 10:15 for anyone to join and discuss technical matters, catch up with each other, say Hi, etc.. The program (and recording) will begin as close to 10:30 am as possible and will end at 12:30, but the Waiting Room will remain open until about 1 pm for informal discussion.
