Community Democracy Project @ Omni Commons Basement
Mar 19 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

The Community Democracy Project is your connection to direct democracy in Oakland! Convened out of Occupy Oakland in Fall 2011, we’re gathering steam on a campaign to bring the people back in touch with the city’s resources through participatory budgeting.

Picture this: Across Oakland, Neighborhood Assemblies are regularly
held in every community. People come together to tackle the important issues of their neighborhoods and of the city. At these assemblies, people don’t just have discussions–they learn from one another, from city staff, and they make fundamental decisions about how the city should run. They decide the city budget.

Democratic, community budgeting is a powerful step toward building strong communities, real democracy, and economic justice–and it’s being done all over the world.

The budget of the City Oakland totals more than $1 billion per year. Although part of the budget must be used for specific purposes, still over half of the budget–over $500 billion per year–consists of general purpose funds paid by the taxes, fees, and fines of the people of Oakland. The Mayor and the City Council decide the city budget, with minimal input from the community.

Working together, we will not only get a seat at the table–we will REBUILD the table itself. Participatory democracy is real democracy–join us to say: Local People, Local Resources, Local Power!

Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Mar 26 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall.  If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph.  If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.  (In prior years we have agreed to meet at 4:00 PM during summer hours, that is, once Daylight Savings Time goes back into effect).

On every last Sunday we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

ooGAOO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Special March 26 Green Sunday: Emeryville Mayor Scott Donahue Registers Green, and Talks About Local Issues Also, a Report-Back on the March 11-12 State Green Party Meeting

Emeryville Mayor Scott Donahue has decided to register Green at our next Green Sunday, on March 26 – please join us to celebrate! (Note: due to the March 11-12 state Green Party meeting, we will not be holding Green Sunday this month on the second Sunday – instead, it will be held on the 4th Sunday of March).

Four years after graduating art school in Philadelphia, Scott discovered that Emeryville had an abundance of empty warehouse space, and he’s been in Emeryville ever since. He is a co-founder of the Emeryville Artist Cooperative, and is also an avid biker and longtime proponent of bikeability in Emeryville.

Scott was elected to the City Council in 2014, and became Mayor a few months ago. Scott will talk about why he’s decided to register Green, and about local Emeryville issues. In addition, we will also have a report-back about the March 11-12 state Green Party Meeting in Bakersfield, which will be the best-attended state meeting in many years, with Jill Stein being the featured Saturday evening speaker.

Intro to SURJ Meeting @ Oakland Asian Cultural Cente
Mar 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Want to get involved with SURJ Bay Area? Come learn about our current work and activities. You’ll also hear about SURJ committees, as well as upcoming workshops and events. We’ll answer your questions, and share how you can get involved in the movement for racial justice.

Beginning this month, we are holding intro meetings twice a month.

ccessibility Information:
We ask that attendees please refrain from wearing scented or fragranced body products or laundry detergent, to support access for people with chemical sensitivities. See https://eastbaymeditation.org/resources/fragrance-free- at-ebmc/ for more info on going fragrance free. While OACC does attempt to use unscented products as much as possible, they do use some chemically scented cleaning products such as bleach, window cleaner, and possibly the bathroom hand soap. We will provide fragrance free soap in the bathrooms, and will reserve several rows of seating for people who are sure that they are free of fragrances and need to sit in a space that is less scented.

The entrances to Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) are wheelchair accessible. The door ison the second floor and is accessible by elevator, escalator and stairs. You can enter the plaza (which takes up the entire block between 9th and 1 th streets and Webster and Franklin streets) from all directions except 10 th street. The building is ADA compliant: the doors have long handles that open out; we will also have someone at the door. Restrooms have wheelchair accessible stalls, with handles at a reasonable height. Restrooms are gendered with multiple stalls and a urinal in the men’s room at OACC, but we ask everyone to treat them as gender neutral and use whichever restroom feels most comfortable.

If you have additional access needs, questions, or offerings, please email basebuilding@surjbayarea.org

The Peoples Climate Movement-Bay Area: General Assembly @ Greenlining Institute
Mar 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Come to this General Assembly to hear reports from the working groups and committees, to make decisions that will guide our work going forward, and to take part in building turnout for the events.

Three events are being planned. A working group has been established to work on each.

  1. On April 29th from 11am until late afternoon we will gather in the Amphitheater at Lake Merritt for music and spoken word performances, speakers, climate scientists, information booths and hands-on activities for all ages throughout the afternoon. A processional march around the lake will take place in the late afternoon.
  2. Sometime prior to April 29th, we will conduct a Community Environmental Justice Town Hall Forum in West Oakland so that public officials who have responsibility for addressing the effects of climate change can hear from members of the most impacted frontline communities. UPDATE: Barbara Lee was invited, but we learned she will not be available until sometime later in the Spring or Summer. We will need to decide whether to go forward with just local public officials or wait for a date when she can attend.
  3. On May 1st, we will organize an Environmental Justice Contingent in the Oakland May Day rally and march in solidarity with immigrants and victims of Islamophobia, racism, nativism, xenophobia, sexism and homophobia. There will be a rally at 3pm at Fruitvale Plaza and then a march at 4pm to San Antonio Park. We will designate an area where our contingent can assemble.

In addition we will support the March for Science on Earth Day (April 22) in San Francisco and the Tax Day March on April 15.

If you want to work on any of these working groups, or help with logistics, security, communications, outreach or other committees, please come to this important General Assembly. Bring your ideas, your enthusiasm and your friends.

Your involvement makes a difference!
Please share with others. Invite your Facebook Friends.
Help spread the word!!!

Oakland Privacy: Fighting Against the Surveillance State in the Age of Trump. @ Omni Commons
Mar 29 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Join the Oakland Privacy Working Group to organize against the surveillance state,  against Urban Shield, and to advocate for privacy and surveillance regulation ordinances to be passed around the Bay Area, including the Alameda and San Francisco County Boards of Supervisors, the BART Board of Directors, and by the Oakland and Berkeley City Councils.

We are also engaged in the fight against Predictive Policing and other “pre-crime” and “thought-crime” abominations, drones, improper use of police body cameras, ALPRs, requirements for “backdoors” to your cellphone and against other invasions of privacy by our benighted City, County, State and Federal Governments.

op-logo.2.1OPWG originally came together to fight against the Domain Awareness Center (DAC), Oakland’s citywide networked mass surveillance hub. OPWG was instrumental in stopping the DAC from becoming a city-wide spying network; its members helped draft the Privacy Policy that puts further restrictions on the now Port-restricted DAC, and made Oakland’s new Privacy Advisory Commission to the City Council happen.  We were also the lead in having Alameda County pass the most comprehensive privacy and usage policy in the country for deployment of “Stingray” technology (cell phone interceptors).  Oakland and Fremont have followed suit. In conjunction with other groups we fight against Urban Shield and other killer-cop trainings.

We have presented our work at RightsCon in San Francisco and at Left Forum and HOPE in New York City.

If you would like to attend our meeting and would like a quick introduction to what we’re doing before we dive right into the thick of our agenda, send email to  contact@oaklandprivacy.org and one of us will arange to meet you before the meeting.

Stop by and learn how you can help guard our right not to be spied on by the government. Look on the whiteboard inside near the entrance to the OMNI for our exact location within the OMNI.

Apr 2 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Citizens’ Climate Lobby was created in 2007 as a volunteer-driven organization to focus on one climate solution: enacting a way to price carbon, the “carbon fee and dividend.” Marti Roach, CCL Contra Costa Chapter leader, will provide details on the carbon fee and dividend policy, how it is predicted to work, and the role this solution plays in the transition to a clean energy economy. She will also address alternate views on market-based and revenue-neutral concerns. Suggested reading: “The Carbon Tax is Doomed” bit.ly/2ny4ZuW.
