Rock In the New Year with Resistance to Police Murder!

We Can’t Breathe!

On New Year’s Eve, as the clock winds down on 2014, the powers that be will hope to be ringing in a new year that carries forward business as usual. That must not be allowed to go down because business as usual in Amerikkka includes wanton police murder of Black people. The refusal of grand juries in Ferguson and Staten Island to indict the cops who murdered Michael Brown and Eric Garner made this clear. So the powerful, beautiful and necessary outpourings that have disrupted this society’s normal routine must continue and escalate on New Year’s Eve and into the New Year.

We should live in a society where those who are entrusted with public safety would sooner risk their own lives than kill or injure an innocent person. But in this society, cops who brutalize and murder are given the benefit of the doubt and are almost never punished in any way for their crimes. This is illegitimate and unacceptable. It must be STOPPED, and it’s up to us to stop it! On New Year’s Eve, we must act in many different ways to do just that.

If you think that police murder must STOP, be out in the streets with that message on New Year’s Eve. Say in a loud, clear voice—NO NEW YEAR UNDER THIS OLD SYSTEM! And—WE CAN’T BREATHE! Bring your whistles and blow them loudly. Bring your signs and banners.

And if you think that torture, that violence against women and attacks on women’s rights, that attacks on immigrants and the pillaging of the environment of the planet, that U.S. wars for empire and attacks on people for who they love and how they love and more must be stopped; JOIN US in the streets on New Year’s Eve. Bring your signs and banners too. Figure out imaginative ways to say NO MORE to all these horrors.

“You may well ask: ‘Why direct action? Why sit ins, marches and so forth? Isn’t negotiation a better path?’ You are quite right in calling for negotiation. Indeed, this is the very purpose of direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored. My citing the creation of tension as part of the work of the nonviolent resister may sound rather shocking. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal, so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood. The purpose of our direct action program is to create a situation so crisis packed that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation.”

FTP March, Iteration 3.0 Jan,18, 2015 – Fuck the police Parameters

Due to the fact that most of our internal issues on each march and action to date have come from a lack of information on what the tactical parameters of a particular action are expected to be, FTPC will be calling for tactical parameters on this and all future FTP marches that may change as we learn and practice our skills in the streets.

Note that these are the wishes by the callers of the march. In the interests of solidarity please respect these parameters. These are being called for this march only. This goes both ways — please be respectful enough of the event to not pursue certain actions at this time if they are being put on the “please don’t” list; likewise, if you are uncomfortable with someone performing an action that is acceptable within the march parameters DO NOT INTERFERE with them. This is respect for diversity of tactics, and also proper solidarity in the face of our common enemy. There will come a day that this practice, discipline and restraint will serve us well as a unit.

If you cannot follow the parameters DO NOT ATTEND. They will be read before the march during the rally. People will be given the opportunity to back out if they feel they cannot respect the tactics, with no loss of face.

Cages Kill! Freedom Rally!

At least 6 people have died in the county jail while in the hands of the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department and California Forensics Medical Group (CFMG) since August 2012. In April 2013, we organized a historic march and speakout, highlighting sheriff violence faced by people inside the County Jail that inspired the Santa Cruz County Grand Jury to investigate the jail’s deadly conditions.

The grand jury report named the April 6th demonstration as a primary catalyst for the investigation. In September 2014, the Grand Jury released its Final Report, which included recommendations to improve physical and mental health services in the jail. Nearly all of the research was met with utter denial from the Sheriff’s Department and CFMG, continuing a trend of disrespect for the community and confirming that they operate with little to no accountability.

These deaths are caused by the same pattern of unaccountability that recently allowed Officer Darren Wilson to walk free after killing Michael Brown. From Ferguson to Santa Cruz, it is clear that our criminal justice system targets the most vulnerable members of society: people of color, women, trans and queer people, people with disabilities, the poor, and the homeless.

Without fierce community resistance, this pattern will continue.

With the solidarity of local, national, and international movements, we are organizing a march and rally to demand that:

• 1. The Board of Supervisors cancel its contract with California Forensic Medical Group.
• 2. The Sheriff’s Department and CFMG accept responsibility for the unnatural deaths and implement the Grand Jury recommendations involving the expansion of Crisis Intervention Team mental health services.
• 3. Solitary confinement/administrative segregation and other forms of torture, such as the “restraint chair,” be abolished.
• 4. The County cancel the $25 million planned expansion of Rountree Detention Center and invest in community-based social services.

Come protest landlord/speculator Ann Kihagi-Swain to get her to stop pushing out tenants in over 10 buildings, with harassment, fake notices, and multiple Owner Move Ins.

Lease violations evictions for minor things are way up in SF, especially from new building owners. Landlord Ann Kihagi-Swain is one of the worst; using multiple names she bought up over 10 buildings this last summer and fall. Soon after buying the buildings she has giving most tenants 3 day notices: for everything from shoes in the hallway, to illegal roommates for partners who have lived there over 10 years, to claiming an elderly tenant is selling drugs. Her and her lawyer, the infamous eviction lawyer Karen Uchiyama, give 3rd and final notices to tenants who never receiving a first notice. She sends tenants threatening texts at all hours and enters their units when they aren’t there.

Help us stop the harassment and keep teachers, seniors and families in their homes. We will meet at Harvey Milk Plaza and march to the landlords home.

Animal Defense League – San Francisco will be organizing events for the week of action against Skanska USA. Skanska USA is being targeted nationally for its decision to accept a contract to build a new, underground animal testing facility for the University of Washington.

The University of Washington (UW) has a long history of animal neglect that has resulted in the institution being cited, fined, and even placed on probation by the USDA. If the construction of this new animal research facility goes forward the numbers of animals at the mercy of the UW will increase significantly. It estimated that the number of primates used could increase by 280, the number of pigs used could double, and the number of rodents could go up by 10 – 20%. Additionally, the UW’s capacity to house animals kept in pens could double in capacity.

We have a rare opportunity to stop this lab from being constructed. Please join us as we put the pressure on Skanska to cut their contract with the University of Washington!

It takes community power to end the war on Black communities. Join us Tues, Feb 10th @ 5:30pm to demand Berkeley City Council take legislative action to address police brutality and militarization of the Berkeley Police Department.

We will meet at Oxford Ave and Center St. at 5:30PM.
We will march to the city council and rally for black lives.
We need the city of Berkeley to act RIGHT NOW and be in solidarity with the growing movement for Black Lives.

Background:

There is a growing movement for Black Lives which escalated when the people of Ferguson took to the streets in response to Officer Darren Wilson’s murder of Mike Brown. Back in December, Berkeley joined the national call to disrupt business as usual to elevate the declaration that #BlackLivesMatter.

The police responded to the peaceful protesters with high technology military grade weaponry. As a result, women, children, students and community members were tear gassed and beat with over the shoulder baton strikes and jailed by the Berkeley Police. Community members often say Ferguson is everywhere, and we felt that in December with the grotesque police response to peaceful protesting in Berkeley.
We also felt this back in 2013 when the police brutally murdered Kayla Moore, who was a black transgender woman with schizophrenia. Kayla Moore was experiencing a psychiatric emergency when police pinned her down and suffocated her to death in her own home. She was a Berkeley resident living on Allston Way apartments.

Additional Information
The city council will be voting on two resolutions dealing with police brutality & militarization and Ferguson’s National Demands.

The first item is a resolution of Ferguson’s National Demands. The second item is in regards to the December protest that erupted throughout the nation, including in Berkeley, CA.

The motion will prohibit police forms of violence such as over the shoulder baton strikes and use of tear gas against protesters until the Police Review Commission makes a recommendation to the council.

The mayor has delayed this item since December. He hoped that the energy would dissipate, that people will stop paying attention. After months of delay, the resolution is finally up for a vote. The police are fighting back against this simple policy.

The Berkeley City Council has a choice on Tuesday. Which side will they stand on? We are on the freedom side.

On Tuesday, February 3, 38 year-old mother of two Yuvette Henderson was gunned down by the Emeryville Police Department.

Her crime? Allegedly shoplifting from Home Depot.

She was chased down, cornered and gunned down by the police who executed her utilizing a hand gun, a shot gun and a military-style assault rifle in broad daylight in a residential area.

Just a week prior, a white man pulled a gun on OPD and was taken into custody … alive.

Join us for a speak out/rally at the Emeryville Police Department at 10:00 am and then a MARCH FOR YUVETTE.

The Campaign to Date:

APTP initiated an immediate response to Yuvette’s murder in the form of a vigil that took place the night she was killed. APTP also conducted a people’s investigation during which many people countered the police department’s claims that Yuvette was carrying a gun.

Even in the first interview, when the police were asked if she had a gun, they responded with “We got a report that the suspect had a gun.” A gun was not found on her person but in the vicinity. The police also note that they remembered to turn their body cameras on AFTER the murder.

The following Tuesday, APTP led a small group to deliver letters to the Oakland Police Department, the Emeryville Police Department, Home Depot, Sports Authority and Extra Space Storage. The letters asked the businesses for their accounting of the day’s event and for access to the video tapes that must have captured the shooting.

Our Demands Include

– Release of the video tapes that show the shooting of Yuvette Henderson
– Leave without pay for the officers involved while they are being investigated and ultimately their termination from EPD
– The immediate return or destruction of all military styled weapons and accessories by OPD and EPD
– An explanation for what happen to Yuvette inside of the Home Depot and why she never saw the paramedics

Yesterday, 60 heritage trees from farmer Gill’s arboretum met a violent death at the Gill Tract. This was the UC’s initial move to begin clearing the way for their proposed housing and shopping complex. They caught us off guard, and for good reason: there is an active lawsuit on appeal in the county courts, contesting the development’s detrimental environmental impact.

Knowing the community would mobilize to defend the trees, the UC hired a huge demolition team, cutting down the trees with lightening speed. The last trees were in the process of being destroyed at 9am, as farm supporters arrived.

This is a blatant escalation on the part of the UC and in return, we shall hold a TREE MURDER PROTEST and rally. Meet at the corner of Monroe and San Pablo Ave in Albany tomorrow, Feb 27, at 5pm. It is very important to be on time.

“The 60 trees that were cut down present a massive environmental injustice to the local community. This area has long been known for its dangerous air pollution from the freeway and the Pacific Steel Casting factories. It is already in the 78th percentile for asthma, and this destruction is happening right next to children in Oceanview Elementary and the University Village. The EIR highlights that the proposed development would be bringing in 6,500 new cars per day on Monroe street. This has got to be stopped, and we must replant.” Vanessa Raditz

The politicians can do nothing but attempt to manage the disaster or cash in on the crisis. We have to stand together and begin to fight. Cops and Condos go hand in hand!

On Thursday, February 26th two undercover SFPD officers shot and killed a Latino man in the Mission District. He was allegedly trying to steal a bicycle. As San Francisco landlords steal homes everyday without being killed for their actions, it is absurd that someone had to die over a bike.

The Sacramento police have outrageously charged a young black woman for lynching. The police and county DA falsely claim that ANSWER Coalition activist Maile Hampton is guilty of obstructing justice and removing a person from police custody. In fact its the police who are guilty of obstructing justice, in this case and historically. These charges against Maile are in reality “revenge” charges against leading activists of the Black Lives Matter movement. We in the ANSWER Coalition, along with a wide network of endorsing organizations, are mobilizing to fight back against this police repression.

1. We DEMAND that the “revenge charges” against Maile are immediately dropped!

2. We DEMAND an end to the repression of the Black Lives Matter movement!

3. We DEMAND an end to police brutality and the war against black and brown youth!
