Sunflower Alliance Meeting: Contra Costa, A Model for Just Transition @ Online
Apr 11 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

RSVP to action@ sunflower-alliance.org by 10 am on Friday, April 9 to receive a Zoom link, along with the agenda and notes about our campaigns.

We are very pleased to announce that Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia will be a special guest at our next meeting, where we’ll discuss late-breaking Just Transition-related news on the county, state and federal levels.

California Assemblymember Tim Grayson and Congressman Mark DeSaulnier have recently introduced legislation that would provide processes and resources for Contra Costa County to plan a just transition from fossil fuels.  Learn about these bills and what they could mean for workers and the community.  And watch this space for more details as speakers from state and federal legislative offices confirm.

Please come with suggestions, questions and  your grassroots enthusiasm.  Good things are definitely in motion!

Green Sunday: Julian Assange and Press Freedom @ Online
Apr 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Zoom connect here.

Capitalism and US imperialism are faced with a crisis of legitimacy brought about by first amendment rights given to the Press. Journalists are protected from control by laws passed by Congress. However, private control of the press has allowed corporations and the capitalist class to maintain gatekeeper status for most information, news and propaganda. The internet changed that by opening a door to information and publications not controlled by the power establishment. Organizations like Wikileaks were free to reveal the brutality, corruption and hypocrisy of Western governments and corporate pillaging. In response, the US and its allies are attempting to control journalism by defining a “journalist class” so they can delegitimize journalists and any news outlet outside their control.

Although Assange has been a member of the Australian MEAA journalist union since 2011, western governments and corporate media are attempting to characterize him as “illegitimate” and therefore not covered by first amendment rights, opening him to charges under the 1918 Espionage Act. This attack on Assange is designed to create fear within journalism and to set a precedent that state power to control information is global. The ruthless and illegal prosecution and imprisonment of Assange is not only about the vicious repression of an individual who defied western imperialism. These events reveal western governments’ desperate collusion to undermine all Press Freedom in an attempt to maintain the capitalist power structure.

For the April Green Sunday, Steve Zeltzer will discuss the role of Assange as a journalist, the attack on journalists and journalism by the capitalist class and the role of the media worker union and labor in general in taking up the case of Julian Assange. Kim White will provide an introduction to the Wikileaks archives so people will gain an understanding of what is contained within the archives with the goal of providing them with the tools to conduct their own searches.

Steve Zeltzer is a member of CWA Pacifica Media Workers Freelance unit, the Producer of WorkWeek and Executive Producer of Pacifica’s Covid, Race & Democracy. He is also a Founder of www.laborfest.net and a Member of United Front Committee For A Labor Party: https://www.facebook.com/masslaborpartyusa/

Kim White has been involved in many organizations including: Vallejo for Community Planned Renewal (VCPR), a grass roots group that staved off an attempt by Shell Oil and Bechtel to locate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Mare Island; Occupy Oakland Research Group; Strike/Debt Bay Area; Occupy Forum San Francisco; and Vallejo Participatory Budgeting.

Apr 12 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

OTU’s Mission

The Oakland Tenants Union is an organization of housing activists dedicated to protecting tenant rights and interests. OTU does this by working directly with tenants in their struggle with landlords, impacting legislation and public policy about housing, community education, and working with other organizations committed to furthering renters’ rights. The Oakland Tenants Union is open to anyone who shares our core values and who believes that tenants themselves have the primary responsibility to work on their own behalf.

Monthly Meetings

The Oakland Tenants Union meets regularly at 7:00 pm on the second Monday evening of each month. Our monthly meetings are held in the Community Room of the Madison Park Apartments, 100 – 9th Street (at Oak Street, across from the Lake Merritt BART Station). To enter, gently knock on the window of the room to the right of the main entrance to the building. At the meetings, first we focus on general issues affecting renters city-wide and then second we offer advice to renters regarding their individual concerns.

If you have an issue, a question, or need advice about a tenant/landlord issue, please call us at (510) 704-5276. Leave a message with your name and phone number and someone will get back to you.

Chevron: Stop Funding Burmese Dictatorship @ San Francisco Chevron Headquarters
Apr 15 all-day

Chevron is not only polluting the environment and politics in Richmond, South America,  and beyond, but is also propping up the murderous military dictatorship in Burma (Myanmar). Join a national day of action telling Chevron to suspend all payments to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise until democracy is restored.

The Myanmar labor movement has led the millions-strong street demonstrations from the beginning, as well as a general strike since March 8. The Myanmar military has responded with brutal, repression. They have used war-grade weaponry on the people’s protests for weeks, killing nearly 600 peaceful protestors. They have arrested thousands, squarely targeting union leaders.
The General Federation of Workers of Myanmar (FGWM) is calling for comprehensive economic sanctions on Myanmar to pressure the military, specifically highlighting Myanmar oil and gas, the largest source of revenue for the Myanmar military. Chevron is the largest US corporate presence in Myanmar, paying over $560 million to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise between 2015 and 2019.
Besides calling on Chevron to suspend payments to the Burmese oil industry, the FGWM is calling on the US government to place sanctions on the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.
The FGWM and the Coalition Against Chevron in Myanmar is calling for a national day of action to demand that no US dollars go to the military dictatorship.

IF YOU’RE WONDERING: BURMA OR MYANMAR?

“The new name (Myanmar) [has]  been accepted by most countries, the United Nations, and other major international organizations. A few governments, activist groups, and news media outlets, however, still cling to the old name [Burma], primarily as a protest against the former military regime’s refusal to put the question of a name change to the people of Myanmar.

“Questioned about the official name of the country soon after her party took office in 2016, Aung San Suu Kyi stated her continuing preference for the colonial-era term Burma, but said that both names were acceptable.”

From Petroleum to Biorefining: Climate Boon or Boondoggle? @ Online
Apr 15 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Register here for the zoom link.

Are biofuels better or worse for the climate than fossil fuels?

Two Bay Area oil refineries recently announced a pivot from petroleum refining to the production of renewable diesel. And they’re not alone: in the face of current market uncertainties, the oil industry is accelerating its shift toward renewables.  But how “renewable” are their new products?  And what exactly are the local and global consequences of this escalating trend?

At this invaluable webinar, two international experts on biofuels, Drs. Stephanie Searle and Chris Malins, will present the basics of first- and second-generation biofuels and guide us to a greater understanding of what is at stake.  They will address:

• The industry arguments supporting the pivot;
• A brief history of sustainability concerns within the environmental community over the years;
• The climate consequences of refining various feedstocks, and the turn to vegetable oils;
• Air pollution impacts of refining and combusting biodiesel and renewable diesel; and
• The larger policy framework.

This webinar is a special opportunity to hear from two cutting-edge energy policy specialists with a knack for communicating clearly about complex issues.  Come with your questions and leave with a few more!

Please register here.

Dr. Stephanie Searle is the Fuels Program Director at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). Her bio can be found at https://theicct.org/stephanie-searle.

Dr. Chris Malins is the principal analyst at Cerulogy, a UK-based consultancy on low- carbon fuels, clean fuels, the environmental impacts of bioenergy, carbon intensity of fossil fuel production, and aviation biofuels.  His bio is at https://www.cerulogy.com/about-us/ .

Sponsored by 350 Bay Area, 350 Contra Costa, Baykeeper, Biofuelwatch, Community Energy reSource, Crockett-Rodeo United Defend the Environment, Natural Resources Defense Council, Rodeo Citizens Association, Stand.earth, and the Sunflower Alliance.

Demand Care NOT Cops! Kayla Moore’s 50th birthday celebration ~ Rally & March! @ Civic Center Park
Apr 17 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Join us in celebrating the life of Kayla Moore, who died at the hands of the Berkeley Police in 2013. Kayla was a Black trans loved one who was living with a mental health condition. She was killed by the BPD during a mental health wellness check. Kayla would have been 50 years old this year.

We believe that Kayla Moore would still be alive if there had been an appropriate response while she was experiencing mental health crisis. Join us in demanding CARE NOT COPS.

This conversation is timely: last summer, the City Council approved an initiative for a Specialized Care Unit (SCU) that would respond to mental health crises without police involvement. Berkeley Copwatch demands that the City of Berkeley follow through on their commitment.

  • The SCU must be well funded, so that it can actually be effective
  • The SCU must be dispatched without police
  • Since the police will not be responding to these incidents, funding must come directly from the police budget
  • There must be options for long-term care in addition to crisis intervention

Let’s continue the fight for Justice 4 Kayla Moore! We need to make sure that what happened to her never happens again.

Environmental Destruction and the Ecosocialist Solution @ Online
Apr 18 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Today’s ecological reality is that we are on the edge of a mass extinction, while corporations protect their bottom lines by pushing reusable bags, cups, straws, and “green” carbon offsets. Individual responsibility and greenwashed products are not the solutions we need. Addressing the full scope of the problem will take ecosocialist remedies, to change the system from the ground up – literally. Join us for a riveting discussion of real climate fixes from a socialist feminist perspective. The program will highlight Samuel Rubin, Marxist geographical anthropologist, ecosocialist and member of the Freedom Socialist Party.
