Come support No Coal in Oakland in court! @ United States Courthouse/Federal Building, 17th Floor, Room 4
Apr 20 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

This is the first important hearing in the lawsuit by developer Phil Tagami attempting to overturn the City of Oakland’s ban on coal storage and handling at the former Oakland Army Base.

The Court will hear a motion by Sierra Club and San Francisco Baykeeper to be accepted as “intervenors” so that they can participate as full parties supporting the City’s effort to defeat Tagami’s lawsuit.

In addition, the court will consider two motions to dismiss sections of the lawsuit – one seeking dismissaal of Tagami’s claim for breach of contract and one seeking dismissal of Tagami’s claim that his constitutional rights were violated by the City’s ban because it discriminated against out-of-state commercial interests and unduly burdened interstate commerce.

If these motions for dismissal are granted, the case will be considerably narrowed, which makes it easier to defend the ban.

After the hearing, we will gather to debrief and discuss the implications of the court decisions.

Earth Day Action for Environmental & Climate Justice @ US EPA, Region 9 Office
Apr 21 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

not-without-us-squareOn this 92nd day of the Trump Administration, Earth Day 2017 takes on a special urgency.  Over 60 groups from urban, rural and Indigenous communities and their allies will rally together in front of the regional offices of the EPA, with delegations coming from across California and even Arizona.   This rally will be followed by a march to the Federal Building at the corner of 7th and Mission Streets.

As Trump regime’s attacks on environmental protections, health, civil rights and justice continue to escalate, so does our movement’s need to unite and resist.

Planting Justice Work Party! @ Planting Justice Nursery
Apr 22 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Happy Equinox! Spring is here ~ plants are leafing out, peaches and plums are blooming, and folks are planting our perennial plants throughout the country.  It is the busiest time of the year for the nursery with finishing up cuttings, seeding, grafting fruit trees, weeding and fertilizing, potting up bare root plants, and shipping out plant orders.  We are very grateful to the many volunteers that have gotten their hands dirty with us this past month.  We had nearly 30 volunteers come through at our work party on March 4th, had about 40 college students on Alternative Spring Break from Penn St. and University of LaVerne come through for tours and volunteer work, and had teachers from Slide Ranch on the coast come out.  Our work and plant knowledge is being spread to youth in many places.  Much thanks to all of the hands that have helped us in the busyness of Spring!

We have two upcoming volunteer work parties  on Saturdays in April:
April 8th 10am-4pm
April 22nd (Earth Day!) 9am-4pm

On Earth Day, join us for a Volunteer Day of fruit tree planting, weeding, cleaning and more including a Super Citrus Fruit Tree Sale, a Sale of Salves and Tinctures from our gardens, a bounce house for kids, and a Kale Smoothie Pop Up.  Please bring your own Water, Pot Luck Food and Good Attitude!  We are building community as well as growing plants!

Berkeley March for Science @ Sproul Plaza
Apr 22 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Today’s political environment bears witness to unprecedented attacks on truth, science, and our planet. This Earth Day, April 22nd, we march to affirm that:

– public funding for scientific research is a social good
– climate change is real
– environmental abuses are human rights abuses
– scientific truths are not subject to political manipulation
– scientists MUST engage with government to support these truths

Bring your lab coats! Bring your rally signs! We gather together to defend our planet and our institutions through civic engagement and sustained political action at local, state, and federal levels.

RESIST!

Please note: This event is in the evening, so it will be possible to support both this march and other marches for science in San Francisco or Sacramento, or to participate in UC Berkeley’s Cal Day. We support ALL efforts to promote Earth rights and science literacy on this important day, and we want all to have the opportunity to fully participate!

National Call To Action! Justice for Diallo Neal! @ Oscar Grant Plaza, Oakland City Hall
Apr 22 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Dear Friends, Families and Social Justice Advocates,

Together We Stand and Open Circle – Families United For Justice is announcing a National Day of Action for Justice for Diallo Neal. We are calling on all families and coalitions to join us and the mother of Diallo Neal, Gilda Baker, as we rally for an investigation to take place.

Diallo Neal was killed in a motorcycle “accident” in October 2005 after a chase with California Highway Patrol. Five years passed before his mother, Gilda Baker, began to put together the pieces of her son’s death. Eyewitnesses came forward saying that a CHP motorbike had shoved Diallo Neal, causing the fatal accident. A private investigator’s report revealed a number of issues with an inconsistent police narrative. We believe that Diallo Neal’s death was a homicide and that an investigation needs to take place.

Please join us on April 22nd from 5-7pm(Pacific) in front of Oakland City Hall for a rally to demand justice for Diallo. We will have several speakers and will be streaming worldwide on Facebook Live as well. Leading up to our main event on Saturday the 22nd, we ask that you Join us on Tuesday, April 18th at the Oakland City Council meeting, Chamber 3, at 5:30 pm to deliver the story of Diallo Neal and ask for a criminal investigation and that the city Councilmembers come out to support our rally on the 22th.

We are so very lucky to be in the Bay Area, the home of the Black Panthers and a place with such deep roots in social justice. We ask that you come out and build an unstoppable coalition with us.

Note-
This link will take you to the flyer for our National Call to Action Action email/call campaign which will be taking place all day on April 22, 2017. We encourage everyone to share this with folks out of the area who would like to make a difference and aren’t able to attend the rally.

The last National Call to Action held by Together We Stand resulted in almost 20,000 emails in 48 hours. Let’s beat this record and get JUSTICE for DIALLO ❤

Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Apr 23 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall.  If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph.  If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.  (Note: we meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months,  once Daylight Savings Time springs forward we tend to assemble at 4 PM).

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

ooGAOO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

General Assembly Standard Agenda

  1. Welcome & Introductions
  2. Reports from Committees, Caucuses, & Independent Organizations
  3. Announcements
  4. (Optional) Discussion Topic
