Stop the (Chase) Money Pipeline @ Chase Bank
Mar 27 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Join a national day of action to demand that JP Morgan Chase Bank — the biggest funder of the fossil fuel industry — stop the money pipeline! The last Friday in March is the next in a series of “Stop the Money Pipeline events organized by a growing coalition of climate groups demanding that JP Morgan Chase immediately divest from fossil fuels.

JPMorgan Chase is by far the biggest funder of the fossil fuel industry worldwide, and the only U.S. funder of the Jordan Cove Pipeline.  In the three years since the Paris Agreement, JPMorgan Chase has provided the fossil fuel industry with $196 billion in financing.  Chase is the #1 banker of arctic oil and gas drilling, the #1 banker of ultra-deepwater oil and gas drilling, the #1 banker of LNG, the #1 U.S. banker of coal mining, and the #2 banker of fracking (right behind Wells Fargo).

To compound the pain, in 2008 JPMorgan Chase received one of the largest bailouts ($25 Billion) from the U.S. government, using that money—taxpayers’ money!—to fund fossil fuel development that could have gone instead to renewable energy.

It’s time to say enough.  Over the last few years, there have been many protests at Chase banks all over the U.S., including more than a few here in the Bay Area.  But now that campaign is getting turbo-charged with the launch of  Stop the Money Pipeline.  Stay tuned for a major national mobilization on Chase scheduled for April 23, the “Finance Day” protest during 2020 Earth Week actions!  The goal is to disrupt business at 1,000 Chase branches all across the country.

When we look at those pictures from Australia, yes, we see the absolute horror of people whose lives are turned upside down and animals that are killed and ecosystems that are wiped out, but we also see, fully visible in those flames, the dollar signs that led to that conflagration. That’s what is at the bottom of the crisis that we face.” —Bill McKibben, before his arrest at a Washington, D.C branch of Chase Bank on January 13, 2020 (quoted by Democracy Now)

Free Them All – Protest in Cars @ Begin at Kaiser Auditorium Parking Lot
Apr 16 @ 11:15 am – 2:00 pm

The main ask is for the release of all people inside Santa Rita jail. There are 15 confirmed cases of Covid-19. That means in reality there are probably at least 150. Brendon Woods, our Public defender said Alameda County is set to be the next Cook County ( It is not a matter of IF they will get the virus, it’s a matter of WHEN.

The plan is to first let everyone know about the action and make car signs and post on social media signs etc and post making them etc.

On Thu, cars will meet up at Lake Merrit BART around 11:15, drive around the county admin building (the targets are D.A. O’Malley and Sheriff Ahern) then drive to Santa Rita jail.

The people in the jail can hear. Honking horns, playing music, banging gongs and drums – tells them they are not forgotten. Amplified sound would be better of course. Anyone with a portable sound/speaker system.

There are ways for EVERYONE to be a part of this action. Many of our leaders cannot participate due to health concerns even from their cars while many others cannot because they cannot afford to risk their freedom.

We are calling out for any attorneys, paralegals etc to provide legal observer support in a visible, deter the police from issuing tickets or arresting our people kind of way.

Earth Day(s) – Extinction Rebellion
Apr 22 – Apr 24 all-day

Next week, millions will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day together, even though we will be physically separated.

Instead of mass protests, from April 22 to 24, youth and adult activists are coming together for Earth Day Live, a three-day live stream focused on climate action. The live stream will include training sessions, performances, and appearances to keep people engaged, informed, and inspired, with speakers including celebrities, politicians, scientists, and youth activists.

Click here to find out more about Earth Day Live and hear about big announcements including the full schedule of events from April 22-24.

We are leaning into healing and togetherness to provide comfort and inspiration during this time of anxiety and the unknown. On all three days, we are centering the stories and voices of frontline, Indigenous, and POC leaders.

Here’s an overview of what’s happening each day:

  • April 22  STRIKE: The 50th anniversary of Earth Day is about demonstrating collective power in the face of today’s multiple crises. There will be performances, conversations, training sessions, and more.
  • April 23  DIVEST: The world’s largest banks have pumped $1.9 trillion into fossil fuels since the 2015 Paris Agreement. We can’t let fossil fuel companies use the pandemic to loot trillions more when people need relief so desperately. Led by the Stop the Money Pipeline Coalition, April 23rd focuses on the role of money in driving the climate crisis.
  • April 24  VOTE: We need leaders who will address the existential threat of climate change, and for this to happen, we need people to show up at the polls. Led by the US Youth Strike Coalition, April 24th will focus on voter registration and feature a digital, relational voter registration challenge to see which region of the country can register the most voters.

Stay tuned for more info about local sessions coming to you from the SF Climate Justice NVDA Spokescouncil on April 23 at 9:00-10:00am and 4:00-5:00pm. To get involved in Youth Vs. Apocalypse’s #NoOneIsDisposable social media campaign, virtual art build, Climate Strike Live Streams, or Green New Deal and Just Transition workshops, email rcostellonic13@gmail.com.

Click here to find out more about Earth Day Live and take part in one of the biggest days of digital action the climate movement has ever seen.

We may be physically separated, but we can and we will come together in solidarity on Earth Day and beyond.

All out to demand Cancel the Rents! Housing for all! @ Parking lot
Apr 25 @ 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

The ANSWER Coalition is endorsing and urging everyone to join and share this action….

All out to demand Cancel the Rents! Housing for all!

SAN FRANCISCO:
1875 Marin St., on the street, 10:30 AM for a press conference.

EAST BAY:
West Oakland, 900 Market parking lot, 9:30 AM

Share on Facebook

Share on Facebook

Join us in your car to demand the cancellation of rents and mortgages statewide, immediate housing for all, and full aid and rights for the undocumented! Let’s make some noise, plaster “Cancel the Rents” and “CancelTheRents.org” on our cars and windows, and make our voices heard! It’s time to send the signal that the working class is fighting back!

Our Demands:

– Cancel all rents and mortgages for homeowners, small landlords, and small businesses, for the duration of the pandemic – no debt accumulation!

– No shutoffs of any utilities.

– Eminent domain over vacant buildings, homes, hotels, to house the homeless or people in precarious housing, such as victims of domestic violence.

– Give full access to housing, income-assistance to all undocumented and informal workers.

– Housing must be a human right, regardless of employment or citizenship status.

Every working-class person has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Millions of people have lost their jobs or seen their paychecks cut. In April, a third of tenants did not pay rent. Many will also make the same decision on May 1st between paying rent or saving that money for food, medical needs, and other necessities. What sounds like an impossible demand – rent and mortgage cancellation – must become a reality because the COVID-19 crisis shows no sign of abating.

The government measures taken so far do not protect tenants for the long term. There is a “moratorium on evictions,” but what will happen when the COVID-19 crisis starts to fade out and we are months late on our rents? There is nothing protecting us from being evicted then. The one time $1200 emergency relief for working class and poor Americans is not enough – and millions of undocumented workers won’t receive any aid at all.

As the capitalist crisis worsens, millions are in danger of being displaced out of their homes. Even after the pandemic eases, workers will be forced to pay thousands of dollars in debt to their landlords making their already unstable housing situation even more precarious. Rents and mortgages must be canceled until the end of the crises with no debt accumulation!

The homeless population in San Francisco has risen by 30% in the past two years, and across the Bay in Oakland, the homeless population has nearly doubled. How can individuals shelter in place without adequate shelter provided by the state? Thousands of hotels, empty buildings, and overpriced units sit vacant while people sleep on the streets without protection. We demand that cities in the Bay Area use the power of eminent domain to immediately house all our neighbors, guided by their input and priorities.

Fill out this form to let us know you’re joining or to sign on with your organization!

CAR RALLY SCHEDULE AND ROUTE:

11 AM:
Cruise through the city’s neighborhoods!

This is a COVID19-safe, car-only rally. We will stay inside our vehicles to protect ourselves and the public. We will ride through the Bayview, Mission, Tenderloin, Chinatown, and more with signs to make our demands heard.

If you can’t make it in person, join our National Day of Action by participating in digital actions.

Ride for Justice for Steven Taylor!
Apr 25 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

#Justice4StevenTaylor: A Mental Health Crisis Should Not Be a Death Sentence

On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Steven Taylor was shot and killed unnecessarily by a San Leandro Police Department Officer. On this Saturday, April 25th – one week after his brutal murder – at 2:30pm, the Anti Police-Terror Project will convene a car caravan to demand justice for him and his family.

Up to 50% of the people killed by law enforcement are in the middle of a mental health crisis. Law enforcement agencies are not equipped to handle these calls, they don’t have adequate training and many of them don’t want the job. These result in unnecessary deaths, trauma and pain. And those that are killed disproportionately Black.

“We are past the time for a shift in how we respond to mental health crises,’ said James Burch of APTP. “That’s why APTP Sacramento launched MH First to create a community-lead response to mental health that responds with compassion and care, not a badge and a gun.”

For the last six years, APTP has been on the Bay Area frontlines in responding to state violence. In the time of COVID-19, organizers have had to shift strategies and tactics. To that end, we will do everything to keep people safe, using social distancing and keeping people in their cars.

We are asking folks to respect the following:

This will be a car caravan to avoid transmission of COVID-19 among participants and the public. We apologize to those who are denied access because of this, and we are looking for ways to make our actions more inclusive during this time.
– We ask everyone to bring masks. We ask folks who want to have their windows down to wear their masks.
– We ask everyone to only ride with folks with whom they are sheltering in place.
– We ask everyone to stay in their cars.
– We ask everyone to follow the lead of our identified security

“There is no other word to describe what happened to Steven Taylor than murder,” said Cat Brooks of the Anti Police-Terror Project. “Police should have cleared the Walmart and used time and distance to deescalate. What’s more, this was a clear violation of state law that limits when LEAs can use deadly force. We are interested in how San Leandro PD has rewritten their Use of Force policy to accommodate the law or if they have done this work at all.”

No State Execution by COVID-19! @ Meet: Larkspur Ferry Terminal Parking Lot, Event at West Gate of San Quentin
May 9 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

No State Execution by COVID-19!
Join the Car Caravan to San Quentin – May 9th
The Labor Action Committee To Free Mumia Abu-Jamal is calling for a car caravan/protest and rally at San Quentin Prison on Saturday May 9th. We demand that Governor Newsom act to prevent prisoners from being infected by this deadly pandemic. Overcrowded and unsanitary conditions which are pervasive in San Quentin and prisons across the country! In the Marion, Ohio prison fully 80% of prisoners have tested positive! Packing inmates like sardines in San Quentin Prison cells will infect many and some will die. Confined spaces like prisons, ICE jails and cruise ships act as incubators of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

Innocent death-row prisoners in San Quentin such as Kevin Cooper, who was blatantly framed by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department for a crime he did not commit
(https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/opinion/sunday/kevin-cooper-jerry-brown-dna.html) could be sentenced to death by insufficient action on this virus! Cooper currently awaits an overdue order from Governor Gavin Newsom to pursue an investigation of his innocence. Newsom has declared his opposition to the death penalty, but Cooper and many other prisoners, due to his inaction could die. We demand the immediate release of the elderly, sick or immune-compromised prisoners, and all those who are close to parole.

Our protest will be held by the West Gate to San Quentin Prison located on Sir Francis Drake Blvd in Larkspur, Marin County. Cars will assemble at 10 AM on May 9th at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal parking lot, which is a 3 minute drive from the prison’s West Gate. The car caravan will depart at 11 AM. There will be a lead car to follow and instructions on the route to follow at the 10 AM meet-up at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal parking lot.

There will be a rally/press conference held near the prison’s West Gate by a maximum of 10 people. Drivers will remain in their car at all times unless they’re participating in the rally on a rotating basis.

Guidelines for This United Front Protest
We will exercise our First Amendment rights to protest horrid prison conditions. Our unifying demand is “No State Executions by COVID-19”. All organizations and individuals who agree with this central message are invited to join us in the action and display their own slogans.

All participants must adhere to the CDC guidelines for this demonstration, using physical distancing. Bring masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and water.
1. One person per car with ID, except for another person from the same household.
2. Participants at the rally will be limited 10 people standing six feet apart. Masks and gloves will be required at the rally site.
3. The caravan route will be presented at the 10 AM meet-up in the Larkspur Ferry Terminal parking lot. The lead car will be carrying a red flag.
4. People should tape their slogans to their cars which we will provide. While driving make noise by honking to let people know why we’re protesting!

Car Rally to #ProtectOaklandWorkers:

Calling on City Council to Pass Emergency Paid Sick Days and Right to
Return to Work Policies

Gather in front of Xfinity & Popeyes

End at Eastmont Mall (by Burger King) by 12:30 pm

Why:

Half the Oakland City Council failed to show up for workers [2] this
week to pass an emergency paid sick days law that would have protected
workers and the community during this pandemic.

We are joining EBASE and other community partners for an action, riding
through the Fruitvale and East Oakland, the areas hardest hit by
COVID-19 [3], to call on Councilmembers Gallo, Taylor and Reid to stand
with Oakland workers.

Join us in sending a message that Oakland’s workers are essential, and
deserve protections!

* Pass a strong Paid Sick Days law, with no loopholes that requires
all employers to provide universal, immediate paid sick leave during a
public health emergency.
* Protect workers’ livelihoods by ensuring that when it is safe to
return to work, they still have a job with a Right to Return policy.
* Stand up the Department of Workplace & Employment Standards to make
worker protections real.

Bring:

* A car
* Signs with Messages:

* Protect Oakland Workers!
* Show Up for Workers!
* Councilmember Gallo: Support Workers!
* Councilmember Taylor: Support Workers!
* Workers Need Paid Sick Days!
* Workers Need the Right to Return to Work!

* A bullhorn, if you have one
* Your protective mask
* We’ll bring a planned route, signs, tape and window paint

Please let us know if you can participate by emailing

Car Caravan at Lake Merritt: Protect City Services
May 26 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Tell Oakland City Council and Mayor Schaaf: Protect our public services!
Circle Lake Merritt

STARTING POINT: Lucky’s parking lot by Lake Merritt

********************************

Mayor Schaaf will be announcing her budget proposal on Tuesday, May 26. During this crisis, in which public services are needed more than ever, we reject all cuts to city services. The City needs to use its ‘rainy day’ reserve money meant for times like this. We are going to caravan around Lake Merritt to show the City Council and Mayor Schaaf that Oakland is united against austerity budgets.

In our fight against austerity, we are confronting both poverty and racism. African-Americans are more likely to die of COVID-19 than any other group in the U.S. Meanwhile, over 70% of city employees are people of color, and almost 40% are African-American. Attacking city workers will only deepen the pain of this crisis for Oakland’s working-class black neighborhoods. To fulfill the promise that black lives matter, we must maintain and restore public services that create access to employment, health care, affordable housing, and more.

The caravan will be clockwise, so it runs along the lake side of the street. We will bring signs and put them on your car for you with safe tape.

Nat’l Day of Car Protests “Cancel the Rents & Mortgages! Make the Banks Pay!
May 30 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Join thousands of people across the country in car caravan protests on Saturday, May 30 to demand the cancellation of rents and mortgages for tenants, homeowners, small landlords and small businesses for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Protesters will adhere to social distancing guidelines and requirements, including wearing mask that have been established to respond to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The effect on the people has been devastating. Nearly 90,000 people in the United States have died and more than 1.5 million have gotten sick as of May 18. 37 million people have lost their jobs since March with millions more jobless to come. We are in worst depression since the 1930s, and it’s getting worse.

As a result of the economic crisis, at least 30 percent of renters will be unable to pay their rent on June 1. No one should lose their housing for any reason in this crisis! The rents and mortgages must be cancelled!

A short-term suspension of evictions is not enough to save people’s homes. And the meager rescue stimulus payments the government provided are long gone for most people. Even if there is another one, it will be needed for food, healthcare and other necessities.

Canceling rents and mortgage payments for the duration of the crisis can be won! Since the start of the pandemic in the U.S., the federal government has pumped at least 5 trillion dollars into the big banks and the largest corporations. Only $249 billion was allocated for unemployment funding. This massive gift to the banks — the 1% at the top, compared to the 160 million U.S. workers — is 20 times the amount allotted for the unemployed. The money is there, it is simply a question of whether it is used to bail out Wall Street or to protect the homes of poor and working people. This wealth and the vast number of vacant housing units can be used to provide shelter for the homeless as well.

The government has the authority to cancel the rent. In fact, a bill has already been introduced in Congress, the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act. But this will be bitterly opposed by the landlords and big banks. The mobilization of the people, done in a socially responsible way, is urgently needed to ensure housing for all.

If you agree with the call to Cancel the Rents and Mortgage Payments for tenants, homeowners, small landlords and small businesses, join or organize a Car Caravan in your area on Saturday, May 30!

From Covid-19 to Cops: We Can’t Breathe Caravan
Jun 1 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

People’s Strike Bay Area will caravan from downtown Oakland to Frutivale to the Coliseum on Monday, June 1st, from 12pm to 3pm. Because “normal” was not. The current situation is untenable. And the future is only an opportunity if we seize it. We stand with others around the country and around the world on the first of every month to build toward community control of everything.

1) 12PM-12:45PM: Rally @ State Building
if OSHA can’t protect workers, we don’t need it. No Safety, No Work. No work, No Rent. No Safeguards, No School.

2) 1:15PM-2PM: Speakout @ Oscar Grant Station/Fruitvale Plaza
In memory of Oscar Grant, Richard “Pedie” Perez, Steven Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, we stand together to clarify: America’s “enough is enough” moment ended about 500 years ago.

3) 2:30PM-3PM: Rally @ Oracle Arena/Oakland Coliseum
We need investment in communities, neighborhoods and future generations, not yuppie playgrounds and tourist attractions. Another Oakland, another California, another world, is possible.

As Arundhati Roy says, the pandemic is a portal.

Volunteer opportunities abound.

This event will be livestreamed here: People’s Strike Bay Area will caravan from downtown Oakland to Frutivale to the Coliseum on Monday, June 1st, from 12pm to 3pm.
