Internet Identity Workshop IIW XXXI @ Online
Oct 21 all-day

You belong at IIW this Fall!  You’ll acquire the real-time pulse of genuinely disruptive technologies that are the foundation of today’s important Internet movements.

Every IIW moves topics, code, and projects downfield.  Name an identity topic and it’s likely that more substantial discussion and work has been done at IIW than any other conference!

IIW XXXI will be our second online event. While we miss being with everyone in person, we have found that the online event isn’t just an acceptable substitute, but a real workshop in its own right with considerable advantages. Being virtual will allow many more people from around the world to participate in the important discussions that happen at each IIW.

“From my perspective, IIW is the seminal conference for the digital identity space. The feedback & technical insight garnered here is so invaluable for my company that we build our internal product roadmap around the twice-yearly conference. I was admittedly skeptical about the event going fully virtual, but the organizers managed the transition with little to no loss in collaborative nature or connections. I was very pleased with the value and turnout, and am already looking forward to the next one!”

Karyl Fowler | CEO | transmute industries

How It Works

IIW is at its heart a participatory conference, it is an Open Space unConference.  It has no keynotes or panels, so it’s about getting stuff done!

Our schedule will be much the same as the online event in April, with some additional session times. The agenda will be created live each day by attendees present at the opening circle (the same as when we meet F2F in Mountain View).

Through dozens of sessions, you’ll have plenty of chances to present your ideas, engage in challenging dialog, and make new professional connections.  The Open Space unConference format is perfect for a rapidly moving field where the organizing team cannot what needs to be discussed. We know great people will be at IIW XXXI. The attendees who have a passion for learning and contributing to the event makes it the success it is.

This is the time and place that you get to discuss, share your knowledge, work on and learn about anything & everything related to Internet Identity today. You can find Books of Proceedings for all previous IIW Events here.

Why You Should Participate

This is the time and place that you get to discuss, share your knowledge, work on and learn about anything & everything related to Internet Identity TODAY.

Identity is at the heart of all the topics listed below, along with others we hope to see discussed at IIW in October:

  • Two-Factor Authentication (U2F)
  • Use Managed Accesss (UMA)
  • Self-Sovereign and Blockchain Based Identity
  • Verifiable Credentials and DIDs
  • Credential Ecosystems
  • Identity Fraud
  • OAuth
  • OpenID Connect
  • Token Binding
  • Personal API’s & Domain of One’s Own
  • Personal Sovereignty
  • International Perspectives
  • Biometrics
  • Identity Proofing
  • Identity Verification for Internet Payments
  • Identity and Privacy in Healthcare
  • API of the W3C
  • Cryptographic Credentials
  • Efforts to “Reboot the Web of Trust”
  • Multisignal Authentication
  • Authentication of US Government Employees
  • Authentication in the Enterprise/Extended Enterprise
  • Identity in the Context of Mobile Device Managment
  • IoT (The Internet of Things)
  • VRM (Vendor Relationship Management)
  • Data Liberation and Portability
  • Earned (rather than coerced) Customer Loyalty ~ CRM
  • Privacy in the Age of Surveillance

See the growing list of potential topics put forth by those who have already registered for IIWXXXI.

“IIW XXX completely changed my mind about ‘virtual conferences’. I was quite skeptical that it could be even remotely as effective as the in-person IIW events—of which I’ve never missed a single one. But IIW XXX not only captured most of the same interactions, it actually proved to be MORE INTENSE than the in-person event because there are multiple channels alive at the same time—the Zoom Rooms, the Zoom chat, and then the Garden rooms and side channels that form and keep going throughout the event. Plus being virtual meant many more people around the world could attend. In fact, it was so engaging that I left the event feeling that at least one of every two IIWs should be virtual now.”

March Against Extinction @ Union Square
Oct 24 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
It’s been over 600 Days since SF Declared the Climate Emergency, and Nothing Has Happened.

Over 4 million acres have burned (an area larger than Connecticut)—in 2018, 1.8 million acres burned. Over 31 people and thousands of wild and farmed animals have perished in the last month due to the raging wildfires, drought, and erratic weather conditions. SFO and Oakland International Airports are due to be inoperable and underwater by 2050 OR SOONER. We cannot accept more business as usual, unless we desire extinction.

Extinction Rebellion is demanding that the government act NOW!

Come join us as we chalk the sidewalks, drop banners, post flyers, and mobilize the masses with face-to-face (socially distanced) outreach. At 2:00pm, we will hold speak outs at the steps of SF City Hall and demand that our government #TellTheTruth, #ActNow by establishing a #NetZero2025 carbon emissions goal, and convening a #CitizensAssembly to reach that goal. WE MUST SECURE A LIVABLE FUTURE FOR ALL BY 2030.. We will need YOUR support! We will be following COVID-19 safety guidelines, so please bring your face cover and remember to socially distance!

Protect The Results @ Facebook HQ
Nov 4 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Facebook will play a key role in enabling–or preventing–disinformation about the election results from disrupting our democracy. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
Millions of people throughout the US will take to the streets on Wednesday, November 4th if Donald Trump refuses to concede after losing the presidential election or claims victory before all the votes are counted. Facebook will play a key role in enabling–or preventing–disinformation about the election results from disrupting our democracy.

That’s why the Protest Facebook coalition has organized a November 4th Protect the Results protest outside of Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park to insist that Facebook stop misinformation from candidates, campaigns, and others who declare victory on Facebook before the final election results are in.

This will be a short, visual action during which we’ll display a human billboard that says TRUTH MATTERS.

We are holding the event at 4 PM so that participants have time to join other local Protect the Results actions that start later in the evening. We hope this protest won’t be necessary, but we’ll be ready in case it is.

Please register for the event so we can provide you with any last-minute updates.

This event, which is among the more than 400 Protect the Results events scheduled across the country, is sponsored by the Protest Facebook coalition, which is co-led by San Francisco Bay Area pro-democracy and media accountability organizations Media Alliance and Global Exchange. Learn more at www.protestfacebook.org.

Can’t get to Menlo Park? You can still Protect the Results. Cyber voter suppression poses a major threat to voter access, which is why we need grassroots power to provide voter support and to disrupt disinformation.

Submit all the misinformation and disinformation that you find as tips at https://reportdisinfo.org/

Socialist Night School: Towards a Green New Deal @ ONLINE, VIA 'ZOOM'
Nov 5 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Join Zoom Meeting

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87801691687?pwd=R1ZCdjl3UVdEd2hpTi9la2dUVzZOQT09

In 2018 the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released an alarming report, stating that the world needed to steeply cut its carbon emissions and make radical changes in order to limit the planet’s temperature from rising to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. If that goal wasn’t met, the report predicted a horrifying increase in suffering for almost all life and ecological collapses.

In America, this report was met on the political Left by sustained calls for the abolition of capitalist exploitation of people and the planet. The rationale was that capitalism’s imperative for endless economic growth required massive amounts of energy, the vast majority of which is still produced through fossil fuels. Some of the specific responses were reinvigorated support for anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist struggles by Indigenous peoples, surges in attendance at climate strikes, and great support for proposals like the Green New Deal by elected officials.

East Bay DSA will explore this theme in a Socialist Night School mini-series, co-organized with our Green New Deal Committee. These three events will explore what it means to be an ecosocialist, the Red Deal and Indigenous struggle, and how to fight for a Green New Deal after Bernie.

——

In this final Night School in our mini-series, we’ll attempt to answer a perennial question in our prior sessions: “How do we actually win a Green New Deal, especially after Bernie’s loss?” We’ve dedicated this time to making a space for us to attempt an answer.

Our readings offer an array of ways to understand a Green New Deal and strategies and tactics we might employ, to supplement our own ideas. And we’re joined by Thea Riofrancos, whose experience and expertise has already proved invaluable by way of her books, and who will speak with us about the continuing struggle to win a Green New Deal and our planet.

Thea Riofrancos is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Providence College, a member of DSA Ecosocialist’s working group Steering Committee, and co-author of A Planet to Win and Resource Radicals.

Readings:

Socialism or Barbarism — the fight continues!

“It’s Eco-Socialism or Death”: An Interview With Kali Akuno of Cooperation Jackson

No More Excuses: Join us to Wake the Zuck Up @ Mark Zuckerberg's house
Nov 21 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Let Us Know You’re Coming

Every day on Facebook, Donald Trump lies with impunity about the outcome of the 2020 elections. His posts, including recent ones claiming, “I won the election,” and calling the election fake, rigged, and a hoax, have been shared literally hundreds of thousands of times.

By providing a megaphone for these lies to be spread and amplified with minimal correction, Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, have undermined our social fabric for profit.

Please join us outside of Mark Zuckerberg’s house in San Francisco on Saturday to say we’ve had it.

Since Election Day, our rejected, soon-to-be ex-President and his enablers have been swamping Facebook with lies and conspiracy theories about his defeat in the election. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has only made half-hearted and anemic efforts to slow the onslaught.

Changes to Facebook’s algorithm could have been made long ago to stop it from amplifying posts that contain disinformation about both the election and coronavirus. Instead, these posts have generated billions of views – putting the public’s health and democratic rights at rissk. That’s why it’s high time San Francisco took his name off of our general hospital,”

Sponsored by Global Exchange, Media Alliance, Protest Facebook Coalition, CodePink Golden Gate, SumofUS, Diablo Rising Tide, Indivisible SF Peninsula and CA-14, Raging Grannies Action League, MediaJustice, Resistance SF, SF Green Party and others.

NOTE: During this event, we will wear masks, practice social distancing, and respect SF public health rules re COVID19..

Can’t come? You can help us and sign the petition: Demand Facebook and Twitter end the spread of dangerous election disinformation immediately.

WHY: COVID Pandemic Relief is Needed Now!

The HEROES Act was passed by the House of Representatives back in May, but Majority Leader McConnell has not allowed the bill to be taken up by the Senate.

The HEROES Act would grant a second round of $1200 stimulus checks including to noncitizens/immigrants who file yearly income taxes, extends the $600 weekly unemployment enhancement benefit through January 2021, has an eviction moratorium & emergency rent payment assistance, and allocates funds for safe, secure voting during COVID as well as US Postal Service funds.

Then, the House passed the separate Delivering for America Act to at least protect and fully fund the USPS in time for the November election. That legislation was completely stalled by McConnell, as well.

Instead, McConnell and GOP Senators back the Senate HEALS Act which does not extend the federal moratorium on evictions, has inadequate housing relief, would cut the unemployment enhancement down to $200, allocates enormous sums for the military, and has ZERO provisions for safe voting or the US Postal service.

Under Mitch McConnell’s leadership, Senate Republicans have proposed a bill that will leave citizens and states with fewer protections and funds. However, no second stimulus relief package has been passed so far.

Community Training: How to Request Release For Medically Vulnerable People in ICE Custody @ Online
Dec 15 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join our “Community Training: Requesting ICE Release For Medically Vulnerable People in ICE Custody” webinar.

RSVP: https://actionnetwork.org/events/community-training-requesting-ice-release-for-medically-vulnerable-people-in-ice-custody

Did you know that individuals in ICE custody with COVID-19 risk factors can submit
a request for release? YES!

Earlier this year, a federal district court issued a decision requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to protect medically vulnerable people in their custody and
review the medical records of those detained for potential release

This is good news! There are so many who could benefit, but unfortunately not many know about this opportunity. If you have family or community members currently in ICE detention who have COVID-19 risk factors, it’s important that you find out if this applies to them!

RSVP now to save up your spot!

East Bay DSA’s Direct Action Working Group is excited to continue our Direct Action Training series this weekend! The training will take place on Zoom from 10 am-12 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Attending both days is highly recommended. This training will cover the same ground as the previous Direct Action training which was very well received.

As racist violence, unemployment, evictions, and climate chaos keep increasing, we need to expand our capacity to leverage our collective power. This training series will introduce creative ways to escalate ongoing campaigns, participate in mass uprisings, and keep each other safe in our confrontations with capital and the state.

The training is 4 hours spread across two days. Please attend both days.
