Chevron: Stop Funding Burmese Dictatorship @ San Francisco Chevron Headquarters
Apr 15 all-day

Chevron is not only polluting the environment and politics in Richmond, South America,  and beyond, but is also propping up the murderous military dictatorship in Burma (Myanmar). Join a national day of action telling Chevron to suspend all payments to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise until democracy is restored.

The Myanmar labor movement has led the millions-strong street demonstrations from the beginning, as well as a general strike since March 8. The Myanmar military has responded with brutal, repression. They have used war-grade weaponry on the people’s protests for weeks, killing nearly 600 peaceful protestors. They have arrested thousands, squarely targeting union leaders.
The General Federation of Workers of Myanmar (FGWM) is calling for comprehensive economic sanctions on Myanmar to pressure the military, specifically highlighting Myanmar oil and gas, the largest source of revenue for the Myanmar military. Chevron is the largest US corporate presence in Myanmar, paying over $560 million to the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise between 2015 and 2019.
Besides calling on Chevron to suspend payments to the Burmese oil industry, the FGWM is calling on the US government to place sanctions on the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.
The FGWM and the Coalition Against Chevron in Myanmar is calling for a national day of action to demand that no US dollars go to the military dictatorship.

IF YOU’RE WONDERING: BURMA OR MYANMAR?

“The new name (Myanmar) [has]  been accepted by most countries, the United Nations, and other major international organizations. A few governments, activist groups, and news media outlets, however, still cling to the old name [Burma], primarily as a protest against the former military regime’s refusal to put the question of a name change to the people of Myanmar.

“Questioned about the official name of the country soon after her party took office in 2016, Aung San Suu Kyi stated her continuing preference for the colonial-era term Burma, but said that both names were acceptable.”

Demand Care NOT Cops! Kayla Moore’s 50th birthday celebration ~ Rally & March! @ Civic Center Park
Apr 17 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Join us in celebrating the life of Kayla Moore, who died at the hands of the Berkeley Police in 2013. Kayla was a Black trans loved one who was living with a mental health condition. She was killed by the BPD during a mental health wellness check. Kayla would have been 50 years old this year.

We believe that Kayla Moore would still be alive if there had been an appropriate response while she was experiencing mental health crisis. Join us in demanding CARE NOT COPS.

This conversation is timely: last summer, the City Council approved an initiative for a Specialized Care Unit (SCU) that would respond to mental health crises without police involvement. Berkeley Copwatch demands that the City of Berkeley follow through on their commitment.

  • The SCU must be well funded, so that it can actually be effective
  • The SCU must be dispatched without police
  • Since the police will not be responding to these incidents, funding must come directly from the police budget
  • There must be options for long-term care in addition to crisis intervention

Let’s continue the fight for Justice 4 Kayla Moore! We need to make sure that what happened to her never happens again.

Protest in Solidarity With Hunger Strikers for Yemen
Apr 23 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The current War on Yemen is starving millions of Yemenis as the country faces bombings, blockades, and partition. Foreign powers seek to divide the country in order get their slice of the pie. While some members of the U.S. establishment give lip service to ending the war, it is clear that they have no interest in doing so and do not care about the Yemeni people! We say no to this hypocrisy! We say no to the War on Yemen!

We will be gathering to discuss the hunger strike and the situation in Yemen while also fasting in solidarity with Yemeni-American protestors Iman Saleh and her younger sister, Muna, who are weeks into their hunger strike in Washington, DC. We are also fasting in solidarity with hunger strikers in New York, Boston, and others across the country.

Hey MTC! Stop starving our transit! Unlock our transit money NOW! @ Transbay Terminal Entrance by the Gondola
May 6 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Bay Area transit services are passing up thousands of riders each day and yet the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is holding back $1.67 billion in federal stimulus funds which could be used right now to restore service. They intend to hold back the American Rescue Plan (ARP) instead of using this money for its intended purpose: to restore transit service and the economy and hire more union drivers.

Not only is this a misuse of the stimulus funds, but MTC’s actions will also lead to a self-created crisis in transit as service will not be there as people return to their lives this year, leading to a permanent loss in ridership.

THIS IS A SCANDAL: the agency tasked with saving transit by distributing these funds is instead killing it. Join us as we demand that MTC release the stimulus funds this year in order to restore transit service NOW!

We will meet at the Transbay Terminal (Mission and Fremont street entrance by the Gondola). Then, we’ll march to the MTC Headquarters at 375 Beale Street.

#DefundLine3 Day of Action
May 7 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

For years, Indigenous communities and allies have been opposing the construction of the Line 3 pipeline, which would transport nearly one million barrels of dirty tar sands oil – every single day. Enbridge Energy, the company building the pipeline, has a terrible environmental track record, and this pipeline would violate several treaties with indigenous communities.

Indigenous-led water protectors and allies in Minnesota are taking action every day to stop the construction of Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline – confronting bulldozers, decision-makers, and the politicians that are putting profit before people. Pipelines take billions of dollars to build – and banks like JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Bank of America, TD Ameritrade, Union Bank – as well as insurers like Liberty Mutual – are bankrolling Line 3.

As part of a Global Day of Action May 7th – we’ll be mobilizing in San Francisco’s Financial District to send a clear message to the banks and investors that they must #DefundLine3.

Join us at 10am at the corner of Sansome and Market (E-trade Plaza) as we work to Stop the Money Pipeline. We’ll have plenty of art and signs for people to carry, but feel free to bring any signage that reflects the message of the day– Defund Line 3!

Community safety is always a priority, and we ask everyone in attendance to adhere to the public health guidelines that have been circulated. Please:

Wear a mask at all times
Practice social distancing
Use & bring hand sanitizer
Stay home if you feel sick, or if you have been exposed to anyone with COVID or that is quarantining

You can also RSVP here if you’d rather not let FB know even more about your life than they already do: https://actionnetwork.org/events/san-francisco-defundline3-day-of-action

Richmond Anti-Chevron Day Protest @ Chevron Richmond Refinery, Castro St. gate
May 21 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Join frontline neighbors and many thousands of others around the globe for the 8th annual Global Anti-Chevron Day.  Communities from Richmond to Ecuador to Myanmar will come together in advance of Chevron’s annual shareholders’ meeting to share stories about the impact of Chevron’s environmental destruction, human rights violations, and corruption of our politics.

For over a century, Chevron has poisoned residents of Richmond and the whole S.F. Bay Area with deadly air pollution from its refinery.  Its influence over Richmond politics and nonprofits is legendary—but we’re winning victories in fighting it!

Communities around the globe—in Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Burma (Myanmar) and elsewhere—suffer from Chevron’s deadly water, soil, and air pollution as well as inhumane working conditions and political interference.  Chevron denies any responsibility and continues its destruction in order to keep the oil and profits flowing.

Protest at Chevron HQ! Free Myanmar!
May 26 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
May 26 is the Chevron (US) annual shareholder meeting date and May 28th is the Total (France) annual shareholder meeting date. Activists in the US and France have declared those dates as global days of action against oil companies in Myanmar.

In the US, activists in San Francisco Bay Area are protesting at the Chevron headquarters during the Chevron sharing holder’s meeting on May26th to pressure Chevron to stop paying Myanmar Military due to the coup in the country. There will be protests in other Chevron facilities across the US in the cities such as New York, DC, LA, and Huston.

Chevron and Total are the foreign partners of MOGE (Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise) and operate the Yadana gas pipeline that channels natural gas from Myanmar Andaman Sea to Thailand. The pipeline brings in about $ 150 million a year to the Myanmar military. This revenue is the lifeline of the Myanmar coup council to continue to enslave the population. We must make sure the coup fails. And the payment must be suspended until democracy is restored there.

We strongly urge President Biden and the US to sanction MOGE so that such payments are illegal until democracy is fully restored in Myanmar.
