Three events are being planned. A working group has been established to work on each.

1. On April 29th from 11am until late afternoon we will gather in the Amphitheater at Lake Merritt for music and spoken word performances, speakers, climate scientists, information booths and hands-on activities for all ages throughout the afternoon. A processional march around the lake will take place in the late afternoon.
2. Sometime prior to April 29th, we will conduct a Community Environmental Justice Town Hall Forum in West Oakland so that public officials who have responsibility for addressing the effects of climate change can hear from members of the most impacted frontline communities. UPDATE: Barbara Lee was invited, but we learned she will not be available until sometime later in the Spring or Summer. We will need to decide whether to go forward with just local public officials or wait for a date when she can attend.
3. On May 1st, we will organize an Environmental Justice Contingent in the Oakland May Day rally and march in solidarity with immigrants and victims of Islamophobia, racism, nativism, xenophobia, sexism and homophobia. There will be a rally at 3pm at Fruitvale Plaza and then a march at 4pm to San Antonio Park. We will designate an area where our contingent can assemble.

In addition we will support the March for Science on Earth Day (April 22) in San Francisco and the Tax Day March on April 15.

As many of you know, the foreclosure crisis claimed over 12,000 homes throughout Oakland since 2006, wiping out generations of wealth built by predominantly people of color & paving the way for outside investors to purchase unprecedented numbers of properties, driving up rents and driving out families.

One of the latest victims of this type of economic violence and racist, predatory lending practices, was Dorothy Debose and her family.  Ms. Dorothy, now 76 years old, and the family moved into their home @ 6521 Bancroft Ave in the 1960’s, to one of the few neighborhoods in Oakland at the time where African Americans could actually buy a house.  Some 50 years later, amidst historic displacement, Ms. Dubose’s home was taken from her by Wells Fargo and sold to one of the largest investors in Alameda County, Community Fund LLC, owned by Michael Marr.

After a very questionable foreclosure process and aggressive behavior on behalf of the investor, Dorothy and her nephew, Omar Osiris, a long time organizer and participant in the movement, decided to take a stand.  The family has decided to not be another victim of displacement and wrongful or illegal behavior and began an occupation of the front portion of their family home last week.  Fellow members of ACCE Action supported the family’s right to remain in their home and are working alongside them to see to it they do not get pushed out.

On Wednesday, March 29^th, @ 3pm, Ms. Dorothy, the family with the support of ACCE Action will be publicly launching this fight and they need your help.  Given the extremely aggressive nature of this particular investor, it is important to have their back and support them as much as possible.  We are calling on everyone who believes in long-term families’ right to stay to come out next Wednesday to 6521 Bancroft Ave. in East Oakland, support the family and be part of saying “no” to displacement and the type of race based, economic violence that has pushed so many families from their homes.

The family will be calling on allies, supporters and community to help hold down this action in a number of different ways that we will inform folx about in the coming days.  In the meantime, please let us know if you can support the family this coming Wednesday.  If not, we ask that you sign up for the rapid response team, in the event of an eviction, or take a shift at the house, holding down this action.

Join the Oakland Privacy Working Group to organize against the surveillance state,  against Urban Shield, and to advocate for privacy and surveillance regulation ordinances to be passed around the Bay Area, including the Alameda and San Francisco County Boards of Supervisors, the BART Board of Directors, and by the Oakland and Berkeley City Councils.

We are also engaged in the fight against Predictive Policing and other “pre-crime” and “thought-crime” abominations, drones, improper use of police body cameras, ALPRs, requirements for “backdoors” to your cellphone and against other invasions of privacy by our benighted City, County, State and Federal Governments.

OPWG originally came together to fight against the Domain Awareness Center (DAC), Oakland’s citywide networked mass surveillance hub. OPWG was instrumental in stopping the DAC from becoming a city-wide spying network; its members helped draft the Privacy Policy that puts further restrictions on the now Port-restricted DAC, and made Oakland’s new Privacy Advisory Commission to the City Council happen.  We were also the lead in having Alameda County pass the most comprehensive privacy and usage policy in the country for deployment of “Stingray” technology (cell phone interceptors).  Oakland and Fremont have followed suit. In conjunction with other groups we fight against Urban Shield and other killer-cop trainings.

We have presented our work at RightsCon in San Francisco and at Left Forum and HOPE in New York City.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby was created in 2007 as a volunteer-driven organization to focus on one climate solution: enacting a way to price carbon, the “carbon fee and dividend.” Marti Roach, CCL Contra Costa Chapter leader, will provide details on the carbon fee and dividend policy, how it is predicted to work, and the role this solution plays in the transition to a clean energy economy. The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall.  If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph.  If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.  (Note: we meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months,  once Daylight Savings Time springs forward we tend to assemble at 4 PM).

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

The Oscar Grant Committee Against Police Brutality & State Repression (OGC) is a grassroots democratic organization that was formed as a conscious united front for justice against police brutality. The OGC is involved in the struggle for police accountability and is committed to stopping police brutality.

The team of expert consultants supported by The Friends of the Public Bank of Oakland had a very successful interview with City Administrators on Wednesday, March 25th. We’re now only three weeks away from the Finance Committee meeting at which a report is due on the proposals. We remain optimistic that our proposal for a feasibility study will be selected and funded in full.

OTU’s Mission

The Oakland Tenants Union is an organization of housing activists dedicated to protecting tenant rights and interests. OTU does this by working directly with tenants in their struggle with landlords, impacting legislation and public policy about housing, community education, and working with other organizations committed to furthering renters’ rights. The Oakland Tenants Union is open to anyone who shares our core values and who believes that tenants themselves have the primary responsibility to work on their own behalf.

Monthly Meetings

The Oakland Tenants Union meets regularly at 7:00 pm on the second Monday evening of each month. Our monthly meetings are held in the Community Room of the Madison Park Apartments, 100 – 9th Street (at Oak Street, across from the Lake Merritt BART Station). To enter, gently knock on the window of the room to the right of the main entrance to the building. At the meetings, first we focus on general issues affecting renters city-wide and then second we offer advice to renters regarding their individual concerns.
