Join Oakland Privacy to organize against the surveillance state, police militarization and ICE, and to advocate for surveillance regulation around the Bay and nationwide.

We fight against spy drones, facial recognition, tracking equipment, police body camera secrecy, anti-transparency laws and requirements for “backdoors” to cellphones; we oppose “pre-crime” and “thought-crime,” —  to list just a few invasions of our privacy by all levels of Government, and attempts to hide what government officials, employees and agencies are doing.

We draft and push for privacy legislation for City Councils, at the County level, and in Sacramento. We advocate in op-eds and in the streets. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and believe no one is illegal.

Oakland Privacy originally came together in 2013 to fight against the Domain Awareness Center, Oakland’s citywide networked mass surveillance hub. OP was instrumental in stopping the DAC from becoming a city-wide spying network.  We helped fight and helped win the fight against Urban Shield.

Our major projects currently include local legislation to regulate state surveillance (we got the strongest surveillance regulation ordinance in the country passed in Oakland!), supporting and opposing state legislation as appropriate, battling mass surveillance in the form of facial recognition and other analytics, mass aerial surveillance, ubiquitous license plate readers, and pushing back against ICE.

On September 12th, 2019 we were presented with a Barlow Award by the Electronic Frontier Foundation for our work, and on March 16th, 2021 s James Madison Freedom of Information Award by the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 4 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we tend to meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months from November to early March after Daylights Savings Time.)

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 3 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Tell Governor Newsom:  The recall is over but the fight for Climate Justice is not!

Join climate, environment, and public health advocates to start the clock on Governor Newsom’s post-recall climate justice agenda with a demonstration on the steps of the Capitol Building in Sacramento.

As the public health cost of California’s rapidly worsening wildfire season mounts, the countdown to COP26 represents a new urgency for Governor Newsom to take action and end our state’s biggest contribution to greenhouse gas emissions: fossil fuel extraction.

Come to Sacramento to call on Governor Newsom to STOP issuing new fossil fuel permits, DROP existing production through a just transition, and ROLL out 2,500-f00t health and safety setbacks.

Three weeks ago, getting an abortion in Texas became almost virtually impossible as Senate Bill 8 passed – making it illegal to get an abortion after 5 or 6 weeks no matter the circumstance. The US Supreme Court denied an emergency stay on this bill, and instead allowed it to go into effect immediately. With their upcoming ruling on the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, this lack of action represents a willingness of the court to appease right-wing bigots. With attacks on abortion rights poised to increase as the Supreme Court fails to defend them, and restrictive legislation spreading to other states, we need to act now to block these efforts to restrict abortion rights further – and beyond that, we need to demand that the right to safe, legal abortion be granted for everyone under federal law.

Joe Biden has pledged multiple times to make Roe v Wade, in his words, the “law of the land”. The Democrats have control of both the Presidency and Congress. As right-wing attacks spread, there is no excuse not to act immediately to make abortion legal on a national level; however, they have shown absolutely no willingness to act. It took a mass movement to earn abortion rights in the first place. It will take a mass movement now to defend them.

We will be at the women’s march in San Francisco Oct 2, demanding mass action to defend and extend reproductive rights. The march starts at 11am at Grove St. and Hyde St. in San Francisco – see you there!

Abortion has never been fully accessible, but we are at the risk of losing our reproductive freedom completely. The call to action is clear, and urgent. The relentless attacks from Texas to Mississippi are ramping up quickly.

Anti-choice extremists have a deep desire to return to a time when there was more clear and effective domination and control over queer and trans folks, women, and people of color; they want to revive those old values and societal norms to the point of re-acceptance. The authoritarian agenda of reproductive control is fueled by misogyny and racism – and we must challenge it, together.

We have this opportunity to invite all the people that know us and love us into this important movement and work united as we build something better for our families and communities. As a small powerful group tries to come for our human rights over and over again, we’ll never let go of our vision of reproductive justice; for unfettered abortion access and everything we need to support and grow our families to thrive and live healthy lives.

This is your fight. This is our fight. This impacts all of us. Rise up on October 2!

Five tenants at Raj Properties apartments in Oakland are facing eviction.
Among them is a dear friend and elder Momii,�  a longtime Japantown activist and a current activist on housing and poor people’s issues.�  Momii and family (who have lived at the property for 26 years) and 4 other tenants are facing imminent eviction from their home in Oakland.

Billions of dollars of private capital and public investment are covering a massive international bet on CCUS, the fast-emerging technologies of carbon capture, utilization, and storage currently being promoted as the means to planetary salvation.   State, federal, and global entities ranging from the California Air Resources Board to the U.S. Department of Energy and the International Energy Agency all endorse CCUS as a necessary means of net-zeroing carbon emissions.  Carbon capture has equally captured the imagination and endorsement of multiple Big Green organizations.  But many in the environmental justice movement reject CCUS as a “false solution,” embracing the insight of poet Audre Lorde that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.”

Join us at the next Sunflower Alliance monthly meeting for an in-depth examination of the feasibility, costs, and real-life impacts of the rush to adopt CCUS.   How can we as activists impact policy in the coming legislative season and at the California Air resources Board?  We are excited to announce the following speakers:

          *Danny Cullenward, Policy Director at CarbonPlan.  He’s an energy economist and lawyer focused on the design and implementation of scientifically grounded climate policy. He holds a JD and PhD from Stanford University, where he teaches classes on energy law and climate policy.

          *Kathy McAfee, Professor of International Relations at San Francisco State University, teaches political economy and environmental policy.  Her current research concerns “selling nature to save it” through market-based and alternative responses to unsustainable growth and global warming: carbon trading, payments for ecosystem services, forest conservation in the tropics, and climate justice.

          *Kathy Dervin, Co-Chair of the 350 Bay Area Action Legislative Team, is a veteran climate justice activist and state policy expert, with decades of professional service on the Climate and Health Team in the Office of Health Equity for the California Department of Public Health.

          *Martha Dina Arguello, Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles.  For the past 32 years, Martha has served in the non-profit sector as an advocate, community organizer, and coalition builder.  She joined PSR-LA in 1998 to launch the environmental health programs, and became Executive Director in November 2007.
