More than 500 horses have died at the Golden Gate Fields horse racing track since 2007. Last November, the track was forced to shut down after a coronavirus outbreak there infected more than 300 people. But it reopened this year and already more than 5 horses are dead. It’s time to shut this place down for good, for the horses and the workers.

The anarchist theorist and anthropologist David Graeber died last year—far too young—and produced an outpouring of grief across the global Left. Occurring as it did, during the last quarter of a long, bleak year, with few prospects of dramatic improvements ahead, the loss of Graeber’s optimism not only of the will, but of the intellect, was felt as a body blow.

Building on James Meadway’s article in Salvage #9, Annie Olaloku-Teriba and Barnaby Raine will host a conversation between James and Hannah Appel—David Graeber’s friend and collaborator—on the lessons offered to the Left by Graeber’s life and thought.

The British and Roman empires are often invoked as precedents to the Bush administration’s aggressive foreign policy. But America’s imperial identity was actually shaped much closer to home. In a brilliant excavation of long-obscured history, Empire’s Workshop shows how Latin America has functioned as a proving ground for American strategies and tactics overseas. Historian Greg Grandin follows the United States’ imperial operations from Jefferson’s aspirations for an “empire of liberty” in Cuba and Spanish Florida to Reagan’s support for brutally oppressive but U.S.-friendly regimes in Central America. He traces the origins of Bush’s current policies back to Latin America, where many of the administration’s leading lights first embraced the deployment of military power to advance free market economics and enlisted the evangelical movement in support of their ventures.

Greg Grandin is the author of Fordlandia, Empire’s Workshop, The Last Colonial Massacre, and the award-winning The Blood of Guatemala. An associate professor of Latin American history at New York University, and a Guggenheim fellow, Grandin has served on the United Nations Truth Commission investigating the Guatemalan Civil War and has written for the Los Angeles Times,The Nation, The New Statesman, and The New York Times. 

Brian Edwards-Tiekert is the founder and co-host of UpFront, the morning drive-time public affairs program on KPFA Radio. He started his work in media helping to set up the Independent Media Center in Chiapas, Mexico, where he also did human rights work. He started at KPFA as a beat reporter covering environmental justice issues, during which time he served as a network correspondent during international climate negotiations and produced live national broadcasts covering elections and political conventions. In 2016, he was awarded a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University.

When two parties have effectively bought and sold US democracy, it exists to serve their corporate paymasters NOT the people. The Green Party platform represents the majority point of view within the U.S. and is no longer the alternative; the Green Party is the imperative. To build political power and get on the ballot, would take over 20 years for another party–and is very difficult to do unless you have billions of dollars. Unless people stop voting for ‘lesser evil’, then nothing’s going to change and we along with the planet, are doomed. Imagine for a moment however, if we were able to effectively focus our demands on the kind of agenda and electoral infrastructure the Green Party has with a strong and unified message and everyone actually stood for and voted for what they believed in – then everything not only could, but would actually change.

   Our speaker, Laura Wells, just returned from two weeks in Nicaragua with a delegation sponsored by Sanctions Kill, Alliance for Global Justice, and Friends of the ATC. When she received the announcement for the delegation, she felt instantly inspired. She had already visited the other two countries named as the “Troika of Tyranny” by Trump’s Secretary of State Pompeo. She knew “tyranny” was a lie about Cuba and Venezuela and wanted to see if it was also a lie about Nicaragua. She was especially interested because there is a common impression across the political spectrum that Daniel Ortega was good in the 1980s but became corrupt and authoritarian when he returned to the presidency in 2006.     Laura will report back on the struggles in Latin America and the Caribbean resisting US imperialism to create a better world, based on her visits and studies. In the Q&A, she would like to engage in a robust discussion of what we can learn from the shift in consciousness in Latin America and about their advances toward socialism.

   Laura Wells is a longtime political and social activist. She is a leader in the Green Party, running for Congress in 2018 and for governor in 2010. In 2002 she garnered nearly a half million votes in her run for California state controller. A former financial systems analyst, she supports taxing the rich, implementing public banks, and making significant changes to Proposition 13.

Capitalism and US imperialism are faced with a crisis of legitimacy brought about by first amendment rights given to the Press. Journalists are protected from control by laws passed by Congress. However, private control of the press has allowed corporations and the capitalist class to maintain gatekeeper status for most information, news and propaganda. The internet changed that by opening a door to information and publications not controlled by the power establishment. Organizations like Wikileaks were free to reveal the brutality, corruption and hypocrisy of Western governments and corporate pillaging. In response, the US and its allies are attempting to control journalism by defining a “journalist class” so they can delegitimize journalists and any news outlet outside their control.

Although Assange has been a member of the Australian MEAA journalist union since 2011, western governments and corporate media are attempting to characterize him as “illegitimate” and therefore not covered by first amendment rights, opening him to charges under the 1918 Espionage Act. This attack on Assange is designed to create fear within journalism and to set a precedent that state power to control information is global. The ruthless and illegal prosecution and imprisonment of Assange is not only about the vicious repression of an individual who defied western imperialism. These events reveal western governments’ desperate collusion to undermine all Press Freedom in an attempt to maintain the capitalist power structure.

For the April Green Sunday, Steve Zeltzer will discuss the role of Assange as a journalist, the attack on journalists and journalism by the capitalist class and the role of the media worker union and labor in general in taking up the case of Julian Assange. Kim White will provide an introduction to the Wikileaks archives so people will gain an understanding of what is contained within the archives with the goal of providing them with the tools to conduct their own searches.

Synopsis of the talk from Mihir Desai:

I will be speaking about legislative and policy changes during the Modi Government affecting rights of people. This will include the new labour codes, farmers laws, laws concerning citizenship, love jihad laws, education policy, AADHAR act, changes in laws affecting NGOs, Environmental laws, laws concerning elections, demonetisation, etc. This will include the erosion of parliamentary democracy and  federal structure. The talk will also include the use of existing and new draconian laws. It will be in the overall context of the present context of the Establishments efforts to suppress all dissent and to hollow out all institutions of accountability.

 Speaker’s Profile: Mihir Desai is a designated Senior Advocate practising in Bombay High Court and Supreme Court of India. He mainly practises human rights law. He is a cofounder of Human Rights Law Network and was Director of India Centre of Human Rights and Law for 10 years. He was also the Editor of Combat Law- a human rights law magazine for the same period. He is presently the National Vice President of Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). He has done litigation on various human rights issues including the Gujarat carnage of 2002, challenging the CAA and NRC in Supreme Court and various issues arising out of NRC in Gawhati High Court, litigation concerning the tool kit concerning farmers movement, issues concerning hate speech, representing number of accused in the Bhima Koregaon ‘urban naxal’ case, challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution concerning Kashmir. He has also been involved in a number of other cases concerning environment, women’s rights, child rights, police brutality and freedom of speech and expression and right to protest. He has been member of number of independent peoples tribunals concerning human rights issues. He was the Legal Counsel for International Tribunal on Kashmir.
