Mission Statement

It is the mission of Public Bank East Bay to provide community oversight and stewardship in the formation and functioning of the Public Bank of the East Bay to base its decisions on the values of:  Equity, Accountability, Social Responsibility and Democracy.

1) Equity  – PBEB is committed to a public bank which acknowledges and attempts restitution of the historical burdens carried by disenfranchised communities, including communities of color and many other marginalized groups.

2) Accountability – The bank is accountable to the residents of the East Bay, who have a right to fully transparent explanations of the Bank’s actions and choices.

3) Social Responsibility – Decisions regarding who gets loans, what projects get invested in, and who benefits should take into account investing our money into the wealth and health of local communities and the environment.

4) Democracy: The bank will be governed using democratic processes which consciously and intentionally adhere to the values/principles listed above.

Moskowitz wrote the renowned bestseller, “How To Kill a City,” which revealed the systemic forces behind the gentrification ruining such major American cities as San Francisco, New York, New Orleans and Detroit. Now, with “The Case Against Free Speech” he exposes the powerful forces and political machinations currently defining free speech, a term that has been defined and redefined to suit those in power, to give them the right to push their agenda. What’s more, our investment in the First Amendment has long obscured an uncomfortable truth: free speech is impossible in an unequal society in which a few corporations joined with the ultra-wealthy can bankroll political movements that disenfranchise millions of voters, while our government routinely silences critics of racism and capitalism.

The RPA’s August movie night will feature “POWER TO HEAL,” which tells a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is the tale of how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country practically overnight. Potluck starts at 6:30, followed by a screening at 7pm and discussion at 8pm.

This day-long symposium will kick off a year of events at UC Berkeley to mark the 400 year anniversary of the beginning of slavery in North America. The events are being co-organized by the Haas Institute, the African American studies and history departments, the African American Student Development Center, and the Black Staff & Faculty Organization.

The symposium will include remarks by Haas Institute Director and African American studies professor john a. powell, plus several panels and performances detailed below.

We’ll be discussing the fundamentals of Pan-Africanism and how it can be used as a revolutionary tool to address the conditions facing African people all over the world.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 4 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we tend to meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months from November to early March after Daylights Savings Time.)

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 3 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.
