The Anti Police-Terror Project is a project of the ONYX ORGANIZING COMMITTEE that in coalition with other organizations, like Idriss Stelley Foundation, Community READY Corps and Workers World Party – Bay Area, is working to develop a replicable and sustainable model to end police terrorism in this country.
We are led by the most impacted communities but are a multi-racial, mutil-generational coalition.

There will be report backs on some of our recent actions including the Defund OPD campaign around the city budget process, including our shutdown of the Council budget meeting. You’ll also hear about our action to protest the promotion of rapist OPD Cops at their “secret” promotions ceremony.
We’d also love to have you get involved with APTP on a regular basis, by joining one of our committees. We will have committee breakouts as part of Wednesday’s meeting, so you can learn about what the different committees do. We know you all have lots of ideas and talent, so please contribute to further APTP’s on-going work.

As many of you may have already heard, people locked up in our county jail in downtown Oakland (Glenn Dyer) are on their 4th day of Hunger Strike. This Hunger strike will span across 2 counties and 4 jails. Santa Rita Jail, Santa Clara County Main Jail and Elmwood D.O.C. will continue the strike in solidarity on October 22.

Informational Meeting
We are excited to launch our bimonthly informational meetings! These meetings will ordinarily be split in two with the first half covering organizational basics, updates, and opportunities to get involved. The second half will cover engagement and education around political issues of local, national, and global relevance.
These meetings are a great way to learn about what our chapter is up to, how it’s structured, and how you can get involved with the projects you would like to be involved in. Whether you just joined DSA, haven’t joined yet, or even if you are a member who has not attended a meeting in a while, this meeting is for you! This month, we will skip the second half of the typical structure since the electoral endorsements informational meeting is currently scheduled separately for October 2, but in the future, informational meetings will encompass both.
Waffles & Zapatismo Classes – The next 2 classes on Zapatismo are scheduled for September 23 and October 21, 2017.
Sept 23rd is the fifth in a series of classes and discussions that include Zapatista history, projects and thinking. This fifth class will focus on the EZLN’s re-emergence on December 21, 2012 and its subsequent re-statement of the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle, the EZLN’s current political analysis.
We’ll also discuss the Escuelitas zapatistas (Little Zapatista Schools), the murder of Compañero Galeano, the “death” of SCI Marcos and his rebirth as SCI Galeano. Classes are free and open to all those interested in learning about the Zapatista movement, which governs its own territory through an anti-capitalist government parallel to that of the Mexican State.

Strike Debt is building a debt resistance movement. We believe that most individual debt is illegitimate and unjust. Most of us fall into debt because we are increasingly deprived of the means to acquire the basic necessities of life: health care, education, and housing. Because we are forced to go into debt simply in order to live, we think it is right and moral to resist it.
- Presenting debt and inequality related topics at forums, workshops and in radio productions
- Promoting single-payer / Medicare for All to end the plague of medical debt
- money bail reform and fighting modern day debtors’ prisons and exploitative ticketing and fining schemes
- Working on debarring US Banks that have been convicted of felonies from municipal contracts, and divesting from the Wall St. banks
- Tiny Homes and other solutions for the homeless.

Strike Debt – Principles of Solidarity
Strike Debt is building a debt resistance movement. We believe that most individual debt is illegitimate and unjust. Most of us fall into debt because we are increasingly deprived of the means to acquire the basic necessities of life: health care, education, and housing. Because we are forced to go into debt simply in order to live, we think it is right and moral to resist it.
We also oppose debt because it is an instrument of exploitation and political domination. Debt is used to discipline us, deepen existing inequalities, and reinforce racial, gendered, and other social hierarchies. Every Strike Debt action is designed to weaken the institutions that seek to divide us and benefit from our division. As an alternative to this predatory system, Strike Debt advocates a just and sustainable economy, based on mutual aid, common goods, and public affluence.
Strike Debt is committed to the principles and tactics of political autonomy, direct democracy, direct action, creative openness, a culture of solidarity, and commitment to anti-oppressive language and conduct. We struggle for a world without racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of oppression.
Strike Debt holds that we are all debtors, whether or not we have personal loan agreements. Through the manipulation of sovereign and municipal debt, the costs of speculator-driven crises are passed on to all of us. Though different kinds of debt can affect the same household, they are all interconnected, and so all household debtors have a common interest in resisting.
Strike Debt engages in public education about the debt-system to counteract the self-serving myth that finance is too complicated for laypersons to understand. In particular, it urges direct action as a way of stopping the damage caused by the creditor class and their enablers among elected government officials. Direct action empowers those who participate in challenging the debt-system.
Strike Debt holds that we owe the financial institutions nothing, whereas, to our friends, families and communities, we owe everything. In pursuing a long-term strategy for national organizing around this principle, we pledge international solidarity with the growing global movement against debt and austerity.
The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months, once Daylight Savings Time springs forward we tend to assemble at 4 PM).
On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.
OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.
At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Join us at the Finnish Hall for our next General Assembly! Doors open at 7PM; we’ll start promptly at 7:30PM. We’ll have updates from our teams, an invited speaker, and community event announcements, followed by team breakouts and discussions.
This GA will include a focus on women’s issues and possibly gender issues as well, in part to commemorate the First Inaugural Women’s Convention in Detroit, which is being organized by the Women’s March planners. This week has also developed into #MeToo week, highlighting sexual harassment as a national issue.
Our guest speakers will be students from BHS Stop Harassing, a group of Berkeley High School students who are working to change the culture surrounding sexual harassment and violence at BHS and beyond. They want Berkeley High to be a model high school where all students feel safe and respected. They seek to spur district administrators and school decision-makers to immediately address shortcomings in the school environment that impede student success insofar as those factors create an unsafe learning environment.
Join Oakland Privacy to organize against the surveillance state, police militarization and ICE, and to advocate for surveillance regulation around the Bay.
We fight against “pre-crime” and “thought-crime,” spy drones, facial recognition, police body cameras and requirements for “backdoors” to cellphones, to list just a few invasions of our privacy by all levels of Government.
We draft and push for privacy legislation for City Councils, at the County level, and in Sacramento. We advocate in op-eds and in the streets. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and believe no one is illegal.
Oakland Privacy originally came together in 2013 to fight against the Domain Awareness Center, Oakland’s citywide networked mass surveillance hub. OP was instrumental in stopping the DAC from becoming a city-wide spying network.

Over the past 10 months of the Trump administration, we’ve seen a barrage of right-wing atrocities and social suffering from the far-right carnival of hate in Charlottesville, to the unnatural disasters of Harvey and Irma, to Trumps nuclear saber-rattling with North Korea, to the Trump administration ending DACA protections.
At the root of the crimes and outrages of this era are the priorities of a capitalist system controlled by a small elite of the wealthiest and most powerful people.
There are struggles for change in many different corners of society, each with their own histories and dynamics. But waging them most effectively requires an understanding of how they are connected and dependent on each other and how, together, they can contribute to a broader struggle to change the rules of the game for good.
We need to build a left-wing resistance that doesn’t let the right go unopposed. We need to protest the reactionaries wherever they appear, and not go along with the liberal advice to ignore them and they will go away because they won’t. We need to claim the right of free speech for ourselves to make our opposition heard.
But we need something else as well: a left that puts forward a political alternative to the rights scapegoating and hate. This is the case for joining the struggle for socialism today. The disasters of capitalism are as numerous and obvious as they have ever beenand so is the need to do something now to achieve a socialist future.
The Bay Area Marxism Conference will draw together hundreds of socialists and activists from the Bay Area for workshops on Marxist theory, history and practice and discussions about how to use those politics to build an urgently needed socialist movement today.
