In her journal Octavia E. Butler wrote “All good things must begin.” Abolitionist alternatives to police must begin somewhere, but alternatives can only be sustained when individuals like you come together to build them together.
Mental Health First (MH First) is a project of APTP and Oakland’s first and only non-police, non 9-1-1 crisis response line for mental health crises, including but not limited to psychiatric emergencies, substance use support and intimate partner violence safety planning. We are currently dispatching on a case-by-case basis, and have volunteers on the hotline Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 2am.
We have an MH First volunteer training coming up open to all community members who want to join our team.
Register to join our next virtual MH First training!
The Anti Police-Terror Project is a Black-led, multi-racial, intergenerational coalition that seeks to build a replicable and sustainable model to eradicate police terror in communities of color. In addition to our MH First services, we support families surviving police terror in their fight for justice, documenting police abuses and connecting impacted families and community members with resources, legal referrals, and opportunities for healing.
Register to join this incredible crew!
Starting: Mondays, October 9TH @ 4-6PM ET (ONLINE) This class is co-organized by Democracy at Work.
This 4-Week seminar led by Richard Wolff, will begin with an introduction and brief history of world socialism from its 18th-century beginnings to today. We will examine the different kinds of socialism (Soviet, social democracy, democratic socialism, Cuban socialism, socialism with Chinese characteristics, and worker-coop socialism) and likewise examine the differences among socialism, communism, anarchism, and so on. Finally, we will examine critiques of socialism. Throughout, we will be sensitive to different interpretations of socialism and distinguish between socialism as a critical movement within capitalism (how it began) and socialism as an alternative system (how it evolved).
The dates for each of the four sessions are on Mondays: Oct 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th. Online Zoom information will be sent through email upon registration.

Why do we do mass copwatching shifts?
This is a chance for us to teach our shifts practice: listening to the scanner, how to copwatch as a team, incident documentation, entry into our database, and more.
We hope that people will take what they learn into their daily lives AND join copwatch for some of our weekly shifts! We are always seeking to train up more shift facilitators.
Wanna know more about our shifts? Check out the copwatch handbook packed with 30+ years of experience. (https://www.berkeleycopwatch.org/handbook)

Earlier this year the Anti Police-Terror Project proudly launched The People’s Clinic with scheduling options every 1st and 3rd Friday at The People’s House in West Oakland. We created The People’s Clinic as an abolitionist healing space for communities affected by police terror and state violence, frontline organizers, and our West Oakland neighbors. We offer free services for community like acupuncture, herbal consultations, massage, healing tools library, monthly workshops, and more.
Our Healing Justice framework invites community to envision and manifest a life beyond the violence we survive everyday. Without healing there is no justice. Sign up today to join us for free healing services this Friday!
Our Clinic draws upon the revolutionary history of the Young Lords and seeks to honor the legacy of Dr. Mutulu Shakur. Ancestral medicine is one of the greatest strengths that our movement has to combat state violence, and it is a central value of APTP to utilize healing justice as a strategy for the longevity of organized resistance.

Hardware hack night – each Tuesday, we welcome sudoers new and old to bring their hardware projects to the space, or simply come by to learn and tinker! All welcome, 7pm til… whomever’s left standing!
Special Workshop Presentation and Explorations: XR in Art
What fine arts are doing with virtual reality / augmented reality and XR in general, and how can we make exhibits and virtual reality Art at SudoRoom and Beyond? We’ll be looking especially closely at the Venice Biennial Immersive and the Cannes XR Virtual Festival.
Also, how can you mix virtual reality with hardware? We have seen projects where people 3D print mountains or sculptures of maps.
Project Ideas
If we force you to watch a presentation, you’d better believe we’ll offer a workshop:
- Could we print a 3D printed map of Oakland or even make it out of paper machine and do light projection animations on it without having to use a headset?
- If we do have a VisionPro or Quest, could we use that to look at a 3D object?
- How can we make #webxr exhibits of our wonderful space and show off our projects? we already. have some throw-up explorations here https://fancy-charming-physician.glitch.me/

EFF Senior Staff Attorney Kit Walsh will join us this month to discuss the potential risks of AI being used to automate discrimination. AI might seem like a helpful tool for processing applications, or informing people about opportunities, but the black box nature of these algorithms can result in systems with difficult to detect bias among protected classes. Kit will review EFF’s analysis of this problem and discuss our approach to policy remedies, before opening up to a discussion for EFA members.

It’s almost election day! But our work doesn’t end with voting. EFF organizers José and Chris will facilitate a workshop on how local advocates can put together a plan for getting the attention of newly elected officials, and engaging them on Digital Rights issues. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and personal experiences for discussion.
