#SaveTheAmazon: Action at Brazilian Consulate in Solidarity w/ Amazon’s Indigenous Peoples @ Brazilian Consulate
Aug 30 @ 9:00 am – 11:30 am
Who: Everyone is welcome and desperately needed!

The Amazon = LIFE & Capitalism = DEATH

It’s time for our August action!! EVERYONE is welcome!

The Amazon is burning at an unprecedented speed. Ranchers and cattle farmers are burning territory clearing it and creating pastures for cattle, and big agriculture to take over and buy their property. If a section of the rainforest is burned to the ground, it is then open for takeover. Indigenous people, animals, plants, everything is losing their homes and lives in this historic decimation of the lungs of our planet.

President Jair Bolsonaro initially blamed environmentalists for the fires, and later announced the country didn’t have any money to fight the fires. The devastation is nearly beyond comprehension and the consequences on the entire planet are unimaginable.

As many of you following Brasil issues have probably noticed, there has been a very public escalation of violence, murders and intimidation of indigenous people and villages in the last couple of months. Uncontacted tribes are being photographed, and witnessing the outside world, deforestation of the Brasilian Amazon is at unprecedented high, leaders are being murdered and the government is lying to the world about all of this and we must take action.

This action is standing in solidarity with all Indigenous people and territories in the Brasilian Amazon. We are doing a call out to the Bay Area and Northern California native people from all up and down the Americas, and all people here, to come and stand.

Not One More Drop of Indigenous Blood!

We talk about the Condor ~ Eagle prophecy so frequently and this is part of fulfilling the prophecy. Standing together as indigenous people is where our strength comes from. This is a call out for all native people to bring us your songs, to brings us your dances, to please come and lay down your prayers for your relatives fighting for their lives in Brasil. This will be an action of prayer offerings from the North to the South. We all have our many traditional clothes, songs and offerings for prayer and we are asking you to bring yours on behalf of indigenous people being murdered and violently intimidated in Brasil. The Amazon is being cared for by our relatives there and we stand with them, in their defense.

We will be blocking off the street in front of the Brasilian Consulate again, and again will be doing a street mural. We will have many signs again, puppets and music. This action is all about prayer so please only bring prayer and love. We invite you to bring flowers to offer. Please bring your hearts ready to have a powerful action of prayer for all we hold dear. Everyone is welcome and desperately needed.

Let us fill that space with people, let us fill the air with songs, let us flood the street with prayer and let it be heard in Brasil that the Eagle ~ Condor prophecy is real and we are standing solidly in the knowledge that we are making it come true.

PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to come and offer your traditional song and/or dance prayers PLEASE MESSAGE THE PAGE OR EMAIL US AT BrasilSolidaritySFBay [at] Protonmail.com

What Happened to Dujuan? Premiere Screening and Panel @ First Unitarian Church of Oakland
Aug 30 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Join us for a benefit film showing and panel.
This fast-paced powerful documentary follows Barbara Doss’ search to discover the details of her son Dujuan Armstrong’s death in Santa Rita Jail. In June, 2018,23-year-old Dujuan Armstrong died while serving weekends for a 2014 burglary conviction. Thus began Barbara’s journey for truth and justice. The film documents her determined and courageous quest to find out what happened to her son. In her pursuit for justice she quickly runs into the resistance of the Gregory Ahern’s Sheriff’s Department and begins to learn of the opaque and powerful position of American sheriffs. The audience travels with her to the Board of Supervisors, the jail, the cemetery where Dujuan is buried, and one climatic confrontation with the sheriff himself.
Lucas Guilkey is a video journalist based in Oakland. His work focuses on important social issues from mass incarceration to climate change, and from budget cuts to reproductive healthcare. He is working on a feature documentary about what is the largest prisoner hunger strike in U.S. history, which took place in California in 2011 and 2013.
After the film there will be a panel with the filmaker Luca Guilkey and members of the Audit Ahern Coalition. Learn about what is happening in the local county jail, and what you can do to change it.
This is a benefit for the Audit Ahern Coalition and the family of Dujuan Armstrong. Donations will be accepted on a sliding scale, all are welcome.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. join us for desserts and refreshments.
Film starts promptly at 7:45.
This event is sponsored by The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, The Audit Ahern Coalition and the Ella Baker Partnership Team at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland.

City of Oakland says not so fast to sale of half the Coliseum site to the A’s

Phil Matier Aug. 4, 2019 Updated: Aug. 4, 2019 6:43 a.m.
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/philmatier/article/City-of-Oakland-says-not-so-fast-to-sale-of-half-14277040.php

The phone lines are burning up in the East Bay over a move by the Oakland City Council that could throw a wrench into the deal for the Oakland A’s new waterfront ballpark.

At issue is Alameda County’s half share of the 155 acre Oakland-Alameda Coliseum site, which it plans to sell to the A’s for $85 million.

The city of Oakland owns the other half and would retain its share in the site. But some City Council members say the county should sell its share to the city, even though it’s unclear if the city has the money to buy out the county.

The A’s have said that the revenues earned from developing the Coliseum site, where the team now plays, is a key component to financing the ballpark at the Port of Oakland’s Howard Terminal.

Nonetheless, sources said the Oakland City Council instructed the city attorney in a closed meeting before going on summer break to draft a letter to the county opposing the sale and raising the possibility of a legal challenge if the deal goes through.

To date however, no letter has been sent.

“I think they are rattling their sabers,” said Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty.

Oakland council members we spoke with confirmed having voted to send the letter, but declined to comment publicly because the matter is still under discussion.

Oakland Port Privatization Scam By Billionaire John Fisher, Demos & Union Bureaucrats
https://youtu.be/1hu_s7A4Yc8

Bay Area ILWU Local 10 and Local 34 longshore workers held a press conference on June 13, 2019 to protest the privatization of the Port Of Oakland Howard Terminal for billionaire A’s owner John Fisher’s new stadium.

ILWU 10 former Secretary Treasurer Clarence Thomas and ILWU Local 34 president Keith Shanklin talked about the threat to not only union maritime jobs but the gentrification of West Oakland by the planned 4,000 condos for more than $1 million each.
They also attacked East Bay Democrats Rob Bonta and CA Senator Nancy Skinner for their “fast track” bills that would override zoning and health and safety protections for the A’s owner John Fisher. Fisher and his family including Doris Fisher also run the union busting charter chains Rocketship and KIPP which are siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars from public schools in Oakland and througout the state and country.

ILWU also challenged the role of the Alameda Labor Council leadership and that union bureaucrats who are pushing the stadium regardless of the fact that it would destroy the unionized jobs in the port of Oakland of all maritime workers who work at the port.

The Port of Oakland is the 3rd largest port on the West Coast and shippers would be driven out of the Port if this gentrifcation and stadium in built on the bay port property of Howard Terminal. The terminal is used by truckers and also to train longshore workers in the port.

The Oakland City council voted unanimously to support Bonta and Skinner’s bills to “fast track” the privatization of the port and the building of Fisher’s stadium and 4,000 $1 million dollar condos.

Fascists Out of Berkeley! @ People's Park
Sep 1 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Amber Cummings, a known fascist organizer is planning a rally, “No to Marxism in America” in Berkeley, CA on September 1st at Sproul Plaza. It is critical that the people of the greater Bay Area show up to resist their hateful actions and rhetoric. The ideology and presence of fascist forces are on the rise not only in the United States but around the globe.

Domestically, the U.S. government is carrying out the imprisonment of tens of thousands of Latin American migrants and refugees at the southern border who are escaping war and terror in their countries created by the imperialist policies of the United States. In the Bay Area alone there are over 55,000 homeless people living on the streets. We will mobilize against the fascists and we will not forget the daily oppression of working people.

This is the environment that allows fascism to develop.

Our plan is to meet at People’s Park (2556 Haste) at 10AM. We will rally there and march to Sproul Plaza at noon.

Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Sep 1 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

NOTE: During the Plague Year of 2020 GA will be held every week or two on Zoom. To find out the exact time a date get on the Occupy Oakland email list my sending an email to:

occupyoakland-subscribe@lists.riseup.net

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 4 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall. If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph. If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 4:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. (Note: we tend to meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months from November to early March after Daylights Savings Time.)

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 3 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over six years, since October 2011! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

Labor Day Rally for Healthcare Justice at Kaiser
Sep 2 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

Thousands of SEIU-UHW members across the state are publicly rejecting Kaiser’s greed and hypocrisy this Labor Day — protesting against Kaiser’s unfair labor practices and demanding a new contract that protects our futures, families, and patients.

Kaiser is making record profits and gave the CEO a 60% raise to $16 million a year. But when it comes to us, the healthcare workers who help patients thrive, Kaiser is bargaining in bad faith and demanding unprecedented cuts in our next contract.

RSVP to commit to rallying with SEIU-UHW members statewide to win a contract that protects our jobs, wages, and benefits from Kaiser’s corporate greed.
