East Bay DSA General Meeting @ Oakland Peace Center
Apr 23 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

We are excited to announce our next General Membership Meeting! Mark you calendars.

We’ll be learning about what the organization has been up to, how to get involved in the different working committees, voting on the chapter’s new bylaws, and ending with a mixer and break-out groups.

Since we will be voting on the chapter’s bylaws, this is a very important meeting to come to. We would like all of our members to come and make their voices heard.

Check out the Facebook event page, and stay tuned for updates. As we develop the draft bylaws, we will be sending out more information and looking forward to your feedback.

We’ll have lots of opportunities for members to help with registration, set-up, clean up, printing of materials, and all manner of prep work and day-of roles. This is a GREAT WAY to get a little more involved if you’ve been checking things out from the sidelines. List of volunteer roles coming soon—email events@eastbaydsa.org if you’re interested in getting involved!

Occupy Oakland General Assembly @ Oscar Grant Plaza
Apr 23 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly meets every Sunday at 3 PM at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater at 14th Street & Broadway near the steps of City Hall.  If for some reason the amphitheater is being used otherwise and/or OGP itself is inaccessible, we will meet at Kaiser Park, right next to the statues, on 19th St. between San Pablo and Telegraph.  If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.  (Note: we meet at 3:00 PM during the cooler months,  once Daylight Savings Time springs forward we tend to assemble at 4 PM).

On every ‘last Sunday’ we meet a little earlier at 2 PM to have a community potluck to which all are welcome.

ooGAOO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for over five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally. Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. We encourage everyone participating in the Occupy Oakland GA to be part of at least one associated group, but it is by no means a requirement. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

General Assembly Standard Agenda

  1. Welcome & Introductions
  2. Reports from Committees, Caucuses, & Independent Organizations
  3. Announcements
  4. (Optional) Discussion Topic

The Oakland Greens Present: A movie night fund raiser: “American/Sandinista” @ It’s Your Move Games & Hobbies
Apr 23 @ 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Plan a fun evening out for “Dinner and a Movie” to benefit the Oakland Greens.  Note that we are coming up to the 38th anniversary of the Sandinista Popular Revolution and April 28th will be the 30th anniversary of Ben Linder’s assassination. The movie is called “American/Sandinista” (2008) by local film maker Jason Blalock, and is a retrospective of Linder’s project twenty years after he was killed by the Contras.

Your speaker Don Macleay is featured in the film because he was the project director up until a month before Ben was assassinated.   Macleay will also be traveling to Nicaragua on the 26th to participate in the 30th anniversary in San Jose de Bocay, the town near where Linder was killed and where a hydroelectric plant bearing his name was subsequently built on the stream that he was investigating.

Join us for discussion with people who during the 1980s were there on the ground.  Doors will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will start at 6:30 p.m.  The movie will start at 7:30 p.m.  $20 is a suggested donation, but no donation is too big or small, and as always no one will be turned away for lack of funds. This is a family-friendly event and is wheel chair accessible.

Oakland Greens funds are used to print literature, help with publishing the Alameda County Green Voter Guide, and produce direct community actions with a focus on mobilizing youth to become social justice warriors/candidates/activists.

Sunflower Alliance is a partner of Green Film Fest and is proud to be co-sponsoring an exciting new documentary, RISE: Standing Rock (Michelle Latimer, Canada, 2016, 110 min).  This is part of a Viceland docuseries which examines contemporary indigenous life and gives viewers a rare glimpse into the front line of indigenous-led resistance. This program includes two episodes: Sacred Water: Standing Rock, Part I and Red Power: Standing Rock, Part II.

The film, a winner of the 2017 Best Feature Award, documents the pan-tribal resistance at Standing Rock to the Dakota Access Pipeline.  The powerful alliance of women that rose up in the face of brutal police power brings inspiration and hope to all struggling people.  Mni wiconi—water is life!

Friends of the Public Bank of Oakland Organizers’ Meeting @ Greenlining Institute Building
Apr 24 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

The feasibility study proposal submitted by Global Investment Company and endorsed by The Friends of the Public Bank of Oakland was selected by Oakland city administrators. However, at Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting, the recommendation from city staff will be to postpone funding until the 2017-2019 budget cycle.

It’s critical that the Oakland City Council Finance Committee vote to allocate money for a feasibility study for the Public Bank of Oakland now. Postponing funding the study only further delays the creation of the bank.

Please call the members of the Finance Committee before Tuesday morning’s meeting ask them to Vote YES on Agenda Item #7:

  • Noel Gallo (510-238-7005)
  • Abel Guillen (510-238-7002)
  • Dan Kalb (510-238-7001)
  • Annie Campbell Washington (510-238-7004)

OccupyForum Film in Celebration of Earth Day: A Fierce Green Fire by Mark Kitchell @ The Black and Brown Social Club
Apr 24 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Information, discussion & community! Monday Night Forum!!

Occupy Forum is an opportunity for open and respectful dialogue
on all sides of these critically important issues!

This past Saturday was Earth Day with worldwide demonstrations such at Saturday’s March For Science, where tens of thousands took to the streets of San Francisco to tell the Trump regime that science and facts are more important than personal hunches and short term profits for fossil fuel investments. There probably has never been a time when we needed greater awareness of our natural world and the peril it’s in than now. Virtually all climate scientists agree that life on our planet is under dire threat from global warming and climate chaos, and that the time to take action was yesterday, but that if we engage in large-scale programs of conservation and remediation, we may stave off the worst effects of this crisis.

It’s against this backdrop that the new US administration proceeds with its agenda to dramatically cut back on the budgets of the EPA and most other environmental programs which would have reduced carbon emissions. It is also aggressively cutting regulations of the fossil fuel industry to greatly increase their extraction and burning. An argument could be made that this approach is not only about short term greed but may even have a suicidal, apocalyptic aspect – the Trump administration is full of zealots.

Awareness of how people have fought against giant corporations and government agencies which threatened our well-being, and that of the planet, could be very helpful now as we plan our paths of resistance against these insane, fossil-fuel addicts. That’s where this film comes in! Inspired by the book of the same name by Philip Shabecoff, and informed by advisors like Edward O. Wilson, A FIERCE GREEN FIRE chronicles the largest movement of the 20th century and one of the keys to the 21st. It brings together all the major parts of environmentalism and connects them. It focuses on activism, people fighting to save their homes, their lives, the future – and succeeding against all odds.
<

The film unfolds in five acts, each with a central story and character:

  • 1
  • . David Brower and the Sierra Club’s battle to halt dams in the Grand Canyon
  • 2
  • . Lois Gibbs and Love Canal residents’ struggle against 20,000 tons of toxic chemicals
  • 3
  • . Paul Watson and Greenpeace’s campaigns to save whales and baby harp seals
  • 4
  • . Chico Mendes and Brazilian rubbertappers’ fight to save the Amazon rainforest
  • 5
  • . Bill McKibben and the 25-year effort to address the impossible issue – climate change

Surrounding these main stories are strands like environmental justice, going back to the land, and movements of the global south such as Chipko in India and Wangari Maathai in Kenya. Vivid archival film brings it all back and insightful interviews shed light on the events and what they mean. The film, which is directed by Mark Kitchell,
(husband of Occupy Forum’s own Ruthie Sakheim) offers a deeper view of environmentalism as civilizational change, bringing our industrial society into sustainable balance with nature.

Time will be allotted for Q&A, discussion and announcements.

Funding for a Public Bank Study: Oakland City Council Finance Cmte

Stop Urban Shield: All Out to Berkeley City Council @ Berkeley Old City Hall
Apr 25 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Tuesday 4/25: All Out to Berkeley City Council

In an unprecedented move, the Berkeley City Council is considering fully withdrawing their  participation in Urban Shield. A decision in favor of pulling out of Urban Shield by the Berkeley City Council paves the way for other cities in the Bay Area to do the same. Join us on Tuesday to show mass opposition to Urban Shield’s war on our communities.

Can’t attend on Tuesday? Support with CALL IN DAY: Monday, April 24th,.
Call Berkeley City Council and demand that they end police militarization. Here is sample call in language and contact info:

“Dear Councilperson _________,
I am writing to urge you and all Berkeley City Council members to take leadership in putting an end to Berkeley’s engagement with the militarization of police and disaster preparedness represented by the annual Urban Shield exercises and weapons expo, funded by DHS through the Urban Areas Security Initiative. Urban Shield’s emphasis on SWAT teams as the response to emergencies – including natural disasters – as well as the extremely militarized scenarios, diminishes resources for responding to the ordinary emergencies community members face every day. Berkeley should not be participating in war games funded by the Department of Homeland Security, which involve not only nine Bay Area counties, but teams from around the United States. That is why I ask you to exercise your leadership and reject any future funding from UASI, Berkeley’s participation in Urban Shield, and to stand with Alameda County communities, and people across the country.
Regards,
_______”
