OO Tactics
I lived in Seattle during the WTO protests. There too a percentage of attendees were interested in mayhem rather than issues, particularly, by vandalizing the property of people and businesses that had nothing to do with the WTO. I think that it is inevitable that troublemakers will show up. Whether that is entirely bad or good I won’t say. Let me change direction for a moment. To effect change, OO needs a carrot or a stick to go with its demands. So far OO has gained national attention, by making … Continued
Demands: Corruption, Citizens United
Occupy Oakland should demand that Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate -pass a law to counteract the Citizen’s United ruling, -bar corporations, foreign powers, and non-citizens from contributing any money to politicians & campaigns, and -cap at $1,000* (periodically adjusted for inflation) the amount of money a citizen may contribute to an election, politician, or PAC (* or pick another number) I am concerned particularly that corruption forms an barrier to addressing all other important issues with the public good in mind. I believe this is the most important, … Continued
Demands: Bank Regulation
Occupy Oakland should demand -that Obama, Boxer, Feinstein and the Representatives pledge to repeal the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999 and reinstate the restrictions on the integration of banking, insurance, and stock trading imposed by the Glass-Steagall Act as soon as the Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Presidency. -that the Congress (Dems and Reps) take steps to make all banks and insurance companies “small enough to fail” -that the President seek to criminally prosecute highly paid employees of the banks and brokerages involved … Continued
Demand: Resignations
In July I finally watched “Inside Job”. It has to be said that the ending made the President look foolish, or worse, especially in his selection of the following to be part of the administration: Timothy Geitner William Dudley Mark Petterson Lewis Sachs Gary Gensler Mary Schapiro Rahm Emanuel Martin Feldstein Laura Tyson Larry Summers Ben Bernanke One concrete demand that Occupy Oakland should make is that any of these men and women still in the federal government should be asked to resign. As an aside, I will … Continued
Demands and Consequences
I don’t think the movement will have any success unless it is willing to refrain from voting for President Obama, Senators Boxer and Feinstein, and various Democratic Representatives. The group ought to back up its concrete demands by splitting the vote. The President will not give California a second thought unless he sees a drop in campaign contributions and fears that our votes will not be his. I’ll write in someone more progressive, liberal, less obviously corrupt, or dead. I support that movement & am a part of the 99%. … Continued
List of OO Demands?
The group has the attention of the media. Is there a place on the website where I can find a list of the group’s demands? I’m not hearing any specifics on the news. Cheers, Mike 18321
