I understand that at tonight’s GA there are proposals around diversity of tactics etc.
I suggest that rather than the usual GA vote, we should seize this opportunity to engage the wider Oakland community in a dialogue, and hold a community-wide plebiscite/encuentros in the streets on tactics/nonviolence/etc. We could take whatever proposal(s) around tactics that were gonna be brought to the GA, and we could frame it as a community survey. Then we could gather opinions on the survey from throughout Oakland. We could agree that once we got to a certain threshhold of responses–say, 10,000–we would tally the results and that would dictate Occupy Oakland’s course.
This is a historic opportunity to change how we make such critical decisions that impact the movement beyond the camp. This could also help take Occupy Oakland to the next level in terms of community engagement and dialogue.
cheers =)

The next revolution in human civilization–if we are to survive–must be one not of material technology but of social technology: a revolution in how we organize our selves, our communities, our institutions. We need a new form of social organization that honors and enhances the wisdom of all who participate, regardless of status, station, or creed. Many before us have conceived it. Our task today is to build it.
I agree with David. The strike was an awesome display of solidarity until the violence occurred. Then the movement lost credibility and supporters. Violence is foolish and reinforces the right wing messages against meaningful change.
The general public has never heard of something as stupid as “diversity of tactics.” They are going to tell you what I’ve been telling people for weeks — vandalism and violence are not acceptable.
