Teachers, Peace, and Respect – Teachers should be in the classroom tomorrow

Categories: Open Mic

I support the general strike on Wed. Nov. 2, and here are 3 items I wish the organizers and supporters would agree on and publicize:

#1 – I believe the schools should be an integral part by having the teachers in the classrooms, not in the plaza. Who better to explain to their students how important this is, and to tell them “there are people out there today who are fighting for all of us, and we can all do our part by learning.”   Substitutes could be the ones out there marching.

#2 – I believe it should be 100% peaceful on the part of the demonstrators. It should be made clear by the organizers that violence will not be tolerated. Anyone gets violent, they should be surrounded by those nearby and shuffled away from the group. Without a word. Silence is powerful.

#3 – I believe the movement should not make, endorse or publicize sweeping statements such “Keep the police off our streets.”   That makes no sense in our society. What we need to do is work together WITH the police.  Mutual respect: it will happen if we want it enough.
