You’ll should ask the police for help. Sounds crazy but you should try it and at least ask publicly. Someone is going out of thier way to make you guys and the movement look bad. Fight fire with fire. use the very media that is used against you. ASk the police for help publicly.
I so agree with the theory that these people are being paid. Can’t prove it, but something ain’t right here.
occupy oakland had better do something about the violence. Second time around no one will want to hear excuses or that you condemn violence. This will not only destroy your part of the world it will disparage the movement all over the country. I am in Florida and feeling the blow back. The movement must appear, must BE non violent and non partisan. Make no mistake if you can’t control the violence in your own protests its the same as being violent yourselves. It taints us all.

Again, Margaret — we CANNOT form any tactics of how to deal with black bloc until the Oakland GA makes it clear that violence and vandalism are not sanctioned by Occupy Oakland. In the absence of that agreement, all discussion of tactical defense is seen as divisive.
And, just as an aside to the OP — we cannot adopt tactics to defeat black bloc violence and vandalism, until the GA states that we do not condone violence and vandalism. Simple as that. At this point, I am starting to consider Occupy Oakland to be a violent movement. And if I am thinking that, I know damn well that all our opponents are thinking that. For the good of OWS as a whole, OO needs to put itself in check immediately.
Read the local section of the Chronicle today. OPD has cancelled all training sessions for next week. They are preparing another raid. Jean Quan will authorize this raid unless the Oakland GA approves a strong resolution against vandalism and violence. Most citizens of Oakland who marked in the last few weeks will not march to support Occupy Oakland if OO does not clearly define itself as a non-violent movement. The end of OO is upon us if we do not act probably tonight or by Friday.
In Canada and in Rome it was trade unionists who stood up to these people. We now have many veterans who also might be willing to help. It is utterly unfair to leave over-extended committed pacifists who have already made themselves vulnerable by camping and speaking out, to deal with this alone.
We can’t eliminate the possibility that they are saboteurs paid to undermine the movement. It may sound paranoid, but this would be in classic Koch Brothers style to pull such a maneuver.
They must be stopped before they kill this whole thing.
Agreed. They are not on our side. They have their own agenda which is not aligned with the OWS movement.
They have already undermined our credibility. We can’t let them destroy us.
Honestly, I don’t think we can be pacifists with the Black Bloc.. We need to stop them in their tracks. Swarm them as a group. Detain them.. Identify them. They are not on our side. They are against us.
Thank you for the link revealing under cover cops unmasked as provocateurs!!!! I’m not sure if those who surrounded and exposed them could be called pacifists but whatever they did was effective. This should be required viewing for anyone arguing that “black bloc” tactics are anti-police.
