“From the folks who brought you the West Coast Port Shutdown.”

This week’s meeting is tentatively scheduled for the amphitheater at Oscar Grant Plaza, directly in front of City Hall. PLEASE CHECK BACK BECAUSE THIS LOCATION COULD VERY WELL CHANGE!

Topics will likely include planning for the next Port Workers Assembly, a future Mi Pueblo action, a discussion of what we might do for December 12th, the one year anniversary of the West Coast Port Shutdown, along with possibly ILWU, SEIU, Airport workers, United Food Workers, Walmart and other labor activity updates.

Justice 4 Alan Blueford Coalition Meeting @ Siegel & Yee
Nov 3 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The meeting location for this week is Siegel & Yee, in City Center (the little shopping center on Broadway between 14th and 12th). It’s basically behind (on the back side) of the row of shops that includes Radio Shack. From City Hall, cross
the street at the crosswalk and just keep walking in the space between the two large buildings. The Siegel & Yee building is diagonally to the left, up a few steps.

There will be somebody to let people in at the beginning of the meeting or a phone number you can call to have somebody let you in.

—–

We are now meeting weekly. After the release of the (redacted) police report, the (whitewashed) DA’s report and its pronouncement that Masso was justified in gunning Alan down, and our press conference denouncing same, we will be planning further steps in our search for Justice 4 Alan Blueford. Come help us out!

We are organizing a large march for November 10th, 2012 with an emphasis on opposition to Racial Profiling, particularly Oakland’s de facto Stop & Frisk policy — which led directly to Alan’s death — and the repeal of the Police Officers’ Bill of Rights, a California law which protects Officer Masso from investigation unlike ordinary citizens.

We are expecting a large turnout and we need all the help we can get with outreach and logistics. And we need people to help plan further actions!

The People’s Bailout and the Strike Debt Initiative. @ Niebyl-Proctor Library
Nov 16 @ 1:00 am – 2:00 am

This project aims to leverage the debt collection system as a tool for direct action and mutual aid. We buy defaulted debt for pennies on the dollar, just as debt collectors would, but instead of attempting to collect it, we abolish it. For every dollar of defaulted debt we buy, $20 of debt will be abolished. This program launches on Thursday November 15th with a live “telethon” event in NYC – The People’s Bailout – where the goal is to raise $50,000, every penny of which will go toward abolishing $1,000,000 of defaulted medical debt. (In general, you cannot buy the debt of individuals. Rather, you have to buy categories of debt either by geography–folks in a given zip code, for example–or by category–medical debt, credit card debt, etc.)

After we have purchased and successfully abolished this $1,000,000 worth of debt, those whose debt was abolished will be notified with a letter that explains:

(1) That their debt has been abolished, and how that was done
(2) How to contact credit agencies to make sure the debt cancellation is reflected in their credit score
(3) How they can pay some of the jubilee forward, to abolish others also in debt. This is the “rolling” aspect of the jubilee.

NEXT STEPS/HOW TO HELP:
‘Like’ the StrikeDebt Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Strike-Debt/244850825627699

Share the Rolling Jubilee event page: http://www.facebook.com/events/394920527248194/

Follow @StrikeDebt on Twitter (we’re almost at 1,000 followers!)

Consider loaning your twitter or FB account to for a once-a-day blast: http://donateyouraccount.com/StrikeDebt (choose ‘Gold’ level)

Once you’ve done that, make some buzz! Try to post a few times a day about the Jubilee. Every single post counts. Here are some sample posts: http://bit.ly/RJSampleTweets. Feel free to copy and paste, or customize to your own liking. Just make sure to include the website www.rollingjubilee.org, and the hashtags #PeoplesBailout and #RollingJubilee, if you can.

Email your friends and ask them to do all of the above, too. Here are some articles you can use to get the conversation going:

The telethon starts at 8pm eastern time, so 5pm here. It will be streaming live on the internet, (probably on rollingjubilee.org)

**Also, here in Oakland I’m hoping going to host a livestream event at the Holdout Niebel-Proctor Library on the night of the telethon. We’d watch the telethon, and I have a box of Debt Resistors Operations Manuals to distribute, so we can start talking about debt as a broad platform for resistance and direct action, and maybe get a Strike Debt working group going. Please contact me if you’d like to help organize this event!

STAY TUNE FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A LIVESTREAM PARTY!!

TIMELINE:
November 8th: Donation site goes up, promotional video is released, other announcements. We hope to use this day to test and build up our network. We will put up a site for our people to use to send targeted tweets to various celebrities during this time.

November 12th? New York Times article will be published around this day. Then the press embargo will be lifted.

November 15th: The telethon! Massive simultaneous twitter campaign to promote the live stream and our ongoing donation successes.

MEETING LOCATION HAS CHANGED FROM SEIU 1021 TO SIEGEL & YEE!!

Directions: From City Hall cross the street at the 14th St. crosswalk, keep going back between the two big buildings towards the walking mall. To the diagonal left and up a few steps is the building. If there’s no one outside there should be a phone number taped to the door of someone to call.

JAB visits the Oakland City Council Public Safety Committee Mtg @ Oakland City Hall, Sgt. Mark Dunakin Room - 1st Floor
Nov 28 @ 2:00 am – 3:30 am

The City Council Public Safety Committee will be taking a report from the police on their hiring practices (e.g., as to why they hire people like Officer Masso who, before he killed Alan Blueford, tortured a prisoner in NY and then refused to call for medical aid), and also taking another report on what police standards are when dealing with the family of a victim of an officer-involved shooting (e.g., do you keep the family sitting around for hours and then misidentify the victim, as happened to the Bluefords?).

Come join us in witness and in support of Justice 4 Alan Blueford.

The Fight For Affordable Housing @ Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center
Nov 30 @ 3:00 am – 5:00 am

Join activists, foreclosure fighters and elected officials as we talk about the state of the fight for housing justice in Bernal Heights, where neighbors have been organizing neighbors to keep each other in their homes. Discuss how our efforts fit into the rich history of organizing for affordable housing–in the neighborhood and beyond. Hear from supervisors and activists organizing to ensure that anyone fighting foreclosure has the same protections as tenants to stay in their homes; and discuss the next steps in the fight to make sure all San Franciscans have a right to safe, decent, affordable housing. Come to this event and find out how you can get involved in the movement for housing justice.
