What to bring

Everybody is welcome; you do not need to be a hacker to come to the hackathon. Bring ideas, or things you want to learn or teach.
Come by before the OO BBQ at Rainbow Park starts or stop by afterwards.

Mainstream Media Coverage of Occupy vs. Tweets using hashtags #OWS and #Occupy

Comparison of surface area newspapers devoted to Occupy coverage to tweets of #OWS and #Occupy related hashtags over time. Results show that movement-created information distributed via Twitter is a more reliable, grassroots source of information than mainstream media.

The ILWU has a proud history of class struggle and the fight for democratic principles codified in the Ten Guiding Principles of the ILWU. Today ILWU officials flaunt these union principles, using top down control to direct longshore workers to cross picket lines and keep contract negotiations secret while the PMA gives the contract to the maritime employers’ Journal Of Commerce. This contract gives employers a free hand to automate without counter demands of shorter shifts tied to wage increases and follows on the tail of the concessionary grain contracts at EGT and the Northwest Grain agreements. Left unchecked, it will gut ILWU’s coastwide power and bury arguably the last militant union in the United States.

About OccupyOakland.org

This website was created in the fall of 2011. Most of it is now moribund, but the Occupy Oakland Calendar, which lists activist events in the East Bay (and occasionally elsewhere) is still maintained, the Search facility works to find earlier posts and keep OO’s history alive, and articles are occasionally still posted to the front page.

The Occupy Oakland General Assembly met in-person weekly (with a rare skip) since October 10th, 2011 up until the pandemic, at which point we went to bi-weekly Zoom meetings. We do checkins, go over the activist events of the past meeting interval, and have general discussions on politics and revolution.

For many years, until the pandemic, we put on a Feed the People event monthly at Oscar Grant Plaza, where all were welcome to come and partake of a freshly cooked, savory meal, before our GA.
