F*ck Your Budget Assembly @ ONLINE, VIA 'ZOOM'
Jul 11 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

We’re hosting a F*ck Your Budget Assembly to respond to the Oakland City Council’s failure to listen to the demands of thousands of people and 100 community, faith, labor organizations, and small businesses who all agree that we need to Defund the Police and Defend Black Lives.

Guest Speakers:
– James Burch of Anti Police-Terror Project’s #DefundOPD Committee
– Sharena Diamond Thomas of PEOPLE’S COMMUNITY MEDICS (Each One, Teach One)
– Jesse Wiltey of the Melanated Social Work Podcast
– Patricia Moran, Children’s Librarian, Oakland
– Sandra Rodriguez, restorative justice practitioner and trainer

You’re invited to participate in a fishbowl conversation on Zoom about how the city can better spend the $300million that we now spend on the police department.

What does a police free world look like? How can we better spend that money? How much of the city budget should go to housing? To violence prevention? To youth programs? To parks? To libraries?

Agenda:
– Introduction to “Participatory Budgeting” and Guest Speakers
– Fishbowl Conversation with Guest Speakers
– Breakout Rooms: Fill out budget survey (https://cooperative4thecommunity.com/oakland-peoples-budget-survey). A CDP Facilitator will be in each breakout room to answer questions about each city departments and to provide tech support if there are any questions about how to use the survey.

ple’s Park and the Overreach of UC Berkeley @ Online
Jul 27 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

By the People’s Park Historic District Advocacy Group

People’s Park is at the center of fifteen other officially recognized city landmarks, which collectively are a de facto historic district. They represent the heritage of the 1960s and the context of the larger theme of a century of town/gown relationships. Berkeley became a major target of the New Right conservative backlash with Ronald Reagan promising to “clean up the mess in Berkeley.” The preservation of the community-built park is again threatened by UC Berkeley because of the pressures of over-enrollment that has engendered overreach through university expansion into Berkeley and an attendant drain on city resources. UCB proposes to cover People’s Park with concrete housing monoliths, possibly to be erected by a private firm that will profit from student occupants. This would destroy both a historical legacy and much needed open space when reasonable alternatives are available. If Berkeley all but invented the sixties, surely the city and its university should be able to commemorate that decade by preserving People’s Park as the heart and soul of a vital historic district.

If it is raining (as in RAINING, not just misting) at 3:00 PM we meet in the basement of the Omni Collective, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland. During the warmer months we meet at 4 PM at the plaza.

The OO General Assembly has met on a continuous basis for more than five years! Our General Assembly is a participatory gathering of Oakland community members and beyond, where everyone who shows up is treated equally . Our Assembly and the process we have collectively cultivated strives to reach agreement while building community.

At the GA committees, caucuses, and loosely associated groups whose representatives come voluntarily report on past and future actions, with discussion. If you like, just come and hear all the organizing being done! Occupy Oakland encourages political activity that is decentralized and welcomes diverse voices and actions into the movement.

General Assembly Standard Agenda

  1. Welcome & Introductions
  2. Reports from Committees, Caucuses, & Independent Organizations
  3. Announcements
  4. (Optional) Discussion Topic
