Eco-Socialist Network
– 3 part series with David Cobb\, Meleiza Figueroa\, David Bond\,
Chey Bell!
\n
Join us for a
deep dive into Eco-Socialism\, and learn how the capitalist status quo de
prives us of our human rights and aspirations. The first presentation in t
his 3-part series is an introduction to Eco-Socialism vs. Capitalism including a discussion of what Eco-Socialism may mean to you. \n
The world we need and deserve is not only possible\, it is an imperative.<
/b> We and our children will not survive the status quo.
The two following presentations in the series will build on t
he first event and will be held on Feb. 20th and April 10th\, 2021.
Presentations will focus on Eco-Socialist platforms and programs and inst
itutions being built around the country to shift away from capitalist syst
ems and into a just\, sustainable future.
\n
2020 showed us how corpo
rate America tripled their riches while we scrambled to feed our families
and keep a roof over our heads. It’s time to break up big corporations! Th
e Green Party platform and our Green New Deal seek to build an alternative
economic system based on ecology and decentralization of power. We believ
e private ownership of production and state ownership of production are no
t ecologically sound\, socially just\, or democratic and that both contain
built-in structures that advance injustices. We seek democratic decision
making in communities and workplaces in balance with nature. This decentra
lized system is knows as co-ops\, communalism\, or ecological socialism (e
co-socialism).
\n
Please join the Ecosocialist Network for this ki
ck ass kick off with California Greens: Cooperation Humboldt co-founde
r David Cobb\, 2016 press director for Stein/Baraka presidential ca
mpaign & UC Berkeley PhD candidate Meleiza Figueroa\, and David
Bond of Los Angeles who was Kenneth Mejia’s campaign manager. Cobb is
an attorney who was the 2004 Green Party candidate for U.S. President. \nThis is sure to be a riveting panel
\, with kick ass comedy\, to boot\, to kick off the series! \n

Our current topic is degrowth. Our b
ook is Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide\, by Liegey a

uding Amazon. We will be reading the fi
rst half of the book this month\, constituting the first three chapters\,
through page 85 of the paper back edition\, and the second half of the boo
k for our August meeting.
\n
“A sens
e of urgency pervades global environmentalism\, and the degrowth movement
is bursting into the mainstream. As climate catastrophe looms closer\, peo
ple are eager to learn what degrowth is about\, and whether we can save th
e planet by changing how we live. This book is an introduction to the move
ment. As politicians and corporations obsess over growth objectives\, the
degrowth movement demands that we must slow down the economy by transformi
ng our economies\, our politics and our cultures to live within the Earth’
s limits. This book navigates the practice and strategies of the movement\
, looking at its strengths and weaknesses. Covering horizontal democracy\,
local economies and the reduction of work\, it shows us why degrowth is a
compelling and realistic project.”

Register \nThis fire season we’ve seen the largest known wildfire ever in Califor
nia\, bringing the climate crisis literally to our front doors. This is no
t an isolated event. Climate scientists have been warning that extreme wea
ther would be coming if we continued to burn fossil fuels\, and yet\, beca
use of capitalism\, we’ve only seen the use of those fuels skyrocket. In t
he past month reports about this crisis have come out with dire warnings\,
letting us know that tipping points that mean an unavoidable cascade of t
he irreversible climate crisis\, are approaching rapidly if they haven’t h

\n
We are the Climate Emergency Mobil
ization Task Force (CEMTF) a Bay Area coalition of elected officials\, cit
y & county staff\, nongovernmental organizations\, youth\, environmental a
ctivists\, social activists\, and front line communities addressing the in
equities and causes of the climate emergency. We meet Fridays from 9am-noo
n\, from July-November 2021.
\n
Below are our planned meetings. Visit
our website to learn more: https://www.cemtf.org/.
“War is Literally Killing the Planet”. The war economy is br
ought to you by these players: Speaker Nancy Pelosi\, BlackRock Worldwide
Investments\, Lockheed Martin\, and Chevron\, and you and I bought front r
ow seats. We’re funding it.
\n
With our votes and taxes\, we are enab
ling the destruction of life on earth. We need a peace economy to replace
this suicidal situation. We are angry that these players profited handsome
ly from the 20-year war in Afghanistan. We are grieving that they are dest
roying the planet worldwide. We are outraged that they are siphoning over
50% of the U.S. federal budget for continuing wars\, while people all over
the planet are suffering from the climate emergency\, pandemic\, going hu
ngry\, seeing their clean water and air destroyed by wars\, resource extra
ction and fossil fuel emissions\, and fearing the future for their childre
n and all beings.
\n
The war economy supplies huge short-term profits
to these war profiteers and we are calling them out!
\n
Speaker Nanc
y Pelosi’s majority in Congress siphons over 50% of our federal budget to
fund the skyrocketing costs of war and Pentagon operations with their huge
greenhouse gas emissions. Pelosi insists on spending our money on continu
al wars and refuses to support Medicare for All\, a Green New Deal\, affor
dable housing\, education\, elder and child care\, clean water\, air\, and
food — the things that give life and peace a chance.
\n
BlackRock is
making a killing on killing with its investments in the war economy and p
lanet destroying fossil fuel and nuclear industries\, earning a handsome p
rofit for its investors (https://blackrocksbigproblem.com/the-problems/).<
/p>\n
Lockheed buys Congress with it’s generous campaign contributions\,
acting as the U.S. State Dept. and Pentagon’s master\, weaponizing space
and urging a war on China\, and selling weapons to human rights violators
like the Israeli government and the Saudis — who beheaded a journalist\, a
ttacked the World Trade Center\, and bombed a school bus in Yemen killing
40 children with a 500 pound Lockheed bomb. The Saudis are U.S. allies\, t
hanks to Lockheed\, Pelosi\, Chevron and BlackRock.
\n
Chevron sits o
n Lockheed’s Board of Directors and is a major Pentagon contractor\, suppl
ying fossil fuels for the military’s immense greenhouse gas emissions. Che
vron’s short term thirst for profits\, polluting\, pillaging and extractin
g fossil fuels\, aided by militarized police forces and private armies\, i
s adding to the planet’s death spiral. Chevron is a criminal enterprise.
p>\n
We are “connecting the dots” to show that divesting from the war ec
onomy — represented by Pelosi\, the Pentagon\, BlackRock\, Lockheed and Ch
evron– and investing instead in the peace economy we deserve\, is the way
out of this tragic situation.
\n
For International Day of Peace\, COD
EPINK and allies are going to expose the war financiers\, war profiteers\,
and war climate destroyers and call for funding a peace economy instead.<

Join the East Bay DSA Labor Committee this fall for a 5-pa

the context of the radicalizing social movements for civil rights\, studen
t power\, ending the Vietnam war\, and women’s liberation. Open to all and
designed for anyone engaged or interested in workplace or non-workplace b
ased movement work! Sign up here
div>\n
\nWhat were the key lessons of the ‘60s
and ’70s public sector union upsurge that can inform our work today? How d
id workers organize themselves and their communities? To what extent were
the fights against racism and sexism integrated into those struggles? What
role did union officials and the state play? And in all of this\, what we
re the strengths and weaknesses that the Left brought to the movements?\n
This series will explore how the various movements of the period cre
ated the possibility for public workers to think of themselves as workers
needing unions and with the right to bargain with their bosses collectivel
y. We will especially look at how the civil rights movement paved the way
for this to happen and the impact of the disproportionate percentage of bl
ack and women workers in this sector\, left out of the New Deal labor laws
of the 1930s. We will also consider how these unions met or failed to mee
t the challenges of racism\, sexism\, and anti-communism in the midst of C
old War America.
\n
Groups will start the week of Monday\, October 18
th\, consist of 10 – 15 people\, and will meet on a regular date and time
every other week for a total of 5 sessions. Group meeting dates will be as
signed based on the overall availability that participants indicate below.
Organizers of this series will reach out to those that sign-up a few week
s before the start week to inform participants of their group meeting date

group.
\n
Readings will be shared digitally at no cost and will avera

For over ten years APTP has provided support to families s
urviving police terror in their fight for justice\, documenting police abu
ses and connecting impacted families and community members with resources\
, legal referrals\, and opportunities for healing.
\n
Our First Re
sponders team leads this work\, and will be hosting a training Saturday\,
February 26th! This session will focus on training you on copwatching
and investigating incidents of police terror.
\n
We need folks to joi
n our First Responders teams in Oakland and Sacramento to help provide cri
tical support to families impacted by police terror and more. Future train
ings will become available to cover family and jail support.
\n
Wh
ere: Zoom Register to join at bit.ly/aptp-0226\nAccessibility: Auto-generated captions will be available
\n
Register to J
oin \nHere’s an overview of what this training will cover:
\n
\n
\n
Indepe
ndent Investigations: This part focuses on conducting independent peop
le’s investigations including considerations on how to build your team\, s
ecurity and Know Your Rights considerations\, required skills and infrastr
ucture\, preparation\, identifying witnesses\, trauma-informed interviewin
g\, cultural humility\, collecting evidence\, and documenting investigatio
ns. We will use case studies from our investigations in Oakland\, and prov
ide time for knowledge and skill sharing\, and discussion.
\n
Co
pWatching: In the great tradition of our Oakland’s Panthers\, Brown Be
rets\, and other radical grassroots community groups\, we need to Police t
he Police! Learn how to observe and document police harassment in our comm
unities\, advocate for someone under arrest\, and deescalate police interv
ention.
This training wil
l take participants through many of the strategies\, tools and considerati
ons of direct action\, including power and privilege\, de-escalation\, blo
ckades\, legal\, direct action organizing models\, and the opportunity to
form affinity groups. This training will be an important place to get plug
ged into for upcoming actions in 2022.
\n
COVID Protocols:
\n
\n
Please stay home if you have tested + for COVID\, have COVID sympton
s or have been exposed to someone who has tested + for COVID.
\n
We
’ll be in an inside/outside space. Part of the time in a warehouse with hi
gh ceilings with a large rollup door and lots of ventilation. But\, we’re
asking people to still practice social distancing and wear a mask. We’ll p
rovide masks for folks who need one.
\n
If lockdowns\, etc. occur d
ue to the new variant\, we may cancel.
\n
\n
BRING: Comfy shoe
s\, a bottle of water\, layered clothing (it’ll likely start as a warm day
and get cooler closer to the end)\, a snack\, a yard chair (if you have o
ne) and a pen/paper or some other way to take notes.
\n
Co-sponsore
d by Mt. Diablo Rising Tide\, Oil and Gas Action Network\, Extinction Rebe
llion SF Bay\, Green and Red Podcast and Direct Action Everywhere.
\nPublic Service Loan Forgiveness
is a broken promise. On Oct. 6\, 2021\, the Biden administration announce
d a limited waiver intended to finally fulfill the promise of loan cancell
ation for millions of public servants. So far over 100\,000 have gotten th
eir debt cancelled because of the PSLF waiver\, but many others are encoun
tering problems.
\n
The Debt Collective is co-hosting a webinar with
the Student Borrower Protection Center that will focus on how to troublesh
oot those problems.
We will cover some
of the unwritten rules about how to fill out the form that might trip up o
r delay the process\, how to tell if a message you have gotten is false or
misleading\, and what steps to take if you think there is a problem. Our
goal is to make sure that everyone gets the cancellation they were promise
d.
Are police and sheriffs in
your community allowed to tear gas children or protesters? To send the SWA
T team to serve a drug warrant? What militarized equipment does your local
police or sheriff have? When are they allowed to use it and against whom?
\n
A new state law gives Californians a new window of opportunity to
influence what militarized equipment local police agencies use.
\n
J
oin our March 31 Zoom training to find out how. You’ll learn:
\n
\n<
li>What is AB481? How does it apply to
my community?\n
How do I find the relevant policy and hearing date
for my city or county?
\n
What are effective talking points for sp
eaking up?
While Oakland a
nd Berkeley have local ordinances on military equipment used by police\, s
heriff and police departments across the state\, they are now required to
comply with similar state legislation\, AB 481\, and will submit policies
to city councils and county supervisors within the next five weeks.
\n<
p>Please consider joining us and spreading the word.

April meeting we are reading chapters 6 through 9. \nFor our
May meeting will are reading the remainder of the book.

\n
Before there was money\, there was debt. For more than 5
\,000 years\, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires\, humans
have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is\, long be
fore the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era that we also first
encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors—which lives on in f
ull force to this day.
\n
So says anthropologist David Graeber in a s
tunning reversal of conventional wisdom. He shows that arguments about deb
t and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from R
enaissance Italy to Imperial China\, as well as sparking innumerable insur
rections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancien
t works of law and religion (words like “guilt\,” “sin\,” and “redemption”
) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt\, and shape even ou
r most basic ideas of right and wrong.

essions are on Mondays: Oct 9th\, 16th\, 23rd & 30th. Online Zoom informat
ion will be sent through email upon registration. \n
