Oakland and eight other school districts are asking the U.S. Department of Education for a waiver of tough school standards in order to pursue alternative performance measures that could return millions of dollars in federal funds back to local control. A Texas police officer who fired 41 shots at a chase suspect in August has been fired. The Garland Police Department confirmed that it fired Officer Patrick Tuter after an internal investigation into the Aug. 12, 2012, shooting. Michael Allen, 25, was shot and killed after a high-speed chase that began in Garland and ended in Mesquite, Texas. Allen was wanted on suspicion of eluding police in Sasche a few days earlier. Oakland: Two people killed in shooting early Saturday morning

OAKLAND — A man and a woman were pronounced dead after a double shooting in East Oakland, police said. Residents called police to report gunfire just after 4 a.m. near Apricot and Blenheim streets, just off San Leandro Street, police said. No one else was injured. Both victims, who were not identified, were found in the street and pronounced dead at the scene. Police were still trying to identify both people and determine what their relationship was. Two activists who have been supporting Occupy Oakland have just come back from a trip to Ostrava, Czech Republic. They visited Přednádraží, a street where mostly Roma residents have been resisting forced evictions. They also met with local activists and organized a screening of Occupy the Bay documentary.
