Support striking refinery workers

USW workers are on strike at nine refineries, including Tesoro near Martinez.  Their contract has expired.  Issues include safe staffing levels and stop work authorization to respond to dangerous conditions.  You can support them by joining the picket line at Tesoro, 150 Solano, Pacheco (near Highways 680 and 4).  It’s a great chance for community members to stand with workers fighting for our health and safety!  The picket line is up 24/7, so you are welcome at any time! The Tesoro plant has been shut down cooperatively by management and workers … Continued

Hella Privacy.

oopwg

#HellaPrivacy. That’s the new hashtag and slogan of the Oakland Privacy Working Group as it attempts to get the City Council to pass a strong privacy policy for the Domain Awareness Center. A year ago the spy center known as the DAC was, after hella protests and public outrage spearheaded by OPWG and the Muslim community, confined to keeping tabs on things only at Port of Oakland, and was not allowed to come on line until a privacy policy was developed. (See the DAC FAQ for a detailed history). An … Continued

A Reply to the Open Letter of Dec. 23 from Bay Area Police Officers’ Associations  From the Occupy Oakland Demilitarize the Police Working Group The ”Open Letter to the Residents of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland” calls for a “constructive dialogue” to “keep our streets safe”, but the members of the Occupy Oakland Demilitarize the Police Working Group see denial and self-righteousness in the letter that would poison such a dialogue.  Before any respectful exchange of views on what is to be done to alleviate the outrage caused by … Continued

If This is Tuesday, It Must Mean Another Settlement Against OPD.

no-stay-aways

No, it’s not $4.5 million.  It’s not even the $600K settlement that Kayvan Sabeghi reached.  But $25K and attorney’s fees for being shoved to the ground by crazed OPD officers on January 28th, 2012 is just one more indictment of  Jean Quan, Deanna Santanna and the entire out of control policing system in Oakland. As the San Francisco Chronicle reports The Oakland City Council earlier this year agreed to pay $25,000 to Joanne Warwick, who now lives in Detroit. The council is expected to give final approval Tuesday night to … Continued

Urban Shield 2014 Arrives.

stop-police-terror-1

From September 4th, 2014, until September 7th, 2014, Urban Shield reappears in Oakland, CA. It’s four days of glorifying militarized police and their deadly toys. It’s a convention which markets death via its trade show and whose 2013 publicity has a picture of commandos on a BART train pointing assault weapons while a passenger rides nonplussed. It’s 2014 publicity pictures are equally horrifying. Four days of weapons on display, sessions on how to deal with terrorists (but none on how to de-escalate a crowd situation or talk someone down who … Continued

Kayvan Sabeghi’s Lawsuit Against the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department Ready to Proceed.

kayvan-sabegi

Kayvan Sabeghi, beaten to the point of internal injuries by OPD late into the evening of November 2nd, 2011, settled his claims against the City of Oakland for $645,000 some time ago. But that wasn’t all that happened to Sabeghi.  After being handed over to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, he was “ignored by Sheriff’s deputies… even as he lay on the floor vomiting, unable to move and begging for help…” He nearly died as a result.  A short time ago a judge cleared his case to go to trial, ruling … Continued
