“You Gotta Be For the People.”

jodie-defense-day3

Gigi Winters, an Occupy Oakland activist who lost her home in Oakland to the banks after being evicted at gunpoint almost a year ago, speaks to the Albany City Council several days ago about the absurdity of evicting people from the Albany Bulb when there is no place for them to go. Gigi was active in the successful fight to save Jodie Randolph’s home from the maws of the Big Banks, as seen in this photo of her standing with Jodie and others on Jodie’s porch in Alameda in November … Continued

First Friday vs the QuanDAC

Download the printable flyer

First Friday evening (1/3/14) Oakland Privacy Group (OPG) peeps were out in force doing mock surveillence, distributing anti-Domain Awareness Center (DAC) literature, talking to people about privacy and the DAC, and even making trouble for  Jean Quan as she stood by her “Quan For Mayor” booth just a couple of hundred feet away. A good time was had by all, except, perhaps, the Mayor. Approval for a contractor to take over Phase II of the DAC contract from SAIC – summarily dismissed months ago for violations of Oakland’s Nuclear Free Zone … Continued

Still on the Bulb.

albany-bulb-farmer

More than three months have passed since the City of Albany “began operations” to evict some sixty or seventy otherwise homeless people living on the Albany Bulb. Since then two lawsuits have been filed to stop them, Albany has erected a scorned temporary shelter that cost $300,000 and which has seen almost no use and which none of the Bulb residents chose to move into, one person’s residence was dismantled, four people have been provided with more permanent housing, and most of the Bulb’s denizens are still out there on … Continued

Free Kali!

free-kali

Sunday, December 15th, marked two years since Kali was arrested for occupying Oscar Grant Plaza during the vigil, arrested for possessing a blanket. WHY WAS HE ARRESTED? As absurd as it sounds even now, he was initially taken into custody for sitting on a public bench with a blanket. But we know the real reason they brutalized him and locked him away for 3 more years (nearly giving him a life-sentence!) was for being a bold, beautiful, black man they want so badly to break. He was one of many arrested … Continued

Now We Know What Getting Beaten Nearly to Death is Worth: $645,000.

kayvan-sabegi2

We predict that Jean Quan will not be decrying the “economic violence” to Oakland any time soon, but yesterday the City of Oakland and Kayvan Sabeghi agreed to settle Sabeghi’s civil rights lawsuit for $645,000. Sabeghi nearly died after being beaten by OPD Officer Frank Uu – who has since retired from the force as is likely enjoying a fat pension at taxpayers’ expense.(The $645,000 will be taken from Oakland tax revenue; Uu has not been sued or prosecuted.) Kayvan Sabeghi, a veteran, had participated in the peaceful Port of … Continued

The Face of Quan. The Arms of Santana. The Body of OPD. Or, DAC Spelled Correctly is NSA.

dac-eye

Some ten members of the Oakland Privacy Group braved the cold and rain on Friday evening to bring Oakland the story of DAC: The Domain Awareness Center. One of the best non-artist First Friday booths evahhhh held the DAC exhibit – complete with both mock and real surveillance cameras, a beautiful banner, and a movie screen showing Minority Report style scenes from ’1984′, the surveillance camera livestream, and a privacy poster slide show. Too bad the rest of Oakland had the sense to stay home and away from the shivering … Continued

Albany Bulb Residents Denounce Internment Trailers.

bulb-trailers-outside-shot

Welcome to the Albany Internment Camp. Two trailers with fences “protecting” outside bathroom and shower facilities were recently set up on the approach to the Bulb by the City of Albany. They “house” up to thirty of the seventy or so residents of the Albany Bulb the good burghers of Albany have decided to evict. Share the Bulb released this statement Nov. 29th, condemning eviction plans and the mentality of those who would confine people to conditions in some senses worse than those for in solitary confinement at Pelican Bay. … Continued

Port Truckers Get Nothing from City. Work Stoppage and Pickets on Wednesday!

port-truckers-button

They got nothing from Oakland’s Mayor… The truckers have gone to the City of Oakland and asked for assistance from the Mayor and City Council to help sway the Port Commissioners, but from the Mayor all they got was lip service followed by increased antagonism in the form of legal action against them for threatening the flow of commerce at the Port. All they wanted was a fair shake for them and their families… For the past ten years trucker rates have remained the same while the costs of working … Continued
