Hey, Good Couple Weeks Occupy Oakland

I think I spend too much time on here or facebook kind of self-critiquing and debating and all that, I don’t know about all of you….  how about we just kind of give ourselves a hand for a good couple weeks?  5 banks shut down (that I know of) and a private country club golf course.  We had a Funeral for Capitalism, the FTP march for Oscar Grant to the Fruitvale, a caravan or two went up to help Occupy Sacramento counter-protest white supremacists, and we helped gather hundreds of … Continued

Make Love Not War

Excellent night, Mel and I had a lot of fun…. let’s do it again?  I heard some people talking about doing this every First Friday.  Sounds good.  We do not need GA approval for this.  I think it should be an autonomous action like FTP.  I was really encouraged to see so many folks from TAC and the FTP march, and so many people in “black bloc” outfits.  I’m so tired — isn’t everybody? — of hearing “non-violent” as a word to divide us.  We can all be non-violent, when … Continued

What happened at the plaza last night?

OK, first of all I just want to say I had a great time the last night, and the night before.  I’m concerned about our GA.  The GA was cancelled on Sunday…. why?  The GA was cancelled last night…. why?  On Sunday, the best I could gather from disappointed #OOers was that there were only 65 people present at 2:00 p.m.  But often in the past when we are below quorum we begin the GA with forums or announcements, and by the time we get to voting we have reached quorum.  And then … Continued

Thoughts on counter-protesting the NRL

I spoke about this during general announcements last night, but afterwards I got to talking with my wife and she reminded me about some things, we had a good conversation about it so I thought I may have more constructive things to say at this point also. OK, I’m talking about the Pro-Life rally on Saturday that people are talking about counter-protesting.  Now I should have said, I don’t have a problem with counter-protesting.  That is not what I mean when I say “think about whether the best use of … Continued

A funny thing happened on the way from the forum….

True story:  the other night I was heading home from the G.A. downtown with my wife, and we saw one of those security guards that they hired to patrol the plaza taking a leak on the side of DeLauer’s.  I said I wished I had a camera, and I said it pretty loud.  I mean, when we had this big camp in downtown Oakland they always said in the media that we had to go because we were pissing and shitting everywhere.  So I just had to laugh, and feel … Continued

I love you guys and gals! 1/8/12

Just got back home, was hanging with the awesome people at Occupy Oakland till about 3:00 a.m. when my wife and I finally caught a cab home.  Thanks for all the great conversation tonight, and marching for our freedom of speech against some pretty ridiculous police tactics.  Till next we all meet. 15150

War Is a Racket!

This book/lecture was one of the things that inspired me in my life so I wanted to share it and see who wants to discuss.  USMC Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated Veterans in the history of the U.S. military to turn against war after his retirement; he was responsible for helping to rally political support for the Bonus Expeditionary Force (i.e. Bonus Army) and their occupation of the District of Columbia in the summer of 1932, and helped to expose a fascist plot by JP … Continued

Was Nixon more “liberal” than Obama?

I’ve been doing some reading about the repeal of the 1950 Emergency Detention Act…. this is part of what Nixon said when he signed the bill to repeal that act: “the mere continued existence of these legal provisions has aroused concern among many Americans that the act might someday be used to apprehend and detain citizens who hold unpopular views. Some have feared that it might someday be used to permit a situation comparable to the detention of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II. I have supported and … Continued

More talk of racial/gender quotas on the stack

I don’t want to make this seem like a really big issue, because it isn’t.  But I thought that we already have considered proposals to use a racial or gender preference to bring diversity to the stack at the GA, and that proposal did not eve come close to passing consensus.  So why were the facilitators at the GA last night (12/21) talking about how they would balance the stack to put POC or women ahead of others?  I’m sorry, I don’t want to come off as naive.  I’m not … Continued
