DESCRIPTION:Bay Area transit services are passing up thousands of riders ea

Attend an act
ion at the Air District (BAAQMD) Headquarters\, stand with community youth
and organizations\, and tell the Board members we need them to vote the r
ight way —on June 2nd\, the next day—to protect community health from the
ravages of particulate matter pollution. We cannot afford to lose this in
tergenerational fight for environmental justice. Our lungs just cannot af
ford it.
\n
You can RSVP for the June 1st action on Facebook (or here if you don’t have Facebook).
\n
And don’t forget to sign the petition!
\n
The Air District must pr
otect community health and truly bring “a healthy breathing environment fo
r every Bay Area resident\,” in the words of its mission statement.
\n<
p>
The next day on June 2nd\, the Bay Area Air District will be vot
ing on whether to take strong regulatory action against Chevron and PBF re
fineries and force the facilities to make dramatic pollution cuts
. After seeing the stark health impact data and hearing from community me
mbers like you\, the Advisory Council of the Air District
recommended that BAAQMD take “maximum feasible act
ion within its authority to reduce emissions from [particulate matter] sou
rces\, prioritizing the most impacted areas.” However\, Big Oil and i
ts allies are lobbying aggressively against the cat cracker Rule 6-5\, dis
torting facts and making false claims.\n

AND a truly public (i.e. zero-tuition) higher education system\, governed
according to democratic process where regular people in the system have me

AND the UC cease efforts to demolish and displace the 1921 Walnut st tenan
ts and building on People’s Park as outlined in UC Berkeley’s 2021 Long Ra
nge Development plan. More generally\, the University of California should
cease ALL real estate acquisitions and real estate speculation\, particul
arly such acquisitions that will displace people and other threatened spec
ies\, and instead create housing options that are accessible to students a
nd working class people\, which necessarily means priced below the current
market rate in most UC campus towns.\n3. We DEMAND the demilitarization o
f and divestment from campus police\, with reinvestment into services that
actually benefit students. We call for the end to UCPD involvement in lab
or disputes and in harassing and displacing homeless people in the areas o
n and around UC campuses\, such as People’s Park in Berkeley.\n4. We DEMAN
D an end to the pattern of privatization\, devaluation\, and contracting o
ut of UC labor across all 10 UC campuses.\n5. We DEMAND an end to the UC’s
ties to colonial and imperial projects. This means ceasing support of\, a

Mauna Kea in Hawaii. It also means actively supporting Indigenous-led eff

an affordable\, public university whose future is democratically determine
d by students\, faculty and the surrounding communities and not the endles
s search for profit. However\, we know that these aspirations are a far cr
y from the current reality. If there is to be any progress toward achievin
g them\, we put forward the following demands:
\n
1. We DEMAND a trul
y public (i.e. zero-tuition) higher education system\, governed according
to democratic process where regular people in the system have meaningful p
ower and opportunity to impact major decision making.
\n
2. We DEMAND
the UC cease efforts to demolish and displace the 1921 Walnut st tenants
and building on People’s Park as outlined in UC Berkeley’s 2021 Long Range
Development plan. More generally\, the University of California should ce
ase ALL real estate acquisitions and real estate speculation\, particularl
y such acquisitions that will displace people and other threatened species
\, and instead create housing options that are accessible to students and
working class people\, which necessarily means priced below the current ma
rket rate in most UC campus towns.
\n
3. We DEMAND the demilitarizati
on of and divestment from campus police\, with reinvestment into services
that actually benefit students. We call for the end to UCPD involvement in
labor disputes and in harassing and displacing homeless people in the are
as on and around UC campuses\, such as People’s Park in Berkeley.
\n
4. We DEMAND an end to the pattern of privatization\, devaluation\, and co
ntracting out of UC labor across all 10 UC campuses.
\n
5. We DEMAND
an end to the UC’s ties to colonial and imperial projects. This means ceas
ing support of\, and direct investment in\, the Thirty Meter Telescope pro
ject on the sacred Mauna Kea in Hawaii. It also means actively supporting
Indigenous-led efforts to rematriate stolen land\, remains\, and property
held by the Regents and Anthropology Departments across the state.
\n
JOIN US FOR A RALLY IN PROTEST OF THE UC REGENTS MEETINGS OCCURRING AT TH
E SAME TIME. THE UC DECISION MAKING PROCESS IS UNDEMOCRATIC AND THE REGENT
S ARE HIDING FROM THE PEOPLE USING COVID RESTRICTIONS
