How do I become a member of CDP? How do I get on th

personalized text messages about upcoming events? When is CDP launching? W
hat are they launching? What is participatory budgeting? Why do they want
the residents of Oakland to decide the entire city budget? Who’s funding t
his project? Who’s leading it? Why should I join CDP? Do I get a prize or
like…earn a badge for joining?
\nIf you know the answers to ANY of t

wer them when NEWBIES join! If you’re a supporter of CDP and want to know
more\, then join us for this informal Q&A session! If you follow us on soc

first step to joining this revolution!
\nOnce all of the questions a

Paul Paz y Miño will address Chevron’s internati

years under house arrest for representing a group of Indigenous peoples a
nd rural farmers in Ecuador in a lawsuit against Texaco\, which was accuse
d of dumping some 16 billion gallons of toxic waste in what would become k
nown as the “Amazon Chernobyl.” That lawsuit began in 1993\, ricocheted between US and Ecuadorian cour
ts\, and continued after Texaco was acquired by its now-parent company of
Chevron. The plaintiffs represented by Donziger won the case\, forcing Che

Andrés Soto will brin

’s Refinery Modernization Project\, its catastrophic refinery explosion an
d fire in 2012\, and February’s oil spill in San Francisco Bay.
\n
Jed Holtzman will discuss current efforts to reduce harmful
particulate matter emissions emitted by the refinery (and the PBF refiner
y in Martinez) and explain how you can support that crucial effort at the

\n
Join Oakland Privacy to organize against the surveillance state\, police m
ilitarization and ICE\, and to advocate for surveillance regulation around
the Bay and nationwide.
\n
\n
We fight against spy drones\,
facial recognition\, tracking equipment\, police body camera secrecy\, an
ti-transparency laws and requirements for “backdoors” to cellphones\; we o
ppose “pre-crime” and “thought-crime\,” — to list just a few invasions of
our privacy by all levels of Government\, and attempts to hide what gover
nment officials\, employees and agencies are doing.
\n
We dr
aft and push for privacy legislation for City Councils\, at the County lev
el\, and in Sacramento. We advocate in op-eds and in the streets. We stand
in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and believe no one is illegal.
\n
Check out some of what we worked on in 2022\, 2021\, 2020 and
2019.
\n
Oakland Privacy originally came together in 2013 to fig
ht against the Domain Awareness Center\, Oakland’s citywide networked mass
surveillance hub. OP was instrumental in stopping the DAC from becoming a
city-wide spying network. We helped fight and helped win the fight again
st Urban Shield.
\n
Our major projects currently include local legisl
ation to regulate state surveillance (we got the strongest surveillance re
gulation ordinance in the country passed in Oakland!)\, supporting and opp
osing state legislation as appropriate\, battling mass surveillance in the
form of facial recognition and other analytics\, mass aerial surveillance
\, ubiquitous license plate readers\, and pushing back against ICE.
\n<
p>On September 12th\, 2019 we were presented with a Barlow Award by the El
ectronic Frontier Foundation for our work\, and on March 16th\, 2021 s Jam
es Madison Freedom of Information Award by the Northern California Society
of Professional Journalists.\n
