All out to defend the Berkeley Post Office, EVICTION IMMINENT!

Categories: Front Page

URGENT UPDATE: About 5 PM a dozen uniformed postal police showed up and delivered some papers and ordered all tents down and all persons away from the Berkeley Post Office by the end of business today, Monday, August 5th.  The PO closes at 6 PM and the doors are locked at 8 PM, we need folks down there now to defend the occupation.  Me, I have vacation plans in the Bahamas and have already booked my flight….

FRIDAY: A little before 2 pm today (Friday 8/2) a group of plainclothes Postal Inspectors from San Francisco office accompanied by uniformed Postal Police approached members of the Berkeley Post Office Defense. The officers filmed the conversation. The officers stated health and safety rules trump First Amendment rights. When asked to be specific the officers left and returned with a copy of Postal Inspection Service Rules and Regulations Governing Conduct on Postal Service Property. The officers then left without making any specific requests. The encampment appears to be in compliance with Postal Service rules. Link to rules: http://about.usps.com/posters/pos7.pdf
KTVU account: According to Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch a group of postal inspectors and postal police visited the protesters Friday and warned them that they needed to remove their tents from the steps of the historic post office at 2000 Allston Way.
